NORTH REGIONAL ATHLETICS BOARD MINUTES OF THE MEETING HELD ON 15.10.2010 AT PRESTATYN BOWLS CENTRE

1. Present: P. Brooks, G. Hughes, R. Snaith, D. Harris, B. Harris, D. A. Williams, L. Ingram, L. Royle, C. Blackshall, P. Jones (Jnr.), K. Wingate, D. Davies, S. Sayer, B. Edwards, S. McCormack, S. Brace. 2. Apologies: S. Livett, M. Blake, A. Lewis. 3. Minutes of the Last Meeting and Matters Arising: (Previous minutes in italics) 3.1: 4.3 should read Welsh team not G.B. and also included Sally Peake. 3.2: 8.2.1. should read Welsh record not G.B. record. 3.3: 3.1 the Village Bakery half marathon is now on Sunday 27/2/2011 and the Welsh national cross country championships are on Saturday 19/2/2011. 3.4: 7.1 in response to a question concerning the nomination of John Pares for an award from Welsh Athletics (W.A.), the meeting was given details of the criteria to qualify. 3.5: 8.3.3. D.A. Williams confirmed that the Welsh Masters’ cross country championships are to be held separately from the Inter Region championships, at next year. 4.: Steve Brace, Head of Athletics Development for W.A. 4.1: He had attended a meeting with the Unitary Authorities and others, regarding the proposed events in the North, next year. The races will include a 24 hour event, a 56km trail race and an up and down 12km fell race. There will also be events for young athletes. It is also likely that the Caernarfon 10km road race will move to the same weekend and finish in the town centre. It is also hoped for S4C coverage of the events. 4.2: He also gave advance notice of the Welsh cross country championships, to be held in Northop next year on 19/2/2011, commencing at noon. The chair thanked him for his attendance and he left the meeting. 5. Chair’s Comments: 5.1: She congratulated Gareth Warburton (4th), Laura Douglas (in the top 8) and Sally Peake (9th), for their performances at the Commonwealth Games. 5.2: Regional Clubs can bid for the U17 & U/20 championships 2011, but will need funding to be in place first.

NORTH WALES REGIONAL ATHLETICS BOARD MINUTES OF THE MEETING HELD ON 15.10.2010 AT PRESTATYN BOWLS CENTRE - 2 - 5.3: There is a problem with dates for the Welsh indoor championships and the Celtic games indoor match. 5.4: The Regional indoor championships will be held at Deeside on 16/1/2011 and the Inter Region outdoor championships will be held at Deeside in 2011. 5.5: She congratulated Colwyn Bay A.C. and David Williams on the record turnout at the first N.W.C.C.L meeting of the 2010/11 season. 6.0: Treasurer’s Report: 6.1: In response to an e-mail form Bob Frost of Wrexham A.C., Dilwyn Davies reported that the bill for track hire and first aid cover at the Junior track and field meeting this year, should be first paid to W.A., who will, then reimburse the Club. 6.2: Paul Brooks reported on the donation from Sheila Symonds, which she had asked be used for a perennial trophy and the cost of a new pair of trainers each year; the award will go to the best road runner under 23 years of age. 6.3: Dilwyn gave details of the income and expenditure since the last meeting and the balance in the account. 7.0 Officials Secretary (Endurance): Paul Brooks is attending a UKA course in Solihull on 5/12/2010. 7.1: Officials Secretary (Track and Field): Denise Harris reported that there are now 43 graded officials in the Region. She wants to put on a level 2 course locally and is considering another in Newtown. She will also contact Bangor University, Eryri and Oswestry to see if there is any interest in the courses. 8.0 Reports: 8.1 Road: Paul Brooks reported that: 8.1.1. the Regional 10km championships at Caernarfon had been won by Brendan Rothery (Eryri) and Emma Collins (Denbigh). 8.1.2. 15 athletes had represented the Region in the Inter Region 10km championships in Cardiff, which had also doubled as the National championships. Marilyn Kitching (Tattenhall) had won the women’s title, with Erika Robinson (Buckley) taking bronze; David Mountford (Deeside) had won the U/20 men’s title. The Inter Region results were not yet to hand.

