PIEHLER: And, I guess, I’d first like to ask you a very basic question: where were you born and when were you born? RAY HIGGINS: I was born at Woodbury, Tennessee, June 18, nineteen and twenty-one. PIEHLER: And your ... parents were married in Woodbury, Tennessee? HIGGINS: Yes, yes they were married in Woodbury. She was from McMinnville, and he’s from Woodbury. PIEHLER: Do you know how your parents met? HIGGINS: Uh, they were neighbors. Uh, this is where I ad lib a little bit and tell you a little more than answering the question. PIEHLER: Please do. HIGGINS: Okay. My mother lost her husband to appendicitis. His name was Jesse Moore. And she had three children. And she lived near ... my father, uh, who was married and lost his wife with four children. Well all, putting them together automatically they had seven children, you see. (Laughter) Well, the grandparents on both sides ... felt sorry for them, I think, having that many children. So the maternal grandfather took ... our mother’s oldest daughter and, for all practical purposes, reared her as their own. -

In Nashville, we endured devastating tornadoes, a pandemic, social unrest, and a downtown bombing on Christmas morning. Thankfully, through all this our NCN family remained safe and healthy. And despite the many unexpected challenges, 52 our portfolio companies have performed admirably and continue to execute their growth plans. 352 TENNESSEE BLUE BOOK A HISTORY OF TENNESSEE 353 SECTION VI Tennessee 354 TENNESSEE BLUE BOOK A HISTORY OF TENNESSEE 355 A HISTORY OF TENNESSEE The Land and Native People Tennessee’s great diversity in land, climate, rivers, and plant and animal life is mirrored by a rich and colorful past. For all but the last 200 years of the 12,000 years or so that this country has been inhabited, the story of Tennessee is the story of its native peoples. The fact that Tennessee and many of the places in it still carry Indian names serves as a lasting reminder of the significance of its native inhabit- ants. Since much of Tennessee’s appeal for her ancient people as well as for later pioneer settlers lay with the richness and beauty of the land, it seems fitting to begin by considering some of the state’s generous natural gifts. Tennessee divides naturally into three “grand divisions”—upland, often moun- tainous, East Tennessee, Middle Tennessee with its foothills and basin, and the low plain of West Tennessee. Travelers coming to the state from the east encounter first the lofty Unaka and Smoky Mountains, flanked on their western slope by the Great Valley of East Tennessee. Moving across the Valley floor, they next face the Cumberland Plateau, which historically attracted little settlement and presented a barrier to westward migration. West of the Plateau, one descends into the Cen- tral Basin of Middle Tennessee—a rolling, fertile countryside that drew hunters and settlers alike. The Central Basin is surrounded on all sides by the Highland Rim, the western ridge of which drops into the Tennessee River Valley. -

Historic Nashville, Inc. was originally chartered in 1968 as “The Historic Sites Federation of Tennessee.” In 1975, the name and mission changed in response to the urgency of threats to historic landmarks in Nashville. The nonprofit 501(c)3 organization became “Historic Nashville, Inc.” with the mission to “preserve and promote the historic places that make Nashville unique.” Over the years, HNI has successfully advocated for the preservation of many downtown landmarks, including the Ryman Auditorium, Union Station, Hermitage Hotel, Shelby Street Bridge, and the Second Avenue, Printer’s Alley, Lower Broadway, and East Nashville historic districts. In 1982, HNI established the state’s first Preservation Easement program and currently owns easements on 16 historic landmarks with a market value of nearly $50 million. HNI hosts an annual membership meeting, publishes a newsletter, maintains a website, gives special tours of local historic landmarks, launched the annual “Nashville Nine” endangered properties list in 2009, and maintains a revolving fund.
