Over the course of the summer, a number of our talented local performers will lead a Walk for Wellbeing in the great outdoors.

These walks with music, song or storytelling will take a small audience along one of the many coastal routes around the island. The artists will play music and chat about why they chose their route as well as give a few insights into the historic significance of the area.

All walks will be accompanied by a qualified Covid Officer to ensure the safety of the audience and leader.

Local artists in the scheme so far are Innes Watson (top picture); Iseabail Strachan (bottom picture); Angus and Eilidh MacKenzie; Anne Martin; and Donald Livingstone.

This is a chance to breathe in some fresh air, take in the magnificent scenery, enjoy the entertainment and the banter while getting in a bit of exercise too.

Please bring your own picnic and/or refreshments, take a pair of hardy, comfortable shoes and dress for the weather.

Critically-acclaimed Scottish fiddle player, Ross Couper, hails from an incredibly musical family in the Shetland Islands. He started to play the fiddle at the age of eight in school but his musical interest had been ignited long before then.

In the Anderson High School in Lerwick he received lessons from his mother, a renowned fiddle teacher, Margaret Scollay.

After Shetland he studied at Plockton Centre of Excellence for Traditional Music, the first Shetlander to do so. From there he went on to obtain a degree in Folk and Traditional Music at Newcastle University.

Through this time he played with many different groups including award-winning band Bodega. With Bodega he toured all over Europe and in America where he met Peatbog Faeries at the Milwaukee Irish Festival.

The Story Wagon is a space to share stories. This tiny outdoor venue will be hosting talks and workshops throughout the week. Check the timetable for a mix of writing activities, storytelling sessions and talks.

The Wagon is packed with typewriters, books, pens and paper. It's the ideal place to spend a few minutes, or many hours exploring the places writing and reading can take you. Record tales of your own using their equipment or commission a custom story to be written just for you.

Over the course of 10-12 August, our live literature event will feature talks by some of Scotland’s most talented wordsmiths plus the launch of an important poetry pamphlet written, printed and produced on Skye for this event.

“And so Somersault” is Myles Campbell’s remarkable Gaelic poem about a night away in the faerie hill. “You will accept it/ accept the flood….” This unique event launches the first English translation, side-by-side with the Gaelic.

Some of the poem will be read in both languages and the writer Alastair McIntosh will engage Myles in a most unlikely conversation: about faerie and imagination, the second sight, meeting his wife and coming to faith in the Free Church. He is the author of six books of non- fiction and his recent work Island Dreams - Mapping an Obsession (2020) was shortlisted for Waterstones Book of the Year.

Blending stories of his own travels with psychology, philosophy and great voyages from literature, Island Dreams seeks to shed new light on the importance of islands of isolation in the collective cultural consciousness, from Robinson Crusoe to Desert Island Discs.

Daily Record Golden Fiddle Award-winner Charlie McKerron is one of Scotland’s finest fiddle players, He has been a member of the critically-acclaimed Celtic music band Capercaillie since 1985 and is part of the much in-demand trad band Session A9.

An accomplished composer Charlie’s music has been widely recorded and he has contributed to the film Rob Roy, Four Men and a Malt and Gruth is Uachdar (Crowdie and Cream) which he co-wrote with Donald Shaw, for which they received 2 RTS awards. Charlie also co- produced the album Big Sky which involved some of Scotland’s top contemporary Celtic musicians.

Charlie can also been seen performing with Marc Clements, Finlay MacDonald Band, Maggie MacInnes and has been involved in projects with Kevin MacKenzie and Aidan O’Rourke.

BBC Radio 2 Folk Singer Of The Year 2018, Karine Polwart is a multi-award winning Scottish songwriter and musician, as well as theatre- maker, storyteller, spoken-word performer and author.

Her songs combine folk influences and myth with themes as diverse as Donald Trump’s corporate megalomania, Charles Darwin’s family life and the complexities of modern parenthood.

She sings traditional songs too and writes to commission for film, theatre, animation and thematic collaborative projects. Karine is seven- times winner at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, including three times for Best Original Song.

Oceanallover is a collaborative performance company led by artist Alex Rigg. Flautist, pianist and folk composer Hamish Napier from Strathspey joins Skye's Innes Watson, guitarist and fiddle player originally from the Borders, to perform new music from Hamish’s award-winning album The Woods (Scots Trad Music Award’s Album of the Year 2020).

The music explores Scotland’s native trees, the Gaelic Tree Alphabet and the flora and fauna of Cairngorms Connect (an epic 200-year habitat restoration project in the Cairngorms).

The duo have performed together with Duncan Chisholm, Mike Vass, Man’s Ruin, the Small Halls festival band and numerous other ensembles over the years. Soulful slow airs, vibrant reels and jigs, and plenty of stories about the inspiration for each tunes.
