Mark Znutas is in that line of good offensive defenseman that we have had in the past that can really skate. Offensively, Joe Brock, Everett Sheen and Jamie Jelinek all had a lot of success scor- ing last year for their teams. We think they can do that at this level. J.P. Martignetti who is 6-3, 214, is a real strong player, while goalie Adam Roy was considered one of the best goalies in the North last year.” The strength of the team will be its depth in all three positions. “Any- time you are going to have decisions with lineups that means you have pretty good depth,” said Pearl. “Depth is nice but it can’t all be just aver- age depth. We need depth in that all guys are good players, which is what I think we have. Six guys scoring 12 goals work just as well as three guys scoring 24 goals. We want to have a team that does not just have one or two good lines but four strong lines. If we have that type of team I think we will be really good.” The Crusaders are also expected to be a strong defensive team. “We have to get back to two goals a game against,” said Pearl. “That has been our hallmark for 12 years so we will have to get back to that. The nice thing about two seasons ago is that not only did we have a great defense we also led the league in offense. So we want to be strong both ways.” Holy Cross will face a tough non-conference schedule once again this season with home games against Niagara (10/13), Merrimack (12/1) and Quinnipiac (1/19), while it will face Providence (10/20) on the road. The Crusaders will also participate in ’s TD Banknorth Tourna- ment (12/29-30). Holy Cross will play the Catamounts in the fi rst round and either Quinnipiac or Western Michigan the next day. Atlantic Hockey is once again expected to have a lot of depth. “The balance of our league is tremendous,” said Pearl. “I think there are numer- ous teams that can win the championship and represent our league in the

After the two lowest remaining seeds play each other on March 14, the winner will advance to the semifi nals on March 15. The champi- onship game will be on March 16 with the winner earning a spot in the NCAA Tournament. THE FORWARDS Returning 11; Lost 5; Newcomers 4 The Crusaders return 11 forwards from a year ago and welcome fi ve newcomers. Despite the graduation of Holy Cross’ all-time Division I points leader James Sixsmith, the Crusaders have a good mix of experi- enced forwards and talented underclassmen. Reinhardt enters the season with 38 career goals and 92 career points, as his 38 goals are tied for eighth on the Holy Cross Division I career list and his 92 points are ranked ninth. The center will be a major factor in setting up and scoring goals. “Dale is a great set up guy, but he also has a good knack for scoring goals,” said Pearl. Werry will also need to have a strong year for the Crusaders as he is coming off his most productive season as a Crusader. “I look for Matt to have a pretty big year for us offensively,” said Pearl. “He is also a great penalty killer and a strong guy on the boards.” The three sophomores, Driscoll, Forshner and Sheahan, all had strong freshman seasons and are expected to be major contributors this year. Last season, Driscoll ranked fi fth on the team in points with six goals and 11 assists for 17 points, while Sheahan was eighth with fi ve goals and eight assists for 13 points and Forshner was tied for ninth with three goals and eight assists for 11 points. “Driscoll is really powerful and he can take the puck away, but he can also make some real good skill plays with the puck,” said Pearl. “Forshner is very skilled. He is very fast and creative. Sheahan is a scorer. He fi nished really strong as he scored at least one point in fi ve of our last eight games.” Thomson had a career season as a sophomore as he recorded seven O’Grady, Franklin, Gabriel, Marty Dams, Celin and Znutas are all goals and nine assists for 16 points, as his seven goals tied for fourth expected to help the team defensively and add offense when necessary. on the team. “Dewey is a really good shooter, skater, puck handler and Pearl is really excited about his group of defensemen. “All of our defen- passer,” said Pearl. “He is a playmaker and he also fi nished really strong semen will help us keep the puck out of the net and also contribute on last season.” offense,” said Pearl. What is your coaching philosophy? “I like the line, ‘Recruit offense and teach defense.’ We like to get a higher skilled type of player here, someone who can skate and handle the puck. We feel like we can take care of the defensive part. The size part we can take care of in the weight room with coach (Jeff) Oliver. We are going to go after each game and hopefully win each one. Our phi- losophy is the same as it was 13 years ago. We want to get better each day; be it at practice, a fi lm session or a game.”

What type of players do you recruit? “We like to bring in intelligent players, both academically and on the ice. It is important that he has good hockey sense, skates well and is a good teammate.”

