Early in July, the eight clubs to gain licences were announced, and now each team has its first two marquee signings. It was pleasing to see our new Swisse VFL Women’s competition well represented in the initial announcements, with seven players selected to participate in the inaugural AFL women’s season for the four Melbourne-based clubs – Carlton, Collingwood, Melbourne and Western Bulldogs. Congratulations go to the seven players who have had their dream of playing football at the elite level come true – Ellie Blackburn, Katie Brennan, Brianna Davey, Melissa Hickey, Moana Hope, Daisy Pearce and Darcy Vescio. The journey for each player has been long and varied, but with the pathway now complete, these players will be role models for the next generation of female footballers. On the back of the marquee signings, interest in both the VFL Women’s and men’s competitions has never been greater as we countdown to finals. The VFL website in July recorded its most page views for a month with 1,176,740 - the third time this season the website has attracted over one million page views in a month. This is on top of the growth in the VFL Facebook site (@vflfooty) with 27,340 likes, Twitter (@VFL) with 18,335 followers and our AFL Victoria Instagram (@aflvictoria) account which recently ticked over to 10,000 followers. It is also pleasing to see all of our clubs so active on social media and online, which helps drive the promotion of the competition. While we would always welcome more mainstream media coverage, never forget the impact our own coverage of the competition creates. With Channel 7’s VFL coverage taking a break during the Olympics, we need to ensure our regular 53,000 TV viewers per week continue to have avenues to receive their weekly fix of Peter Jackson VFL action. Read Ebook {PDF EPUB} Elise and the Gold Gloop by S.B. Davies S.B. Davies. At the age of six, my daughter was a good reader for her age, but refused to start reading “proper books” with chapters and no pictures. She was bored with “Horrid Henry” and fairies saving a rainbow yet once more and insisted that she was old enough to read proper books, but every one she tried was “too difficult”. It wasn’t she couldn’t read them, it was the concepts and storylines; they were all designed for nine and ten year olds. There was another problem too. She wanted to read about girls, yet all the books about girls we could find were twee and dull. My daughter is happy to read about a princess, along as she is a Ninja Princess; happy to save rainbows, as long as it involves a good sword fight or perhaps a well-planned heist. After a few months of this, my lovely daughter stopped reading. We tried most of the “first chapter books” that people recommend; all met with disinterest. So I asked her exactly what she wanted in a “proper book”. After much though, she wrote down: “Dragons, princess, zombies, vampires, ghosts, but not spiders and it should be funny and scary and have fighting in it.” We couldn’t find such a book with concepts and vocabulary suitable for a six year old – so I wrote one. I had written novels before, but not a children’s book, so I had help from my daughter to find the right level.

TAC Cup Round 2 2 & 3 April 2016 $3.00 Season 2016 kicking into gear Wasn’t it great to have football back last weekend, both at AFL and TAC Cup level? While the next crop of future AFL talent was taking to the field in TAC Cup games throughout Victoria last weekend, it was a highlight of the Easter weekend to see eight draft ees debut in Round 1 of the AFL season – including 2015 Morrish Medal winner Clayton Oliver who claimed the first NAB AFL Rising Star nomination of the season aft er his 22-disposal debut for Melbourne. While the TAC Cup season started last weekend for the best U18 male talent across Victoria, last Monday saw the conclusion of a very successful Youth Girls Academy Challenge for the most promising U18 females across the state. Congratulations to the Dandenong Stingrays, who defeated the Sandringham Dragons in the finale to the month-long tournament. It is pleasing to see TAC support not only the next crop of elite U18 boys but also what will be the next crop of future female AFL footballers via the U18 Youth Girl Academies across eight regions. During the week we celebrated the launch of the Peter Jackson VFL and new VFL Women’s competition. With the launch of a national AFL women’s competition in 2017, it is exciting for AFL Victoria to launch the first VFL Women’s season this weekend. Also at the launch we looked back at the history of the TAC Cup competition, with last week signalling the beginning of its 25th season.

VFL Round 1 14 - 17 April 2017 $3.00 Photo: Cameron Grimes New VFL season begins Welcome to season 2017 in the Peter Jackson VFL. Plenty has happened since last September when Footscray was crowned premier. We have seen 13 VFL players provided with an AFL opportunity, selected in the 2016 NAB AFL national and rookie draft s. Casey and Geelong both produced three draft ees, with Coburg, Footscray and North Ballarat providing two draft ees each. The pleasing aspect has been seeing the likes of Tom Stewart, Mitch Hannan, Robbie Fox and Tim Smith debut in the early rounds of the AFL season. The competition this year will feature 14 clubs, with Frankston not provided a VFL licence for the 2017 season. The club has had a rich history of providing a pathway and opportunities for footballers in the region – none more evident than the debut for Sydney in recent weeks of 2014 Fothergill-Round Medal winner Nic Newman. However, it was decided at the end of last year that without the necessary off -field structures in place, AFL Victoria was not confident financial projections provided by the club could be met. We have a strong willingness to ensure there is a VFL presence in the region into the future, but it must be viable and sustainable both on and off the field in the long term. This has been highlighted in the regular communication AFL Victoria has had with the new board at the club. In other pre-season news, at the VFL Season Launch last week we revealed there will be a triple-header of matches for the 2017 Victorian state league Grand Final day at Etihad Stadium on Sunday September 24.

  • Jaz Garners Players' Attention
JAZ GARNERS PLAYERS’ ATTENTION Monday 20th April North Melbourne star Jasmine Garner’s transition to a midfielder has proven an overwhelming success, with the Kangaroo winning the AFLW Players’ Most Valuable Player Award, proudly presented by Our Watch, following an outstanding AFLW season. The 25-year-old was voted the clear winner by her peers with 413 votes, ahead of second-year Carlton youngster Madison Prespakis (227) and Collingwood’s Jaimee Lambert (201). Garner, an AFLW foundation player who kicked the competition’s first ever goal as a Magpie before crossing to North Melbourne after the 2018 season, spent the majority of AFLW4 as a midfielder after winning All Australian selection as a forward in 2019. The Yarraville product also complemented her midfield time by resting in the forward line, booting eight goals for the year, only two away from the competition’s leading goal-kicker. Garner, who was presented with her MVP trophy while isolating at her family home in Trentham, said she is humbled to receive the honour from her peers. “I’m truly proud to be recognised by the AFLW players’ as their MVP,” Garner said. “The AFLW competition has come so far in such a short space of time, all the players have put their heart and soul into performing, so for the cohort to value my contribution this highly is something I won’t forget.” A NORTH FORWARD TURNED AFLW COACH’S INSIGHT INTO HOW GARNER BECAME A VERSATILE WEAPON Garner, an All-Australian forward in 2019, is the first North Melbourne player to win the AFLPA MVP since Wayne Carey in 1998.
