Thanksgiving By: Alexis Harrison

Thanksgiving is right around the corner, and I couldn’t be more excited! This is the time of year when the leaves start to change their color and the weather gets colder. Everybody starts saying what they are thankful for in November, but why not be thankful everyday? I asked a few people what their favorite part of Thanksgiving is, and here are their responses. Morgan Shaw says, “My favorite part about Thanksgiving is being able to gather with family and eat a lot of pump- kin pie.” Jachaire Spring says, “I love getting to spend time with all of my family.” There are many things to be thankful for, so don’t forget to count your blessings at all times of the year! The New Carpet in the Library By: Brooke Beason

Many of you may have gone into the library lately and found our lovely librarian, Mrs. Jones, boxing up a ton of books. You may be wanting to ask the following questions: Why are you boxing up books? Are those new books? Are those old books? Are you throwing those books away? Where are those books going? Are you sure we need new carpet? Are you sure you need to move the book cases out? I think the blue carpet is fine. Mrs. Jones has had these questions asked so frequently that I decided to answer all of the questions your little heart may have about the books in the boxes and new carpet we are getting. Obviously, you have gathered that the books are in boxes for new carpet to go in. They are not new books. They are the ones that have been on the shelves the whole time. She is not throwing them away. They will be put into different places until the carpet is replaced. Yes, we do need new carpet because we have had the blue carpet since the building was built and there were holes in the carpet that were a danger. Stay tuned and check out the new library carpet coming at you after Thanksgiving break!

Top Tips for a Job Interview By: Keelie Glory

Follow these tips and you will surely get the job! • Wear traditional colors. Blue and gray are the right colors. Don’t wear bright colors. That makes the interviewer more focused on the colors rather than focused on you. • Make good eye contact. It makes the interviewer let you know that you are listening. • Stand up straight or sit up straight if you are sitting down. Don’t use the back of the chair that will force you to sit up straight. • Answer the questions they ask fully. • Shake the hand of the interviewer. • Make sure you dress appropriately • Show up about 5 minutes before the interview

Black Friday Shopping: Good or Bad? By: Abby Smith

Black Friday falls on the Friday after Thanksgiving. Many people, including myself are very excited for this sale. It is a great time to stock up on Christmas presents for your friends and family. But Black Friday can get very chaotic. Some people will do whatever it takes to get the item they stood in line for hours to get, even if that means injuring someone in the process There have been people who have lost their lives due to the rushing, chaotic crowds on Black Friday. Although this sale is a very good and exciting day, no item is worth losing your life or risking another no matter how low the price of the item is. Black Friday to me, falls on an odd time, the day after Thanksgiving. We spend Thanksgiving being thankful for our friends, family and everything we have, but the next day, Black Friday comes around, and we are rushing to stand in line for hours to get more items and take advantages of all the deals. This howev- er is not all entirely a bad thing. It can, however, become a bad thing if you spend more time thinking about what items and deals you can get as opposed to spending time with your family and enjoying the holidays. So in my opinion, Black Friday can be both good or bad, depending on what you make of it.

Why Did the Chicken Cross the Road? By Sierra Perdue

When we were growing up, one of the biggest unanswered questions was why did the chicken cross the road? Naturally, the answer to the question was always “to get to the other side,” but what did the chicken do when it got to the other side? What is the real reason that the chicken crossed the road? Was he going to his favorite restaurant, or was he going to see his girlfriend? Was he going to the doctor to see if he could get chicken pox, or was he going to the daycare to pick up his children? Is the chicken even a boy, or is it actually a girl? This is the most mysterious chicken in the history of chickens. The possibilities of what the chicken was crossing the road for are literally endless. Who saw the chicken cross the road, and why didn’t they tell us what it did when it got to the other side? The world may never know. There will be a box in the library, so that you can answer why the chicken crossed the road. The answers will be in the next issue.

Change By: Sydnee Haynes

When some people think of change, it stresses them out. If they are someone who wants the change, they are usually pretty happy about it. But if they don’t want the change, and it happens it might stress them out. When it comes to change, I feel like you have to have an open mind about it. You have to be willing to give the change a chance. I mean think of how you would feel if you went to a new job and re- placed someone that the company’s co-workers loved. They might be upset about it for a bit, but you would want them to give you a chance. So the next time change happens in your life give it a chance.

