PRG's impressive rugby statistics 10/6/2003

Paul Roos has produced no less than 5 under 18 Craven week players this year: Mark Esterhuizen (centre) Jody Rose (fly half) Allistair Siegelaar (scrum half) Nel Coetzee and Joubert Horn (both locks) This year's Craven week will take place in Wellington from 7 to 12 July.

There will also be an under 16 Craven week for the first time. Four Paul Roos players were chosen to represent Western Province - this historic team will be captained by PRG lock Johan Stofberg, son of ex-Springbok captain Theuns Stofberg. The following under 16 players will take part between 30 June and 3 July in : Johan Stofberg (lock and captain) Jacques Southey (prop) Cameron Peverett (loose forward) Francois Bonthuys (scrum half)

Paul Roos is considered to be one of the most important rugby schools nationwide. Proof of this, are the following impressive statistics on Paul Roosers who represented during this year's rugby season: Cobus Visagie (tight head prop - SA against Scotland) Schalk Ferreira (loose head prop) and Nico de Villiers (tight head prop) were in the SA u/19 team that were recently crowned world champions when they won the under 19 World Cup in France. Andries Bekker (lock, chosen for the SA u/21 team to defend its World title in France later this season)

If the Paul Roos players excel like this, it stands to reason that their coaches do too: Messrs Frans van Niekerk and Jacques Hanekom are the co-coaches of the Paul Roos XV. Mr van Niekerk has once again been chosen as u/18 Craven week coach for 2003 and Mr Hanekom as WP u20 coach for 2003.

The Paul Roos tennis team took part in a tournament in Cradock in the Eastern Cape over the past few days. They played 45 tennis matches of which 37 were won and 8 were lost.

In the 3 round robin matches the Paul Roos team beat Cradock's team 8-1, Outeniqua of George 7-2 and Parktown Boys' High 9-0.

The Paul Roosers took on Grey College in the semi-finals and although the Stellenbossers beat them in games, and drew in points, Grey won one more match than the boys in maroon. Thus they played in the final against Waterkloof.

The PRG team had to play Cradock again, and the final score was 9-0 in our favour.

Paul Roos to host Founders' Hockey Festival in 2006 10/6/2003

Eight years since they started playing in the Founders' Hockey Festival, one of the most prestigeous boys' hockey tournaments in South Africa, Paul Roos has become a core school of this event. Paul Roos has also been appointed to host the 25th Founders' Festival in 2006.

The Founders' Festival was originally the brainchild of Mr Des Donald (Brebner) and Mr Mike Eddy (then ). Both schools at the time were on a roster for another tournament and were scheduled for a bye in 1982. The festival was originally played on Van Riebeeck Day, namely 6 April, hence the name "Founders' Festival".

The festival was established with five core schools, namely Fish Hoek, Brebner, Potcheffstroom Boys' High, SACS and Dale College. The number has increased to eight and today includes Northwood, Parktown, Wynberg and Grey High in . Brebner declined their core status in 1997 which left a gap for Paul Roos to become involved. It remains the prerogative of the host school to invite the other core members, as well as any other schools. So when SACS played host in 1997, they invited Paul Roos to play in the tournament for the first time.

Brebner and Dale College have hosted the festival on four occasions and on three occasions. The host schools for the next two years are SACS (2004) and Potchefstroom Boys' High (2005).

Although Paul Roos play hockey in the Boland league, they have built some close relations with some English schools in the southern suburbs, namely SACS, Wynberg, Rondebosch and Bishops. These schools often host teams from the United Kingdom. In April Paul Roos hosted Kings' School and in July they will host Nunnery Wood (under 14) and Tonnbridge (under 18). Paul Roos was also invited to an international hockey festival in August this year for 16 teams to be played in Cape Town of which 6 will be from England.

Paul Roos's hockey boomed in the mid nineties with input from Cari Rose-Innes and Paul Revington, former main coach at the school and now coach of South Africa's first mens' side. The school has 14 hockey teams at present. Furthermore 26 players from this school will represent Boland at the interprovincials during the winter holidays. According to Charles Knipe, hockey convenor at the school, they have been working very hard to promote hockey at the school since 1993. With professional coaches (mostly old boys), access to outstanding facilities and international exposure, the standard of Paul Roos Hockey is consistently on the rise. Therefore they most obliged to host the Founders' Festival in 2006.

