SLIP DRESS DOCUMENTATION
By: Anna Glaeske DRAFTING FROM A TORSO BLOCK
From the torso block created in class, I made a slip dress pattern. The steps to turn the torso block into the dress is as follows:
1. Removed fisheye dart and moved dart to French dart 2. Added length 3. Adjusted neckline 4. Contoured neckline 5. Paper and Muslin Fit 6. Adjust the muslin 7. Add gores 8. Measure straps
The first mockup is pictured on the left. SEWING PROCESS:
The sewing process for the final dress is similar to how all garments are made. However, here is a rundown of the steps and following pictures. 1. Cut out fashion fabric
2. Serge all edges
3. Darts on back, front, and facings 4. Gores on front and backs
5. Add Facings
6. Invisible Zipper 7. Pockets and side seams
8. Straps
9. Hem CUT OUT AND SERGED
The pieces consisted of a front, two backs, 4 gores, 4 pocket pieces, and two straps.
I decided to serge the entire item because there was limited time to complete the project and it worked well with the fabric DARTS
The dress has one simple underarm dart on each side, applied to both facing and front.
The back has no darts. GORES
The gores were added to the bottom of the dress to add fullness and interest.
While they blend into the finished design, they do add a natural amount of flounce. The facings were added next to FACINGS finish the neckline of the dress. They ended just below the bust. ZIPPER
Next, I added an invisible zipper to the center back, leaving out the facing to turn under and tack down after. SIDE SEAMS AND POCKETS
The in-seam pockets were sewn to the front and backs, with the side seams being sewn up after. HEM AND STRAPS
Lastly, the straps and hem were sewn.
I decided to add the straps towards the end to ensure that the length was correct.
The hem was a simple narrow hem. FINISHED DRESS
