CONTENTS RABBI’S MESSAGE RABBI’S Death and Life in Israel MESSAGE 1 Past and Present Rabbi Daniel Cotzin Burg CANTOR’S CORNER 3 Yes, yes, I know I was just there! This February, as you know, PRESIDENT’S I led a Beth Am Synagogue trip to Medinat Yisrael. In addition, for PERSPECTIVE 4 some time, Miriam and I have been planning to take our children

CONGREGATION back to Israel. We went, all four of us, last in 2010 during our move LEARNING 5 from Chicago to Baltimore. But five years is a long time in the life of kids, and we were excited to share our Jewish ancestral and modern UPCOMING homeland with our now school-age children. EVENTS 6* There are so many takeaways from our Pesach trip this year, but if there was one true overarching impression I had this time, it was CALENDARS 11 the numerous ways Israel is teeming with life. I was reminded just how “Jewish” Israel really is the last week of our visit. We had a few COMMUNITY minutes to spare between hiking to the splendid Banias Falls in the NEWS 14 Golan Heights and exploring the stunning mosaic floors of Tzipori, at one time seat of the Sanhedrin and the town in which Rabbi CONTRIBUTIONS 16 Yehuda HaNasi redacted the Mishnah in 200 C.E. So we swung by a FUND Kibbutz in the Upper Galilee – for two reasons. First, they produce DESIGNATION 19 superb cinnamon-infused honey and second (and more important) it’s called Kibbutz Shamir. Our son was delighted to pose for a photo *throughout bulletin in front of the sign bearing his name. What we didn’t show the kids on Kibbutz Shamir, however, was the memorial to Shoshana Galili, Judi Sinton, and Edna Mor, the last of whom was pregnant when she and the others were shot and killed by terrorists who infiltrated the Lebanon-Israel border on June 13, 1974. Edna was 28 years old. Shoshana was 58 and Judi, a volunteer from New Zealand, was 18. A written message from the attackers read: “We love to die, as you love to live.” The quote US reminds me of something ON Hassan Nasrallah, leader of Hezbollah said on facebook.com/ Al-Manar TV in May BethAmBaltimore of 2006: “Our nation’s continued on page 6 BETH AM BOARD OF TRUSTEES Rabbi Daniel Cotzin Burg Standing Committees Continuing Ed Chair Roberta Greenstein Officers Continuing Ed Co-Chair Rachel Rosenheck President Scott Zeger Finance Chair Alan Kopolow 1st Vice President Julie Gottlieb Finance Co-Chair Joe Wolfson 2nd Vice President Lynn Sassin House Chair Sam Polakoff Treasurer Alan Kopolow Kiddush Chair Meg Hyman Secretary Elaine Weiss Membership Chair Sharon Nathanson Membership Co-Chair Robin Katcoff Trustees through 2015 Religious Services Chair Joe Wolfson Lisa Akchin Social Action Chair Arthur Shulman Eliza Feller Social Action Co-Chair Jackie Donowitz Cheri Levin Youth Education Chair Dina Billian David Lunken Ad Hoc Committees Trustees through 2016 Annual Fund Honorary Chair Gil Sandler Neil Kahn Annual Fund Chair Ricky Fine Cindy Paradies Annual Fund Vice Chair Jim Jacobs Desiree Robinson Balt.