Jarryd Botha - SA senior silver medalist 25/4/2003

Jarryd Botha, Paul Roos's wimming star par excellence, took part at the South African Open National Swimming Championships held in Durban from the 2nd - 7th of April 2003. He was a member of the senior W.P. swimming team .

In qualifying for 8 individual events, he selected to compete in only 4: the 50m , 100m , 200m backstroke as well as the 50m butterfly . Swimmers such as Olympic medallist Terence Parkin and Olympic competitors Roland Schoeman and Ryk Neetling and many other internationaly based swimmers took part .

Events were swum as heats in the morning and semi-finals in the evening, with the finals always the following evening. That applied to all 50m, 100m and 200m events . The rest of the distance event (400 - 1500) were all heats and formed part of the following evenings' finals .

In the 4 events that Jarryd took part in, he managed to qualify for the finals. This is an excellent achievement in its own right, taking into consideration that the top 8 swimmers in South Africa were competing in each event.

Jarryd had an amazing race in the 200m backstroke , finishing 2nd behind George Du Rand from the University of Tennessee. He then went on to be ranked 3rd going into the finals of the 50m backstroke, but finished 4th in the final, just being pipped by ex-Olympian, Simon Thirsk .

In the 100m backstroke , he again went from 3rd to 4th in the finals, again to Thirsk. In the 50m butterfly Jarryd did a deliberate false start in the final, due to the 100m backstroke final being shifted to straight after the butterfly. Being ranked 7th in the butterfly final, on a 25 : 55, with the 2nd ranked swimmer on a 24 : 98.

Jarryd was also part of the 4 x 50m freestyle relay. The team finished 3rd, with Jarryd having the fastest leg of all the W.P. swimmers and the 8th fastest out of all 56 swimmers in the relay teams.

Dan Hugo African Champion! 17/4/2003

Dan Hugo was crowned the All African Triathlon Champion on April 12th, ending his run of victories at Provincial, National, and now Continental Championships.

The seventeen-year old matric scholar, raised on a farm outside Worcester, relocated to Stellenbosch three years earlier. Paul Roos - and Stellenbosch at large - has proved a significant decision and is bearing the fruit of progress.

Hugo won the Western Province Triathlon Championships at Club Mykonos in February, the South African Championships at Maselspoort, Bloemfontein in March and the all African Championships in Swakopmund, this past weekend.

Dan moved clear in the two-lap spectator-friendly swim, worked well with a fellow countryman on the cycle leg and thus built a sizeable lead. The Paul Rouser's running power proved too much for his opponents and the Capetonian posted a winning time of 56:58, more than a 1:40 ahead of his closest challenger

In doing so, Dan Hugo qualifies for the South African team to the World Championships in December, hosted by New Zealand in Queenstown. The promising junior intends to leave for Auckland in November after completing his Matric exams where his coach and mentor, Jack Ralston, will prepare him for World Juniors on the seventh of December.

Dan really is one of the bright prospects on the Paul Roos triathlon frontier. Let's hope he continues on the path of brilliance to further success.

PRG third in Kearsney College Tennis Tournament 17/3/2003

The Paul Roos tennis side took part in the annual Kearsney College Tennis Tournament which is hosted by Kearsney College in Natal. The PRG team of 2002 won the trophy, establishing the school as the top tennis address in SA. But 5 of the 7 players matriculated at the end of 2002.

For the 2002 tournament, the Paul Roos side was seeded number one. Considering the young team of 2003, the organisers seeded the young and relatively inexperienced team sixth. PRG was up against Pretoria Boys’ High, DF Malan and Cradock High School.

The match against DF Malan was played on Friday afternoon and Paul Roos accumulated 18 points against the 6 of DF Malan.

Eventually, the team had to play against Grey College, Bloemfontein to establish 3rd and 4th Place for the tournament.