What Would You Do? By: Saylor Clark

It’s kinda weird when you’re put in a situation to tell someone that they have a smiley face sticker on their bottom. I mean you don’t want them to embarrass themselves in front of a group of people. Right? What if it were you, and you had something in your teeth? Would you want your friend to tell you? I know I wouldn’t want to walk around with something in my teeth or a smiley face sticker on my bottom. I wouldn’t to look like a fool. What if your friend had toilet paper on their foot? Would you laugh so hard that you cried or would you tell them so they don’t embarrass themselves. Maybe you would do both because you think “ How in the world did that happen?”

It will be $2.00 for students and $3:00 for adults, so we would like for y’all to come out and watch our concert. Most Importantly, I want to thank Mrs. Schmidt for all her hard work!! Traveling By: Alexis Harrison

Who wants to travel to another country whenever they get older? I know I do. I have always wanted to travel to Paris, France. The Eiffel Tower has always been something that I would like to see. Brooke Beason says, “I would love to go to Israel to see all of the history and everything there.” Madison LeFlore says, “I would like to go to France because I would like to see the Eiffel Tower.” Maverick Sullivan says, “I want to travel to Asia because I think that it would be a fun place to go.” I believe traveling to another country would be a once in a lifetime experience. You can learn a new language, make friends, and expand your knowledge about that country. Getting out of your comfort zone isn’t always a bad thing. You are going to be uncomfortable at first, but the memories and adventures are going to be worth it!

Polyester By: Jaden Jones

Polyester was invented back in 1941 by two British scientist named John Whinfield and James Dickson. As with all fibers, polyester has some properties that are not desirable. While resistant to water-born stains, polyester is an oil scavenger. Due to its strength, polyester, particularly when cut into short staple lengths, does form pills. Polyester will burn with a strong odor and the molten residue can cause severe burns to the skin. Because poly- ester has low absorbency, it can become uncomfortable in hot weather. This problem has been addressed by making polyester fibers with multilobal cross sections (as opposed to round ones). Since the multilobal fibers cannot pack together as tightly as round ones, perspiration can be wicked (carried on the surface of the fibers) away from the body, thereby improving the wearer's comfort.

Ten Ways to Irritate People By Sierra Perdue

If you are like me, you get irritated very easily. The littlest things drive me insane, like the way people say things, or the sounds that some people make. I almost have a mental breakdown from how irritated I get at people. Hopefully, you can relate to the things that irritate me the most.

1. It irritates the life out of me when somebody says ¨libary¨ instead of ¨library.¨ The correct way to say it, is the way that it is spelled, you can’t just take a letter out of the pronunciation.

2. When people smack when they eat. YOUR MOUTH IS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE OPEN WHEN YOU EAT. Like were you not taught manners when you were little? When I am trying to eat, I do not want to see your al- ready chewed food. It is so disgusting.

3. When people grind their teeth. For one, why would you want to rub your teeth together? That is one of the worst feelings in the world, and not to mention, the sound of it is torture to everybody’s ears.

4. When people disrespect teachers just because they do not want to do their work or they don’t want to listen to what the teacher is trying to tell them. When I see somebody disrespect a teacher, it makes me mad. They do not have to sit there and take it but they do. They are people of authority in the school and do not deserve to be disrespected.

5.When the person driving in front of you leaves their blinker on for what seems like seven miles. Where are you gonna turn? Did you just accidentally leave it on or did you wanna give me ten minutes worth of warning so I didn’t accidentally rear end you?

6. When people scrape their fork against their teeth or against their glass plate when they are eating. I honestly believe that this is the sound that you hear when you enter Hell.

7. When other people touch you with their feet. Why are you touching me with your feet? I have no clue what kind of funguses that you have on your feet. And if you do have funguses, I do not want them.

8. When people talk really loud when it is supposed to be quiet. Like in class, when it’s just a reading day and the whole class is silent and then you have the two people who are yelling like they are two miles apart when they are actually right beside each other.

9. Screaming children. I cannot tell you how many times there has been a screaming child at my job. Not a ba- by. A child that knows better and their parent didn’t get them what they wanted. I just want to tell the parent to shut their child up.

10. When people drive SLOW in the FAST lane. It is called the fast lane for a reason. If you are going to go un- der the speed limit, just simply put on your blinker, and move into the slow lane.

