Hello, we are back again. I do hope you all had a good summer; I certainly enjoyed mine. First I must thank Barbara Brooker for the lovely poppy picture she sent in for me to use on the front cover this month. As I've mentioned before, I am always very pleased to receive pictures from you. If I don‟t use them immediately I keep them on file for the appropriate time. I am awaiting news of Sunflowers you have grown this year. There will again be a prize for the tallest one grown, and a special award for one grown by anyone up to the age of 12. Finally, don‟t forget that when you use one of the advertisers in this magazine please mention that you found them in Rural Roundup. Regards, Ed

Kingsdown is rich in its artistic talent and it is hoped that this exhibition will enable their work to be appreciated. Dear Friends, Love them or hate them, it has been impossible to gnore the Olympics. I must admit, I didn‟t really get on board as the torch was making its way around the country, but when the games started, I was hooked. I wanted to know how the athletes were performing, and couldn‟t help but admire their determination, their stoicism and their faith. They had trained and prepared their bodies and minds as well as they could, without any promise of a medal at the end of the games. The athletes punish their bodies to run a gruelling marathon race, to row, swim or run thousands of metres or to compete in one of the many other events. They have the discipline to get out of bed at 4.00 or 5.00am to get into the swimming pool and swim hundreds of lengths or run around a track before going to work or school for a full day‟s work, only to return to the pool or track in the evening, and to repeat this process day after day after day. They run their races with perseverance. Living a life of faith is rather like training for the Olympics, and it is equally difficult, but great prizes also await those who persevere. In this race however, no one loses. If you finish, you get the reward, you don‟t have to win a gold, silver or bronze medal for God to know and applaud everyone who crosses the finishing line. In the book of Hebrews, we are told that: “Faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.” (11:1) and the reading goes on to list just some of the actions that faithful people have undertaken. The chapter then finishes with: “These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised. God had planned something better for us so that only together with us would they be made perfect”. (Heb 11:39-40). We don‟t have to come first or win medals for God to give us the prize, because we have already been given the prize, even if we don‟t recognise it as such. And the prize? God gave his Son, Jesus Christ, that we might live. So often it‟s the things that we don‟t do that we regret, only to find it‟s suddenly too late to do anything about it. Just like the athletes, as people of faith, we are encouraged to “run with perseverance the race marked out for us.” So let us take action now and begin training for a life of faith and if you aren‟t sure about where to start, how about starting with the following prayer: “Help me, Lord, to do now what I will wish I had done when I come to the end of the way.” Yours in Christ, Cathy 7 Bringing the Bakery to you! You helped towards Kingsdown's great total collection of £735.47p, which was about £100 more than last year, and will be a significant contribution to the Charity's work in helping the most poor and deprived. Sincere thanks must also go to that stalwart band of 13 collectors who gave willingly of their time to deliver and then collect the envelopes. Between them they collected in 19 of Kingsdown's 32 roads - quite an achievement! Perhaps Kingsdown can raise even more next year! Alan Smith 9 tel: 01304 367 955 mobile: 07974 763 121

There was no ordinary meeting of the Parish Council in August but in July Councillors agreed to undertake a refurbishment of Nelson‟s seat in Ring- would, which has suffered the vagaries of time and had recently collapsed. It is hoped this work will be done before the end of the summer. In addition the Parish Council awarded a grant to Kingsdown Conserva- tion Trust to assist in the purchase of Kingsdown Field in Victoria Road which was completed at the end of June. Earlier in the year some Councillors attended a training session on Neighbourhood Plans, and have now responded to an invite from Parish Council which is organising a meeting of local parishes to discuss neighbourhood planning and share thoughts and ideas. It is anticipated that this meeting will take place in September. St Margaret‟s Parish Council will be providing with a copy of their draft neighbourhood plan which is now out for consultation. You may look at this plan by visiting http://www.stmargaretspc.co.uk During August KCC Kent Highways confirmed that, following on from a meeting with the Parish Council earlier in the year, a revised traffic manage- ment scheme for Kingsdown has now been completed. Kent Highways will be undertaking some formal statutory consultations with numerous organisations. The Parish Council will be considering the final scheme at the September meeting and it will also be posted onto the noticeboard at Kingsdown. The next meeting of the Parish Council is on Monday 10th September, at Learning Opportunities School Hall, Ringwould. This meeting will commence at 7pm starting with the public participation session to allow discussion of the traffic management proposals. Our speaker for our July meeting was one of our members, Jennifer Van Lens, who gave us a fascinating insight into NATO Headquarters, Brussels, where she worked for many years. Her talk gave us both sides of working overseas for such an organisation. She explained that Article 5 states that when one country is attacked all are attacked and NATO‟s aim is to avoid wars. Whilst Jennifer was with NATO three spies were uncovered working there. Two of them were a married couple who had socialised widely with members of staff. On the lighter side, Jennifer recounted amusing anecdotes of how when speaking in a foreign language, one can use words that have a completely different meaning from that intended. We do not have a meeting in August but please join us at Kingsdown Village Hall on Monday 10th September at 2pm when Tsuyoko Page will demonstrate the art of Origami. 16 I am writing this on the last day of the Olympics, and didn't we do well! So many gold medals – unbelievable and a wonderful achievement for Team GB. But gold medals would not be given out to my garden this year. It has been a disaster – the runner beans have been sown three times and are just beginning to produce my favourite vegetable. The leeks are on the verge of bolting and the carrots and beetroot are minute. Being away for a month didn't help in June. But please never believe one's husband that the garden is looking wonderful. I took out twenty-one bags of rubbish during the first week home and there are still areas that need tackling. But the weather has also played a big part. I really thought I was going to start to quack until I went to Devon on a flying visit where it rained solidly for four days. Let us hope for an Indian Summer. The Village Show on Sunday 2nd September will have taken place by the time you read the Rural Roundup and the committee would like to thank all of you in advance who took part in this annual event. The next meeting is on Monday 24th September when Neil Arnold will talk about Investigating Strange Creatures in our Woods and Gardens and the committee looks forward to seeing you all again after the summer break. We meet as usual in the School Hall on Glen Road at 7.15pm for 7.45pm. Susan Martin - Chairman

