Winter Sport Results - Term 2 2008 Home School - Scotch V Hale Date: 31 October/1 November 2008 Sport Basketball Result Comment 8A SC Win 40-37 Scotch 40 defeated Hale 37 8B HS Win 41-26 Hale 41 defeated Scotch 26. The 8Bs had a much improved game gaining a few players from the 8As who stabilised the team. The team got off to a poor start missing many of our shots and giving away possession which Hale capitalised on. Through Calvin Best and Elliot Shipman, Scotch started to score points with some good team work especially on the fast break. Even though Scotch was behind in the second half, the team began to take a more proactive approach in defence and attack. This game was much more constructive even though we lost 41-26 showing great improvement from our first game. The team look forward to improving the combinations for the oncoming games. Calvin Best & Elliot Shipman were Scotch’s best players. 8C HS Win 56-13 Hale 56 defeated Scotch 13 9A SC Win 47-36 Scotch 47 defeated Hale 36. The 9As had a brilliant win Hale, 47-36. The game was tough in the first half with scores being level at half time. Lead by charger Daniel Gamble, Scotch picked up a quick 10 point lead to control the game. Nicholas Simpson, coming up from the 9Bs, received a notable mention out performing expectations. The team is looking great, hopefully next week we can have a big win over Guildford. 9B HS Win 33-28 Hale 33 defeated Scotch 28. The 9Bs despite an improved team performance were defeated by Hale. We started well with every boy playing with more intensity than last week. Lachlan Hunt and Patrick Clyne were prominent in the first half, creating numerous scoring opportunities which included some great drives to the basket. Hale applied a full court press for much of the game and this resulted in a number of turnovers, enabling them to lead 22 –15 at half time. In the second half Scotch improved defensive pressure on Hale’s ball carriers and offensive rebounding with Gavin Chee leading the way and receiving strong support from Tushar Agrawal and Jack Sones. If not for a number of careless passes and lapses in concentration, the result may have been different. Gavin Chee was the leading scorer, scoring the last nine points of the game for Scotch, which included a half court “Hail Mary” on the final buzz, which brought our supporters to their feet and cut the final margin to 5 points. 9C Sc Win 39-28 Scotch 39 defeated Hale 28 9D SC Win 30-14 Scotch 30 defeated Hale 14. A great game played by all boys in testing conditions. Hale brought to the game a lot of cheek and smart but lacking in the depth the Scotch boys demonstrated throughout the game. SC1 HS Win 32-31 Hale 32 defeated Scotch 31. Another one point defeat for SC1. Scotch showed good signs, but should have been able to beat a smaller Hale side. Tim Flicker again controlled the point well. A strong performance from Stuart Walton was a very pleasing sign. SC2 round round robin robin SC3 round round robin robin 3rd HS Win 31 to 12 Hale 31 defeated Scotch 12 2nd HS Win 35-31 Hale 35 defeated Scotch 31. The game was defensive but slow as the team struggled to score. With 10 mins left, we decided to change the tempo of the game and it worked with the boys putting on a 10-2 run to get within 4 points. Scotch had many chances to win but could not convert. Seb Hoskins was Scotch's best player but had to leave the game with an ankle injury. Nick Hoad also had a good game; he is showing considerable improvement which is really good to see. 1st SC Win 58-55 Scotch 58 defeated Hale 55. After a close game against Aquinas the week before, Scotch entered the game versus Hale with plenty of positivity and the continued spirit to play team basketball. Scotch faced a big Hale line up, but with Andrew and Jake on court, Scotch matched up very well. The game started at a very fast pace with both teams going bucket for bucket and foul for foul. The end of the first half saw Hale run into the half with a 5 point lead. Scotch started the second half with purpose and it was showing on the score board as Hale won back the lead. It was a great game from start to finish with Scotch claiming its first win of the season by three points. Andrew Moore led the scoring with 17 points and some big defensive blocks. Sam Smith was handy with 9 points, including a vital 3 point shot down the stretch. Jake McNally chipped in with 8 points. Patrick Mellor was inspirational at both ends of the