“I think that nature Is beautiful .The way the ground bends and the sky curves and trees shape the fields. It’s all natural, and it creates its own ways of beauty. Their beauty is so ghastly. Whether high or low, there is grass, flowers, snow, rain, everything someone would find beautiful in a different way. The clear sky, the clear or covered ground cre- ates a scene made for the best. Only certain people can appreciate the beauty and cre- ativity and highs and lows of what we call...Nature.” Shaina Durham

“Nature is a beautiful thing. Although people litter in it every day . Nature provides many things for survival . The way it looks is beautiful, the way the sky is in the morning and how it looks at night. The way the trees look in the winter and fall is truly relaxing. Na- ture will continue to be beautiful as long as we stop littering.” Skylan Taylor Interview with Mr. Greenwood By: Jayden Potter

Band By: Madison LeFlore and Sierra Mahar

Interview with Mrs. Amy Cumpton, Spiro Schools Band director

Question 1: How are you feeling about football season ending? Football season ending doesn't affect the band. We have been working towards the upcoming Christmas Concerts and the Spring semester events since Sep- tember. We perform and compete all year long. We don't stop until school lets out for the summer. The fall semester competitions are marching related, which are what you see at half-time of football games and parades, like the Leflore County Veterans Parade and Spiro's Christmas Parade. This year, we have an exciting opportunity to combine forces with the bands from Muldrow and Roland for the Fort Smith Christmas Parade. The three bands will march together and perform as the Eastern Oklahoma All Star Band for the event. It will give our students (and theirs) the opportunity to be a part of a 120+ piece marching band, which is uncommon for smaller schools such as ours. The spring semester competitions are indoor events such as, instrumental solos and chamber ensembles, Concert, and Jazz Band Competitions.

Question 2: Are you ready for winterguard? Do you think the guard is ready for basketball season? How well do you think they will do? Not sure if winterguard will happen this year or not. Budget cuts have taken a hard hit on our overall program. If we don't have the funds available to pay for an instructor, we will not be able to have a winter guard group. If the funds are available, then we will have winterguard. Then it depends on the students as to "how well they perform." If the students desire to have a good performance, they will put their 'all' into the practices and performances to make it happen. Only time will tell.

Question 3: How do you feel about the band so far this year? Have they accomplished anything in football sea- son? The band as a whole is doing as well as expected this time of year. It usually takes 1-2 months to "reign them in" after summer vacation on playability and musicianship. The marching season always takes a toll on overall musi- cianship, that being said, I'm glad that our rehearsal schedule allows us to play more than march, this early in the year. Our jazz band is playing strong right now, and we'll have a great Christmas concert in December. The Concert band is also playing well, considering it's predominately comprised of underclassmen. We are blessed with some extremely talented wind players this year that possess great leadership skills, too. Those two characteristics com- bined are what will keep our bands moving forward in a positive direction. Also, we had 11-students recently audition for the Eastern Oklahoma district honor band; of those 11- students, 8-students earned a place among the best in our district. They will participating in the district honor band clinic this coming January. Since Spiro is one of the smaller schools in the district, I'm extremely proud of our 8- students that made the final cut. Those students are: Senior, Katrina McClain-trumpet; Junior, Jade Cossey- clarinet; Sophomore, Kayle Henry-clarinet; Freshman, Skylan Taylor-clarinet; Freshmen, Braeden Spears- percussion; 8th grader, Jeni Smith-clarinet; 8th grader, Leticia Martinez-flute; and 8th grader, Shianne Wegner- flute. So yes, during the busy and always hectic football season, we did accomplish a lot. Our marching band had a great competition season and our students that worked diligently on their audition music achieved their individual goals of making it into the honor band for our area. Not only do we endure the demands of Friday performances at pep rallies, run-throughs, and games, we also persevere and prevail on Saturday marching band competitions and honor band auditions. Knowing that our band students are able to "juggle more than one thing in life" says a lot for their individual drive, self-motivation, and ability. All great traits that make our band what it is "The Pride of Eastern Oklahoma".

“Get On Your Feet” song lyrics By Gloria Estefan Released in 1989

You say I know it's a waste of time There's no use trying So scared that life's gonna pass you by Your spirit dying Not long ago I could feel your strength and your devotion What was so clear, is now overcast With mixed emotions Deep in your heart is the answer Find it, I know it will pull you through

Get on your feet Get up and make it happen Get on your feet Stand up and take some action

I think it's true that we've all been through Jazz band with Mrs. Cumpton directing. Some nasty weather Let's understand that we're here To handle things together You gotta keep looking onto tomorrow There's so much in life That's meant for you

Get on your feet Get up and make it happen Get on your feet Stand up and take some action Get on your feet Don't stop before it's over Get on your feet The weight is off your shoulder

Get up and make it happen Stand up, stand up, stand up and take some action Gotta get on your feet, yeah, yeah Jazz band doing what they do best! Don't stop before it's over Get on your feet The weight is off your shoulder Get on your feet Get up, get up, get up and make it happen Get on your feet Stand up, stand up and take some action Get on your feet Get up, stand up Don't stop before it's over You got to get on your feet yeah yeah The weight is off your shoulder