Why should a student-athlete attend Holy Cross? “Holy Cross is a perfect blend of academics and athletics. To be here on a beautiful campus, dealing with some of the best professors in the country and to be playing for a good Division I ice hockey program. The Holy Cross experience for a student-athlete is up there with any in the country.”

How important is scheduling? “Playing out of league games against some of the top teams in the coun- try spices up the regular season. I do like in-season tournaments. Those are exciting to play in and make regular-season games a little bit more meaningful.”

What are the strengths of the staff? “Our staff is very versatile, I played defense, and Brian (Akashian) and Jason (Smith) played forward. We hit all the areas on a team. We have three guys who understand Holy Cross and the balance you have to endure as a student-athlete. All three of us are passionate, not just about winning hockey games, but winning hockey games at Holy Cross. We know the traditions we have established here for our student-athletes and want to continue them for many years to come.” The Pearl Family: Katie, Paul, Karen and Bobby. Two NCAA Tournament Appearances In Four Years (2004 & 2006) 43 The Hart Center — Home Of The Crusaders

The Holy Cross hock ey team moved into its own home in the fall of 1975. From its open ing on De c. 2, 1975 to its around-the-clock op er a tion to day, the Hart Rec re ation Cen ter has been a model of ex cel lence for oth er rinks to em u late. The Hart Center was erect ed in hon or of the late Rev. Francis J. Hart, S.J., who was the guid ing force behind the in tra mu ral ath let ic com pe ti tion at Holy Cross for sev er al decades. In the summer of 2006, the Hart Center was renovated as a brand new ice surface, boards and higher glass were put in, along with new score- boards. The Crusaders’ lock er room fa cil i ty was renovated in 2007 with all new lockers. The locker room features a players’ lounge and state- of-the-art vid eo equip ment. The team’s weight room is lo cat ed adjacent to the hock ey rink. Over the years, the Hart Center has set the stage for battles against the likes of Boston College, the Uni ver si ty of Maine, Merrimack Col lege, the University of Massachusetts and the University of Notre Dame, while in 2006 the Hart Center hosted the Atlantic Hockey semifi nals and fi nals as the Crusaders won the title. The Hart Center also hosted the MAAC Hockey Champi - on ship in 1999 and 2002.

Carol & Park B. Smith Wellness Center

Opened in 1997, the Carol and Park B. Smith Wellness Center is a two-story facility which was built as an addition to the Hart Recreation Center. The wellness center provides state-of-the-art fi tness equipment for varsity athletes and all other members of the Holy Cross community. A $1.5-million gift from Carol and Park B. Smith (Class of 1954) kicked off the campaign to fund the facility. “Everyone today agrees that fi tness is very important,” Smith said in 1997. “I’m confi dent that this new Wellness Center — whose facilities will be second-to-none — will provide a real benefi t to current and future Holy Cross students, teachers and staff.” With 15,000 square feet, the wellness center provides over four times more space than the college previously had for varsity and community exercise and training, and centralizes athletic equipment and facilities once found in fi ve locations in three campus buildings. The center houses, on the fi rst level, a highly versatile strength and conditioning center for Holy Cross’ varsity student-athletes. There are areas for speed development programs, as well as for strength and endur- ance conditioning. The space, which is able to accommodate as many as 60 people at a time, enables Holy Cross’ larger sports teams to work out together, thereby enhancing team unity.

said. “And while football may have been the fi rst to grasp the concept, we now train athletes from every varsity sport. The wellness center has been a huge boon to our program.” With 6,500 square feet of the center devoted solely to varsity athletes, Oliver and his staff to are able to accommodate a much larger number of athletes at one time, allowing teams to train together at times more conve- nient to their busy schedules as student-athletes. The state-of-the-art equipment in the wellness center includes eight multi-purpose power racks, each with over 600 pounds of free weights; seven Olympic lifting platforms with over 375 pounds of rubberized free weights; more than 3,000 pounds of dumbbells; eighteen pieces of aerobic equipment; three full sets of plyometric boxes; and a number of free weight- loaded pieces of equipment to accommodate injured athletes. “Thanks to the generous donation from the Smiths,” Oliver said, “This facility is state of the art.”