court, including a last second steal and lay up to seal our first win. Zeke Zalsman continues to prove his worth running off the bench and his defensive smarts created many opportunities for the team to score off fast breaks. , Mark Hennessy, was also inspirational as he created and controlled from the point guard position. Mark’s positive encouragement and team work really binds the team together. Tim Donohue plays with a bit of class and a whole lot of competitive spirit which was invaluable against the big Hale team. Patrick Bolton made the most of his time on the court and with explosive speed and tight defense, he was a good back up for Mark Hennessy. Samuel Clements played his first game on the1sts team and was very solid running off the bench; his aggression and endeavor was appreciated by the whole team. A great team effort. Cricket Result Comment 8A v Game still in progress Guildford 8B v Game still in progress. Robbie Webster once again batted well forming a number of solid Guildford partnerships in the middle order and scoring a brilliant 40. Alex Baum came in towards the end and picked up the run rate, with a quick fire 30. 8C v Aquinas Game still in progress 9A v Game still in progress Guildford 9B v Game still in progress Guildford 9C v Hale Game still in progress 4th HS Win 145-119 Hale 145 defeated Scotch 119. Scotch was pleased to get their first game of the season and despite losing, the game was relatively close. The match was played in excellent spirit with bowlers from both sides a maximum of three overs each. This ensured that nearly everyone got a bowl and no one person could dominate. Similarly both sides batted 12 and so all 24 players got a bat. This approach ensured that all players would work hard at training, knowing they will be expected to contribute to the cause. Scotch lost the toss and was put in to bat at a time of the day when the ball was swinging significantly. Scotch was in trouble early and at one stage were 7 down for 34 runs and a short game looked likely. Thankfully for Scotch Tom Kempin (21) steadied the ship. He was joined later by Curtis Liebeck (38) who took advantage of Hale’s more inexperienced bowlers, and with a healthy contribution from the extras and a few dropped catches, Scotch made it through to 119. Hale started their innings the same way as Scotch did and Tim Creagh (2/19) picked up two early and Hale were 2/3. Kim Hocking (1/8) bowled tightly and Hale looked like they were going to struggle. At 4/42 the game was in the balance but the fifth yielded 90 runs for Hale and the game was theirs. Their two batsmen retired and Scotch was left to mop up. Curtis Liebeck bowled with fire but no luck while Tom Irving (3/13) bowled accurately and in his last over, bowled a double wicket maiden ensuring Scotch finished strongly. Several catches were grassed but generally the 4ths enjoyed their outing. 3rd HS Win 109 - 108 Hale 109 defeated Scotch 108. Thirds went down by 6 wickets on Saturday. We batted first and made 108 off the 30 overs. Jeremy Nixon top scored with 21. Hale managed to make the runs with 7 balls to spare. 2nd HS Win 80-76 Hale 80 defeated Scotch 76. It was a magnificent day for cricket with a fresh breeze blowing. The Scotch contingent won the toss and elected to bowl. Captain Ben Kiernan-Green and Michael Park bowled well putting Hale in trouble at 4/29. The rest of the Scotch bowlers in pacemen, Josh Tilley, Jack Chamberlain, Nick Munro, gentle medium pacer Kip Cameron and spinner Sean Carr, bowled superbly to have Hale routed for 80. Scotch came to the crease with twenty minutes to bat before lunch and was in trouble at 2/4 with Kip Cameron and Stef D'Orsogna back in the pavilion. Michael Hobson and Hamish Stein steadied the ship and did all the hard work until the score was 2/33. Wickets tumbled as Scotch became rattled by good line and length bowling by Hale. Scotch was also routed for 76. After tea, Hale batted a second time and was in trouble at 6/68, through good tight bowling and some fantastic ground fielding by Scotch. At the close of play Hale was 8/137. Scotch’s bowling was superb all day and their ground fielding was high class. Catching needs to improve, having them 6/68 in the second innings Scotch dropped some chances. The team spirit has been fantastic at the three games played so far. 1st SC Win 5/189- 8/184 Scotch 5/189 defeated Hale 8/184. Scotch won the toss and put Hale into bat. Scotch had a good start with Hale 