The Spiritual Urgency of Inner by Rick Sarkisian, Ph.D. (Religious Life, Jan./Feb. 2018, http://religiouslife.com/all-documents/resources/87-jan-feb-2018-rl/file)

Inner peace. The single most important quality of one’s capacity to establish and maintain a close relationship with Christ in discover- ing and fulfilling His will and purpose in any job task. To claim and reclaim large amounts of inner peace is the first duty of a Christian, since the more peace within ourselves, the more we will reflect it to others, and, ultimately, the more there will be peace in one’s particu- lar community and in the world. More so, we will see with enhanced clarity God’s unfolding will and purpose for our lives each day. Building on the Foundation of Inner Peace Sometimes we get priorities arranged in the wrong order. For example, we focus on a par- ticular (often important) part of one’s or daily duties. While viewed as something good (and it is), we first must estab- lish within ourselves a great sense of peace. Always peace, since then we can build on other important parts of our life. At the deeply personal level, it is only from a foundation of interior peace that we can work on our faults, failings and fears with the help of God’s grace. God promises the free gift of peace: “My peace I give you, my peace I leave you” (Jn 14:27). Without inner peace, we are subject to being buffeted about by the turmoil of the present moment, often distracted by concerns about the future. Such concerns can swiftly be- come an attachment to outcomes, our expectations. I often think that expectations should be properly defined as “planned disappoint- ment,” since we are commonly found wanting when sets in and our expected outcome is a mismatch from what we projected. It is often said that the cause of all suffering is attachment. Our attachments often rob us of inner peace. Want proof? Attachments to the past are the seedbed for regrets, guilt and endless-loop ruminations about mistakes and wrong choices. Similarly, attachments to the future accelerate worry, anxiety and tension. All such attachments, whether fragile by a string or strongly held by a rope (St. John of the Cross) are emotional experiences that (a) take us out of the present moment and (b) rob us of inner peace. My friend Mike in Chicago told me about a nearby restaurant in his neighborhood that has a sign out front. It’s been there for several years and simply says “Free Food and Drinks Tomorrow.” Tomorrow never arrives. Repeat, tomorrow never arrives. All we have is the now and it is in the now, and only in the now, that we can experience God’s presence… a presence where His will, His purpose, His peace, is being unfolded page by page, minute by minute. Apprenticeship on the Path of Peace As we continue our apprenticeship on the path of peace, let us pray daily for God’s will, all as- pects of it… to find, follow and fulfill His will daily, obediently and faithfully. Within the heart of such a prayer, we must also be wary of a hidden attachment, however, such as the persistence of “Lord, show me your will for this relationship.” Or, “For this apostolic deci- sion.” Or, “For this health concern.” While intentions are good for such , we take the risk of being so fixated on one, and only one aspect of God’s will that we limit the flow of grace to a narrow, one lane freeway on the path of purpose. This is contrary to the simple act of praying for all aspects of God’s will, whatever they are and asking that His holy will be revealed in God’s perfect timing. While we that our intentions and desires and indeed, our human will converge with God’s will, in complete abandonment to Divine Provi- dence, God’s will be done. Not my will, Lord, but yours. While we want to know God’s will now, urgently, as soon as possible, God’s ways are not our ways, and we must patiently, some- times painfully and with great reluctance, seek the details of God’s plan in the place, sequence and circumstances that He alone will choose for us. I have a variety of post-it notes in my kitchen, what I call my “refrigerator wall of ,” and those that speak to my heart which contribute greatly to the presence of true interior peace are: • Let God lead. • Leave outcomes to Him. • Let life unfold naturally (i.e. su- pernaturally). • Remain open to the unexpected. Trusting in Divine Providence When we lose inner peace, we are placed in a position of seeing life differently, often in an agitated, anxious, more alarmed state. Yet, all the reasons for losing our inner peace are bad reasons. The main reason we lose our inner peace is the fear of the being without. Without something. A geographical location. A good relationship. An economic condition. Our health. The only way to address this fear, the only solution, is total (not partial) trust in God. I often pray: “Jesus, I trust in you. Help my lack of trust.” It is an act of trust in His Divine Providence, inspired by the title of Jean Pierre de Caussade’s spiritual classic, Abandonment to Divine Providence (Yes, abandonment, total surrender). St. John of the Cross tells us that “God gives in the measure we expect of him” and St. Francis de Sales joins with “the measure of Divine Providence acting on us is the degree of confidence we have in it.” So as this New Year begins, let us seek out interior peace, confidently. Hold it within our and reclaim more and more as God’s free flow of peace consumes your life. Remember, Our Lord promises to give us peace, but “not as the world gives” (Jn 14:27). Rather, He instructs, “Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid” (ibid). This must be the basis for a vibrant vocation, an inspired mission and a life of , holiness and harmony.

March 4, 2018 · Third Sunday of Lent The Miraculous Novena of Grace March 4—March 12 The Novena of Grace, which begins March 4th and ends on the 12th, the day of the canonization of St. Francis Xavier, owes its origin to the himself. At Naples, in Decem- ber, 1633, Father Marcello Mastrilli, S.J., was at the point of death. The Saint appeared to him and, bidding him renew a March 3 and 4, 2018 vow he had made to labor in Japan, said: “All those who Third Sunday of Lent implore my help daily for nine consecutive days, from the 4:00 Dummer Family (family) 4th to the 12th of March included, and worthily receive Patric O’Hanlon (wife Delores) the of Penance and the Holy Eucharist on 7:00 Joan Hawbaker (Peggy Attwood) one of the nine days, will experience my protection and 10:00 Stanley & Laura Ignatovich may hope with entire assurance to obtain from God any grace they ask for the good of their souls and the glory of (daughters Sandy & Sharon) God.” The Father arose, instantly cured.