The second fl oor has been designed for use by all students, faculty and staff. It has two sections: one for aerobic training, and the other for cardiovascular, variable-resistance and strength training. A diverse selection of equipment accommodates users ranging from beginners to advanced athletes. Its south-facing wall is mostly glass, allowing most users a view of the practice fi elds and the rolling hills of central New England. The center also offers programs that explore the connections between fi tness and wellness, to help students learn how good health can complement and enhance other aspects of their educational experience. An advisory board comprising physicians, fi tness and strength trainers, faculty members, psychologists, nutritionists, a college chaplain and others are responsible for creating and coordinating programming for the center. Holy Cross head strength and conditioning coach Jeff Oliver believes that the wellness center is of the utmost importance to Crusader athletic teams. “Over the past two decades, college coaches have turned increasingly to strength and conditioning to gain an edge over their opponents,” Oliver Two NCAA Tournament Appearances In Four Years (2004 & 2006) 45 Community Service

Every year the Holy Cross hockey program supports the surrounding community in multiple ways. Throughout the season the Crusaders will visit local schools, conduct clinics and participate in the Walk for Cancer. Each Fall the team takes part in the annual DEAFinitley Hockey program, a Learn-to-Skate program at the Hart Center for deaf children from the local community. During the season, the team visits the Grafton Street Elementary School, where they discuss the benefi ts of having an education with the fi fth and sixth graders, and they take part in career days. The team is also a part of the Crusaders for Kids program. The program was initiated in January of 2006 and involves players bringing inner city kids to Holy Cross sporting events. For the Holy Cross hockey team raising money for cancer research has taken on a new meaning after losing two teammates, Glenn “Spike” Crane (1981-2002) and John Daniel Bombard (1979-2003), to cancer. The past four years, the Crusaders teamed up with other members of the Holy Cross community and took part in the Walk to Cure Cancer, a fi ve-mile walk around Lake Quinsigamond. Holy Cross raises an estimated amount of more than $9,000 for cancer research at the UMass Memorial Cancer Center.

Holy Cross Ranks Among the Best Undergraduate Liberal Arts Colleges in the Nation Holy Cross is renowned for its academic excellence and mentor- ing-based, liberal arts education in the Jesuit tradition. An exclusively undergraduate institution with just under 2,800 students, Holy Cross is the oldest Catholic college in New England. Founded in 1843 in Worcester, Mass., the campus occupies 174 beautifully landscaped acres, featuring traditional and contemporary architecture, state-of-the-art facilities, and striking views from atop Mount St. James. Academic life at Holy Cross is serious, challenging and exciting. Stu- dent-professor exchanges in the classroom, as well as in countless informal set- tings, are at the center of academic life at Holy Cross. With a student to faculty ratio of 11 to one, the opportunity for individual attention is readily available. Few classes exceed an enrollment of 40, and most average 19 students. Holy Cross professors are widely respected in their academic spe- cialties. Many have national reputations for their research and publica- tions, creative performances, recordings and exhibitions. Almost all of the nearly 300 full- and part-time faculty members hold doctoral degrees from some of the fi nest universities here and abroad. Among the major academic facilities on campus are Dinand Library (which, along with three other specialized libraries on campus, has total holdings of more than 650,000 volumes); Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Art Gallery (with a regular schedule of world-class exhibitions); Brooks Con- cert Hall (acclaimed by performers and acoustical experts as one of the fi nest medium-sized performance spaces in the region); St. Joseph Memo- rial Chapel (built in 1924 and containing the recently renovated McCooey Chapel on the lower level); Hogan Campus Center (with bookstore, post offi ce, coffee lounge, cafeteria and pub); Carol and Park B. Smith Hall (housing the Center for Religion, Ethics and Culture and the Rehm Li- brary); the Multimedia Resource Center in Edith Stein Hall; and the sci- ence complex in Haberlin, O’Neil and Swords Halls.

Unique Programs at Holy Cross MONTSERRAT Beginning with the class enrolling at Holy Cross in September of 2008, all fi rst-year students will be part of a challenging new academic and co- curricular program called Montserrat. Embracing the excitement and dis- covery of living and learning at Holy Cross, this new program—expressly designed for fi rst-year students—will integrate academic, co-curricular and residential experiences in unique ways. One of the cornerstones of a Holy Cross education is the commitment to Jesuit values. So it is fi tting that the program is named after the mountain in Spain where, in 1522, St. Ignatius of Loyola (the founder of the Jesuit order) decided to begin a new life. Students entering Holy Cross will also begin a new chapter of their lives—and Montserrat will provide experiences in and out of the classroom to enhance their journey, while supplying the tools to climb to new places.