The Church of St. Mary the Virgin, Ripple The Summer Tea was held at Fairmead, Ripple on Saturday, 14th July. In spite of torrential rain, a happy afternoon was spent indoors and a total of £194 was raised for church funds. Bert Hopper, a member of the PCC died on 16th July. Bert was an active member of the PCC and will be sadly missed in church activities. A well attended Fifth Sunday United Benefice service was held in Ripple on 29th July. Fine weather allowed outdoor socialising after the service. Future events include a Harvest Supper in the Village Hall at 7.00pm on Saturday, 6th October. Please book with Rosemary Davey on 374 512. Al(Bert) Hopper..... It is said that a man should be judged on what he does and not on what he says. If this is so, then a judgement of Bert, who died suddenly on 16th July, recognises much for him to be remembered by. Bert‟s life, particularly the long time he lived in Ripple, was described at his funeral by his son Alan. From the village, we can add some of the very important local detail. Bert was a member of the Parochial Church Council, a Trustee of Ripple Village Hall and a regular attender at Tea and Chat in Ripple. More importantly, when there were things to be done, Bert was one of the first to be there to do them. In the Open Day, „Ripple in Retrospect,‟ held a few years ago, Bert was an invaluable source of information for answering questions on life in Ripple over the past 50 years or so. He was always pleased to share his knowledge and experience of village life. 20 Letters PCSO Garry Faulkner After three years PCSO Lisa White has been replaced for the villages of Kingsdown and Ringwould by PCSO Garry Faulkner . PCSO White worked tire- lessly especially in the area of Queens Rise in Ringwould. PCSO White dealt with issues such as anti-social behaviour, neighbourhood disputes and off-road bikes. Due to PCSO White‟s hard work crime has fallen along with anti-social behaviour issues. PCSO Gary Faulkner has recently taken over from PCSO White and has been a police community support officer working in Middle Deal for five and a half years. He has a good understanding of issues that concern the community and works closely with other agencies to help resolve any prob- lems that may occur. PCSO Faulkner has a police surgery in Kingsdown village hall and soon will be using Ringwould village hall when this can be arranged. PCSO Faulkner is keen to hear from any residents who may have issues or any concerns in the area. PCSO Faulkner can be contacted by phoning 101 the new non-emergency number or e-mailed on [email protected]

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * A Memorial for Squadron Leader Downing On the 23rd of December Squadron Leader Anthony Downing passed away at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham as a result of injuries he had received in Afghanistan. Raised in Kingsdown Anthony now lies in the churchyard of our village; many will remem- ber the extraordinary number of people that attended his funeral and the flypast as a mark of respect by a Hercules aircraft of the Royal Air Force. I did not know Anthony but stood with many others that day to pay my respects and show my gratitude to this young man who had made the ultimate sacrifice in the service our country. To mark Anthony‟s passing Kingsdown Conservation Group have agreed to plant a Holm Oak in the village in his memory. It is believed the cost will be about £400 with a plaque. Therefore donations are invited to support the cost of this memorial and they should be sent to either Philip Evemy at the Gate house, Upper Street, Kingsdown, CT14 8EU or in the Kingsdown Conservation Group box in the Post Office. Cheques should be made out to Kingsdown Conservation Group, care of Chris Price. Amongst the many who have fallen on active service in Afghanistan Squadron Leader Downing was clearly an exceptional officer and I would commend you to read his obituary on the Ministry of Defence web site: http://www.mod.uk/DefenceInternet/DefenceNews/MilitaryOperations/ SquadronLeaderAnthonyDowningDiesOfWoundsSustainedInAfghanistan.htm. 26 Kingsdown Conservation Group

