Bold = MSU Opponent COACH CHANDLER ON PREPARING FOLEY FOR THE NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS * = Big Ten Conference team “We’ve kept the entire team together for the last week and a half since the Big Tens. We’ve been preparing as As of 2/20/18 if the whole team was qualified, because that’s where we expect to be for the future. I give our team a lot of credit. They’re brought a lot of energy to the room which is important for Rayvon as he prepares, and I think for the most part he has had a typical preparation experience even though he’s the only qualifier.”

COACH CHANDLER ON THE DIFFERENCE OF PREPARING ONE WRESTLER “From a preparation standpoint, it’s a lot easier because you don’t have to scout as many people, but we’ve tried to treat this as we have multiple national qualifiers because that’s the expectation for our program.”

COACH CHANDLER ON HOW RAYVON’S SEASON WILL HELP AGAINST THE NO. 1 SEED BIG TEN SCHEDULE “Rayvon’s wrestled a lot of the top guys in the country. Rayvon’s strength is that he likes to go out and look to score points. Obviously, he’s wrestling the returning national champion, but that’s not going to change. He THIS WEEK’S SCHEDULE still has that mindset, and he’s going to go out looking to attack and score points. I know he expects to win.” Thursday, March 15 Session I - 12 p.m. COACH CHANDLER ON COACHING IN HIS HOMETOWN OF CLEVELAND “The reality is, I have not been back in Cleveland on a full-time basis for 20-some odd years. It’s nice to be back Session II - 7 p.m. in my hometown. I’m very familiar with the area. It’ll be good to see a lot of people that I know.”

LAST TIME OUT: FOLEY PLACES SEVENTH AT BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIPS Friday, March 16 Freshman 125-pounder Rayvon Foley finished as a place winner in his first appearance at BigTen Session III - 11 a.m. Championships, claiming seventh place among a challenging field of competition. Michigan State hosted the Session IV - 8 p.m. Big Ten Championships this weekend for the first time since 2007 at the Breslin Center in East Lansing.

“It’s been great for us to feature the sport of wrestling in the state of Michigan,” MSU head coach Roger Saturday, March 17 Chandler said. “I think this conference and this championship is the best event in the country, and that’s why we get the fan support that we do. Our Michigan State event management and administration have done a Session V - 11 a.m. great job featuring wrestling, featuring Michigan State and the rest of the country.” Session VI - 8 p.m.

Foley, the 17th-ranked grappler in the nation at 125 pounds, wrestled against Elijah Oliver from Indiana, a three-time NCAA Championships qualifier. In the second match-up between the two this weekend, Foley secured a takedown with just 20 seconds left to take a 6-4 decision in the seventh place match.

“It means a lot. I didn’t get exactly what I wanted. I want to win, I want to be number one, I want to take first place and become a Big Ten champion, but I can’t do it this year,” Foley said. “I’ll just have to wait for next year, but I’m always striving to get better. This is just motivation for me to get better. It feels good. Like I said, things didn’t turn out exactly like I wanted them to, but I definitely think it’s a big deal. I enjoy going out there wrestling. It’s my first Big Ten championship and it won’t be my last.”

Foley qualified for NCAA Championships with a win on the first day of competition against Oliver. Foley also INTERMAT RANKINGS knocked off No. 12 Drew Mattin for a second time this season in wrestlebacks on Saturday. Rank Team Team Pts “I know Rayvon accomplished his goal of getting to the NCAA Championships, but I know he’s got bigger goals 1 Ohio State* 140 than that,” Chandler said. “Rayvon truly wants to win an NCAA Championship and he’s got the mentality to 2 Penn State* 128.5 compete for a national title, and you know this is just the first step in that process. You throw your hat in the ring, 3 Missouri 101.5 and you punch your ticket to the NCAA championships. He did that the last two days, and in a week and a half, 4 Michigan* 81.5 he’s going to get his chance to be an All-American, which would be an incredible feat for himself.” 5 North Carolina State 72.5 6 Iowa* 71 Redshirt freshmen Jwan Britton (149) and Jake Tucker (157) started off the day with matches in the extra 7 Lehigh 69.5 bracket, both falling to their opponents. Britton fell to Cole Martin of Wisconsin in a major decision, 15-3. An 8 Virginia Tech 62 aggressive match, Britton made a run at the end of the match but didn’t have enough time. Tucker dropped to 9 Oklahoma State 58 Illinois’ Kyle Langenderfer, 7-3, coming back from a 4-1 deficit with a reversal in the second period, but giving 10 Arizona State 56.5 up a late takedown in the third and a bonus point for riding time. 11 Cornell 44.5 12 Illinois* 42 “Jake had a good run last night,” Chandler said. “It was hard to come back this morning because we knew 13 Wyoming 41.5 we were wrestling the same opponent back-to-back because he wrestled Langenderfer, and beat him pretty 14 South Dakota State 41 soundly, but people make quick adjustments and that was just a tough match. Jake left it all out on the mat, and 15 Rutgers* 31 that’s what we ask of our guys, and there’s no doubt he’s going to grow from this experience.” 16 Northwestern* 21 17 Nebraska* 20.5 Spartan alumni and Big Ten Champions David Morgan, Nick Simmons, Pat McNamara, Pat Milkovich, Don 18 Duke 20 Behm, Andy Simmons, Tom Milkovich, Dick Cook, Mike Bradley and Larry Avery returned to the campus of 19 Minnesota* 19.5 Michigan State to present the awards to the newly crowned Big Ten title winners. 20 Northern Iowa 19 21 North Carolina 18.5 Ohio State was the tournament champion, scoring 164.5 points for its second consecutive Big Ten title. 22 Lock Haven 18 Michigan State finished in 14th place. 23 Oregon State 17.5 24 Rider 15 “Overall, I just talked to our team a little while ago, and any time you lose two of your three returning NCAA 25 Central Michigan 14.5 qualifiers, it’s going to hit your team,” Chandler said. “We’re missing two of our big guns in Drew Hughes and Austin Eicher, and they scored a lot of points for us last year at the Big Tens, and we’re going to get those guys Bold = MSU Opponent back, but at the same time a lot of these guys that wrestled in the championships got invaluable experience.
