Leader and leadership are age old concepts. Civilizations have continuously evolved since time immemorial due to the influence of innumerable leaders. However, questions like whom to call a leader or what attributes actually lead to successful leadership never had straight answers. A leader is the one who has a potential to lead, however, the purpose of leadership is always to influence individuals or groups for achieving common goals. Academic leadership is one of such dimension of the leader, which has its influence in the academic settings. Need for developing leadership in academics have gathered further significance in 144

the contemporary world, as the growing tensions and contradictions of twenty first century education have forced youth to constantly look for valuable advice and leadership.

As a teacher education department, we are constantly involved in the training and re-training of our students through internship programs conducted within the schools in our vicinity. As such, the role of Principals or faculty of the schools becomes very important in shaping the skills of the interns. Our purpose as a teacher educator is to inculcate Academic leadership in our student; providing principals and senior faculty of our practicing schools the avenues of professional development on academic leadership has always been my priority, as the coordinator of the School of Education, under the scheme of Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya National Mission on Teachers and Training (PMMMNMTT).

I am glad that the department in the Tehri Campus has taken up the challenge in this regard. I congratulate Prof. Sunita Godiyal and her team and wish every success for endeavor.

She said that it is very difficult for a teacher to keep students attentive in the classroom in this age of Google. According to her a teacher is one who teaches, who inspires, who creates and maintains an essence of belongingness and talks directly to the students. It is important for a teacher to listen to their students than to just hear them. Reading and writing are parts of communication but this should not be limited only to teachers, colleagues and students. Parents and community should also be a part of communication especially for principals of institutions. Next she talked about types of communication namely – verbal and non-verbal. According to her a teacher is someone who transfers values, life skills and helps a student to evolve as a responsible human being.

158

To illustrate her premise, she got the participants to play a game/exercise. A B.Ed student volunteered and helped in the game which made everyone understand the importance of gestures and body language in communication.
