I. Course Information

II. Prerequisite: No prerequisite. No Spanish experience necessary.

III. Course Description This course develops basic skills in pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, reading, listening comprehension, and oral and written communication, within the context of Spanish culture. This course presumes no prior study of the language; students with such experience should discuss proper placement with the department chair or an instructor of the language.

IV. Learning Objectives 1. To actively communicate in Spanish, making spontaneous use of structures and vocabulary studied. 2. To demonstrate an appreciation of contemporary Spanish culture through written and aural class work. 3. To demonstrate spoken Spanish in everyday contexts through responding to simple basic questions. 4. To illustrate reading comprehension through answering relevant questions on uncomplicated selections. 5. To use elements of beginning grammar through short listening, spoken, and written exercises. 6. To write simple sentences within the context of what has been studied.

V. Academic Integrity Students and employees at Oakton College are required to demonstrate academic integrity and follow Oakton’s Code of Academic Conduct. This code prohibits:

 cheating,  plagiarism (turning in work not written by you, or lacking proper citation),  falsification and fabrication (lying or distorting the truth),  helping others to cheat,  unauthorized changes on official documents,  pretending to be someone else or having someone else pretend to be you,  making or accepting bribes, special favors, or threats, and  any other behavior that violates academic integrity.

There are serious consequences to violations of the academic integrity policy. Oakton’s policies and procedures provide students a fair hearing if a complaint is made against you. If you are found to have violated the policy, the minimum penalty is failure on the assignment and, a disciplinary record will be established and kept on file in the office of the Vice President for Student Affairs for a period of 3 years.

VII. Methods of Instruction Prior to each class, students will write out the textbook exercises assigned on page 6. Class time will be devoted to going over the pages assigned and practicing, in large and small groups, sentence structures, expressions and vocabulary in the context of everyday functions. Videos will be shown in class for listening, comprehension and oral practice. Workbook/Lab manual and CD-ROM exercises will provide additional practice in reading, writing, listening and pronunciation skills.

VIII. Course Practices Required 1. In order to participate in class, students are required to come to class prepared (see pages 5-7). During class time, students will check their answers from the exercises done prior to class. At the end of each class, students will submit their corrected exercises for 5 points.

2. Chapter quizzes will focus on the material covered previously in class.

3. After the assigned textbook material is covered in class, students will do the assigned written and listening exercises online (CENTRO).

4. Complete a series of oral assignments.

5. Take a midterm and final exam.

Quizzes and exams will include a mix of listening, writing, reading and oral elements.

The Language Labs also have a large number of materials including other Spanish language-learning programs, videotapes, and vocabulary and grammar manuals for additional practice, reinforcement and enrichment. These materials are for reference only, and therefore must be used solely within the Language Labs.

XI. Other Important Course Information Textbook Assignments:  Must be neat and readable  They will only be accepted the day they are corrected in class  When a student is absent, he/she will not receive credit for the textbook assignment  Lowest two scores will be dropped

Homework assignments (CENTRO):  Must be submitted by the deadline  There will be exercises due every Friday of the semester (see pages 5-8)  Note: You must "pass" (i.e. 60% or better) the online homework in order to pass the class. If you receive a failing grade on the CENTRO exercises, you will fail the class.

Oral assignments:  Will be completed in the lab after quizzes  Will vary in style (partner activities, individual monologues, etc.)

Quizzes:  No make-up quizzes will be given  Lowest quiz score will be dropped at the end of the semester

Exams:  Except in the case of a medical emergency (verified with a doctor’s note) or when prior arrangement has been made with the instructor, no make-up exams will be given.

Attendance/Participation: Attendance/Participation are not included as a separate part of your overall grade but rather are incorporated into your grade via in-class assignments and quizzes. If you are in class, you will be participating. If you are not in class, it will affect your grade significantly. Starting with your 4th absence, your final grade will be dropped by 1% with each absence.

An Incomplete (I) Grade: An Incomplete must be requested no later than the week before the final exam date. It is not awarded automatically when coursework is incomplete. In order to qualify for an "I", students must have already taken the first two exams and handed in their corresponding assignments. The remaining course requirements must be completed within the eight week period allowed by the college. After that period of time, students who do not finish the course requirements will receive an F as their final grade.

The College will not waive any essential skill or requirement of a course or degree program.

 March 13, 2011: Midterm o Last day to withdraw with a “W” o No withdrawal after midterm. Students will receive a grade in all courses in which they are enrolled after March 13, 2011.
