Our Heritage

The Melville Water Polo Club (MWPC) is a foundation club of the Western Australian Water Polo Association, one of six clubs to compete in the inaugural Western Australian Water Polo competition in 1946. In the early years, MWPC games were held in the river, in the original "Bicton Baths" where our clubhouse now stands. Water Polo is the longest running Olympic team sport which is played globally, we are so proud to be able to open doors between cultures and countries right here in Perth.

Over time, MWPC has won more senior and junior grade premierships than any other club in the history of the Western Australian Water Polo Association.

This strong competitive performance has translated into success in the country’s premier water polo competition, the National Water Polo League (NWPL). MWPC has fielded teams since the third year of its inception. The Fremantle Mariners (men) and Fremantle Marlins (women) are two of the most successful teams in the history of the NWPL with both teams claiming multiple NWPL championships and producing Olympic representatives.

2017 National Water Polo League

MWPC competes in the NWPL, entering men’s and women’s teams. These teams compete against 11 teams from New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland and South Australia for the 2017 National League Championship, running over 22 games from January 2017 to April 2017.

Both MWPC teams are amongst the most successful in the NWPL. Our men have won 7 titles in the 25 years we have competed, and the women have won 5 titles in the 12 years that the women's league has been contested.

At the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, 3 of our Fremantle Marlins, Gemma Beadsworth, Glencora McGhie and Zoe Arancini represented Australia. This was Gemma’s third Olympic Games and Glencora’s second; both won bronze medals at the 2012 London Olympic Games. The Fremantle Mariners had 2 players representing the Aussie Sharks; Joel Swift and 2012 London Olympian, Aaron Younger.

Our Community

Today, MWPC has 13 senior teams, 13 junior teams and 2 popular internal junior competitions running on Friday nights and Saturday mornings throughout the summer. This year, we have had record enrolments in our junior competitions with 880 children playing in our Friday night Flippaball and Saturday Junior Competitions. Every year the MWPC holds the Junior Tom Hoad Cup, an international junior tournament which has run since 2003. In the last 30 years we have had over 15,000 children start water polo through one of our junior programs and MWPC have given thousands of players the opportunity to play interstate and internationally. We are proud to say that we now have 14 Olympians among our members.

We pride ourselves on the relationships we have with our members, and the support we give to our local community. MWPC has a great volunteer base who contribute as coaches, officials and helpers to support our players, grow the sport, promote community spirit, and a healthy lifestyle.

From humble beginnings, the MWPC has come a long way. In our 70th season, we look forward to you joining us on our journey towards continued success – both in and out of the pool.