In 'n naelbyt spanningsvolle stryd het PRG se jong span daarin geslaag om aartsvyande Grey te klop - om sodoende as sesde gekeurde span die derde plek in die toernooi in te neem.

PRG athletics team wins Top 20 Challenge in Bloemfontein 17/2/2003

Paul Roos's ten star athletes competed in Bloemfontein at the prestigious Top 20 event. Schools from all over South Africa were invited and competition was fierce.

When the victorious team was announced, Paul Roos had done it again! It is only the second time that PRG could snatch the crown. All individual achievements were judged according to the ABSA table and the Maroon Machine eventually had an average of more than 900 ABSA points per athlete - an awesome achievement indeed.

Individual achievements are listed in the article: "Athletics: results of Top 20 Challenge" Athletics Challenge"

PRG invited to St John's 8th Rugby Festival 15/2/2003

JOHN'S COLLEGE LINES UP TOP LOCAL AND NEIGHBOURING SCHOOLS FOR ITS 8th RUGBY FESTIVAL during the Easter weekend 17 April to 21 April 2003

St John's College has attracted some of the country's top rugby schools, as well as two from neighbouring countries, for the school's eighth annual rugby festival to be held over the Easter weekend.

The College is also delighted that the Festival will be used, for the fourth year running, to support the College's outreach to Johannesburg's Alex Wanderers Rugby School. And in keeping with the Festival's strong ties with the and by now a festival tradition, a Golden Lions development side will be participating.

The 12 sides taking part in the 2003 Festival are:

Glenwood High School, Golden Lions Development XV Grey College (Bloemfontein), Michaelhouse Hoërskool Nelspruit, Hoërskool Waterkloof Outeniqua High School, Paarl Boys' High School Paul Roos Gimnasium, Prince Edward School (, Zimbabwe), St John's College (hosts), Windhoek High School

Six games will be contested at St John's College each day, Thursday 17 April, Saturday 19 April and Easter Monday 21 April. All will be played on the College's main rugby ground, Burger Field, starting at 09h00 on each day.

On the adjoining Endean field will be beer and food tents, cold drink and ice-cream sales, and a full entertainment programme. A big TV screen in the beer tent will cater for all Super 12 fans.

For the third year running, a Big Screen (video board) will be erected on the west side of Burger Field which will show the game being played, screen action replays, act as a scoreboard and flight ads for sponsors, advertisers and supporters.

Free, secure parking will be provided on the College's lower rugby fields and street parking will be monitored by a professional security company.

The Festival was initiated in 1996 by the St John's College community to give its pupils the occasion to play opponents whom they would not meet during the normal schedule of school matches, and to celebrate good quality school rugby. Emphasis has been placed on the festival aspect of the event - all participants are winners, there are no losers.

In it's seven years, the Festival has proved enormously popular among pupils, staff, players and the wider Gauteng rugby-loving public. The backdrop of the College's Herbert Baker/Frank Fleming- designed buildings provide one of the most scenic settings for rugby in South Africa.

Paul Roos Triathlete to Mexico 15/2/2003

On 3 November 2002 Dan Hugo, PRG Headboy of 2003, left for Cancun, Mexico. He was selected as one of only three South African junior tri-athletes to take part in the World Championships.

Triathletes from 72 countries gathered on Thursday the 7th for a 'Parade of Nations', which was followed by a carbo-loading pasta party and opening ceremony. The juniors', the under 23's and the other age groups' races were on Saturday, while the elite male and female races took part on Sunday 10 November.

83 Juniors from all over the world lined up on a pontoon extending into warm, clear blue waters. It made for a perfect, picturesque start. The first leg, a 750m swim, was followed by a flat, technical 20km bike course. After that, a fast 5km run lay ahead. Hot and humid climatic conditions, typical of this subtropical region, made this competition a real challenge for the athletes.

Hugo finished 23rd in the under 19 junior race, an achievement which he was very happy with. 'The entire experience was all inspiring. To see the world's best talents is really motivational,' he told reporters.

There always is a lot to learn from other athletes, and hopefully Dan can put this into practice when he takes part in the ITU World Triathlon Championships in Nieu-Seeland later this year.
