Request to name the Artificial Ice Rink at Christie Pits in honour of Sid Smith

SUMMARY

A member of the community, under the criteria of the Property Naming Policy, has initiated an application to name the artificial ice rink at Christie Pits, located at 750 Bloor Street West, in honour of Sid Smith and Toronto's hockey history. Property naming and renaming are a matter for which Community Council has delegated authority from City Council to make a final decision.

The Parks, Forestry and Recreation Division has reviewed the Council-approved City of Toronto Property Naming Policy and found that this naming proposal meets the policy criteria and process.

The Parks, Forestry and Recreation Division is recommending that the artificial ice rink in Christie Pits located at 750 Bloor Street West be named the Sid Smith Artificial Ice Rink.

RECOMMENDATIONS

The General Manager of Parks, Forestry and Recreation Division recommends that:

1. Toronto and East York Community Council adopt the naming of the artificial ice rink in Christie Pits located at 750 Bloor Street West as the Sid Smith Artificial Ice Rink.

There are no financial implications resulting from the adoption of this report.

COMMENTS

An application to name the artificial ice rink at Christie Pits to honour Sid Smith and Toronto's hockey history was received from a member of public.

Sidney James Smith, was born July 11, 1925 in Toronto. As a youngster, he practiced on the ice rink in Christie Pits every chance he could. This is where his love for hockey began. He played in minor leagues in Toronto and later with the in the . Sid Smith played his entire NHL career as a left-winger with the from approximately 1946-58. He was team captain from 1955 to 1956. Sid Smith played in seven All-Star Games, won three Stanley Cups, the John B. Sollenberger Trophy and two Lady Byng Memorial Trophies.

Public Consultation

In accordance with the City of Toronto, Property Naming Policy, Parks, Forestry and Recreation staff produced and posted a temporary sign in the park advising the local community and parks users of the request to name the artificial ice rink in Christie Pits the Sid Smith Artificial Ice Rink. The sign requested that anyone interested should send comments and feedback via email to [email protected]. This sign was posted at the artificial ice rink from February 23 to March 10, 2017. Parks, Forestry and Recreation did not received any objections to this naming request.