- 3 – 8.1.3: The W.A. Welsh Masters marathon championships had been held at Anglesey and Ian James (Wrexham) had won the men’s title. The open race had been won by Jenny Brierley (Bangor Uni), with Dean Longley (Prestatyn) placing third. 8.1.4: The next event planned for the development squad will be the Alsager 5 miles in February 2011. 8.1.5: The new national secretary for course measurement is Phil Holland. His address and e-mail are on the N.W.R.A.C. website. 8.2 Track and Field 8.2.1. Sue Sayer reported that a new UKA logbook for officials is being issued. 8.2.2. She also reported that the W.A. Combined Events indoor championships are to be held at UWIC on 6/11/2010 and will also include the W.S.A.A.A. championships. 8.3 Cross Country: David Williams presented a written report: 8.3.1. 127 attended the first N.W.J.C.C.L. meeting, with 296 attending the Senior league match later that day. He had been delighted with the numbers and gave details of the individual winners of each race. 8.3.2. He congratulated Gareth Hughes for winning the W.A. Off-road Official of 2010 award and the meeting added their congratulations. 8.3.3. Paul Brooks reported that the races for young athletes at the Snowdonia marathon had been cancelled as the date clashed with the N.W.J.C.C.L. meeting. David noted that Eryri Harriers had moved their date to accommodate a fell event that day. 8.3.4. The Regional championships, sponsored by Rhug Organic, are to be held at Corwen on 29/1/2011. 8.4 Fell and Mountain: Sue read a written report from Mike Blake: 8.4.1. Eryri ladies’ team had won the British championships, with Jackie Lee 3rd overall. The meeting recorded their congratulations. 8.4.2. The Regional championships had been held at the Great Orme on 18/9. He had been disappointed at the low turnout, but felt that the inclement weather had played a part. He thanked the helpers and the match sponsors. 8.6 Schools: No report. 8.7: Sportshall/Development/Grass Roots: Barry Edwards reported that Shane Parry had now left his post, which was being advertised and gave a report on the following: NORTH WALES REGIONAL ATHLETICS BOARD MINUTES OF THE MEETING HELD ON 15.10.2010 AT PRESTATYN BOWLS CENTRE - 4 - 8.7.1: 100 young athletes had attended the Dragons Dash in Anglesey and that the Startrack events had 60 youngsters in attendance, with a further meeting set for later in October, which Gareth Warburton will visit. He is also working with the Urdd on athletic events. 8.7.2: Menai track and field now has a waiting list for those wishing to attend training nights. 8.7.3: Steve Livett has been nominated for 2 awards in Anglesey. 8.7.4: He gave a report on the Celtic games in Ireland. 8.7.5: He has held 2 coach education courses in Anglesey, with a further one planned for Gwynedd. There are level 1 courses planned for North and South Gwynedd and Anglesey. 8.7.6: He has been working with Clwb dal I fynd and was involved with their cross country event and also on an event planned with R.A.F. Valley on 19/10. 8.7.7: Work on “Club Mark” is nearly complete. 8.7.8: He is working in conjunction with W.A., coaching at Ysgol Bont, a school for disabled pupils. 8.7.9: dates and venues are in place for Sportshall meetings in Anglesey and Gwynedd. The chair thanked Barry for all his work. 8.8 Athlete Welfare Officer: Nothing to report. 9. General Council: No report. 10. Rules and Eligibility: Sue and Paul will meet Clwydian Range Runners and Buckley Runners to discuss the wearing of Club vests at fell/mountain events. Nothing further. 11. Regional Road Running Championships 2011: 11.1 The events will be: 5 Miles, Abergele; 5km, Rhyl; 10km, Caernarfon; 10 miles, Wrexham. After debate it was agreed that the Wrexham half marathon be the championships event. However, provided the problems experienced at the Conwy half marathon in 2009 do not reappear this year, that event be awarded the championships in 2012. 11. Any Other Business: Sue reported that the Region’s motion to the W.A. A.G.M., which had been held over form last year, would be debated at this year’s meeting, although it does not appear on the circulated agenda. It relates to the Inter Region cross country championships going to each Region in turn. 12. Date and Venue of next meeting: Friday 10th December 2010 at Prestatyn Indoor Bowls Centre, commencing at 7.0 p.m.