5/24. Opening bowlers Clements and Paris took 3 and 2 wickets respectively. Kerr and Hitchen both took good catches in the slips. Hale managed to recover with some good batting and hard hitting reaching 8/184. After lunch the wicket seemed to settle down and batting became easier. Scotch bowled a good line early, however the line and length dropped away, along with some poor fielding, resulting in Hale being able to manufacture a respectable score. Scotch got off to a good start with Joel Paris batting well, before he was unfortunately run out. Bosisto and King then struggled until tea. However, it was pleasing that only one wicket had been lost. After tea, Scotch set themselves a target of attempting to score off 4 balls per over. This resulted in good batting with the scoring increases, going into the last hour in a good position needing 70 runs off the final 17 overs. Bosisto finished with 51 and King went on to make 84. In the final overs Kerr and Foley withstood the pressure and the team finished up 5/189 to record a good win. Tennis Result Comment 8A SC Win 102-62 Scotch 102 defeated Hale 62 8B HS Win 93-67 Hale 93 defeated Scotch 67. The 8Bs played gallantly against a strong Hale opponent. In the mild conditions, the boys played well and showed respect for their opposition, however sadly lost. At Floreat Tennis Club, the 3rds Tennis squad defeated a weaker Hale opponent with impressive style and class. With the top four players only dropping 2 sets in their singles, the first round of matches was looking positive for Scotch. In the second round, the top four players, again annihilating their Hale opponents, combined with superb sportsmanship. Congratulations to the team as a whole for a strong victory. 2nd SC Win 16 to 8 Scotch 16 defeated Hale 8. This was a convincing win against Hale and the players should be proud of the results. The order of play proved to be inaccurate and this will need to be rectified through a series of challenges in the forthcoming weeks. Chris Hendricks and Nic Sweeney were impressive in their singles games and Nelson Wisniewski moved the ball around well in his first singles set. Chris backed up a solid singles victory with a doubles win, combining successfully with Riley Stewart. 1st HS Win 15 to 9 Hale 15 defeated Scotch 9. As expected Hale proved to a tough opponent. Geoff Dwyer played outstanding Tennis to defeat Hale 2-0 in singles. Aidan Crabb and Will Benson came back after losing their first set to win the second. Andrew Jonklaas played consistently to confidently win both his singles. In the doubles Tim Inglis and Dylan McCloskey turned the tables on Hale's 1 and 2 by defeating them in both sets of the doubles, in what was one of the best PSA doubles matches played. In all, Scotch tried hard but fell short overall. Volleyball Result Comments 8/9A HS Win 3-0 Hale 3 defeated Scotch 0 8/9B HS Win 3-0 Hale 3 defeated Scotch 1 8/9C Round Robin

The 2nds Water Polo match produced a winning performance against one of our biggest rivals, Hale. This took our unbeaten run this season to three. Scotch started off slowly, looking a bit sluggish in the pool. Scotch, as a team, could not capitalize on our opportunities. In the 2nd quarter, the boys managed to find some rhythm and gain some momentum to take into the last two quarters. It is pleasing to see that the 2nds team have a great team spirit. 1st HS Win 8 to 3 Hale 8 defeated Scotch 3. Another hard fixture was in place, when the team faced Hale. A good week of training with the focus on covering the counter-attack and setting up the pool saw Scotch hold their own with a nil all score in the first four minutes of the game. All felt the pressure and our guard was let down and 5 goals were scored against us at the close of half time. Scotch’s focus seemed to be lost. But a determined team, who was tiring very early on, came back with an enormous bang – perhaps due to the show that was been put on above their heads by the jet fighter from the Red Bull Air Race. Three very classy goals with the assistance from a young centre forward saw the team build their confidence up, much to the surprise of the Hale team. The game plan was in effect with the cover in place but our static set up in attack saw the ball being wasted and opportunities that presented themselves were lost. The level of commitment that Scotch has shown will set us apart from other teams. Lets build our strength again and be ready for Guildford!