The recent sunshine and showers have done wonders for plant life in the gardens and hedgerows around our village, but there is an ominous silence. When out dog-walking, I have not seen a single butterfly, and the buddleia - heavy with blossom in my garden - remains unvisited. The lavender bushes used to teem with bees but now there is no continuous hum of busyness; Rimsky-Korsakov would not have been inspired to compose „The flight of the bumble bee‟ this summer. However, I hope that a lecture by Patrick Murfet entitled The Wondrous World of Bees will enlighten us as to why we have such a dearth of this fascinating insect. The lecture has been arranged by KCG and will take place on Thursday,13th September at Kingsdown Primary School, at 7.00 for 7.30 pm. Non-members are very welcome and the committee hope that by coming to this lecture many more will be encouraged to join as a full member and participate in the many activities, outings and lectures that are organised by the Group. For more details about the talk – and to reserve your place – contact Tan Harrington at [email protected] or on 380 510. One of the most exciting events arranged recently was a fashion show and sale in collaboration with the Out of Xile fashion designer. This raised the magnificent amount of over £2,000 which was shared between the NSPCC and KCG. The models were members from the Group who thoroughly enjoyed their day of celebrity on the catwalk. It has been suggested that it would be nice to plant bulbs, probably daffodils, in open spaces around the village. First of all, such sites need to be identified as being suitable for such a scheme, so if you have any suggestions, please contact the Group, who are prepared to fund this work. The Group‟s AGM was held at the school on Tuesday, 17th July. Sadly, out of a membership of 250 only 25 attended the meeting. In his report, the Chairman eloquently urged members to put themselves forward to help with some of the work involved. Without more manpower, the Kingsdown Conservation Group may not survive and although there have been a few carping comments from some not involved in the work, what has been achieved so far has been of enormous benefit to the village especially in the matter of local planning. Therefore, if you wish the village to remain as an attractive vibrant community, please give your support and expertise to the Group so the good work may continue. 30 Cars are an expensive but essential part of daily life. However it‟s almost always possible to reduce mileage and costs. Plan your journey – use satellite navigation and take the shortest

route.

Is your journey necessary? Consider the alternatives - shop local

or try online shopping.

Could you take public transport? Could you walk or cycle? Could you share a lift ?

When car use is required adjust your driving style. To reduce fuel consumption:- 1. Drive smoothly • Avoid unnecessary braking and acceleration by anticipating situations and being aware of other road users. • Maintain a greater distance from the vehicle in front so that you can regulate your speed without using the brakes. 2. Accelerator • When slowing down or driving downhill, remain in gear but take your foot off the accelerator. In most situations and for most vehicles this will activate the fuel cut-off switch, reducing fuel flow to virtually zero. 3. Gears • When accelerating shift to a higher gear early, usually by around 2,000 - 2,500 RPM • Skip gears e.g. 3rd to 5th or 4th to 6th when appropriate. 4. Speed • Stay within the law, stay safe and reduce your speed. 5. Tyres • Ensure tyres are the correct pressure. Under-inflated are dangerous and cause the engine to work harder, thus increasing fuel consumption. 6. Air conditioning • Choose the ‘eco’ setting and use air conditioning sparingly. 7. Turn off • Turn off your engine if you expect to be stationary for more than a min- ute or so. 8. Drag • Remove racks, roof boxes and bike carriers as they increase air resis- tance. • Keep windows shut at high speed. 9. Weight • Avoid carrying unnecessary items that add to the weight of a vehicle.

32 Kingsdown Pre-School is having a ball (again!) Following the huge success of last year‟s 35th Anniversary Spring Ball, the organisers from Kingsdown Pre-School are back to invite you to a Halloween Masquerade Ball on Saturday 27th Octo- ber. Like last year, the ball will be held at Walmer & Kingsdown Golf Club and features a live band – The Vintage Corporation, a local nine piece 60‟s and 70‟s function band. The black tie event starts at 7pm, with a three-course meal with wine, to be served from 7:30pm. Everyone was having such a good time last year that they didn‟t want the evening to end, so this year the ball has been extended until 1am. Tickets priced at a suggested donation of £35 are on sale now from Lisa Dennison on 239 704. There has already been a lot of interest and we‟re expecting tickets to go fast, so get your orders in quickly! Proceeds from the event will go towards outdoor play and gardening equipment to take advantage of our fabulous new forecourt.

Kingsdown Pre-School warmly invites you to attend the grand opening of their new safe play surface Monday 10th September 2012, 1pm – 2.30pm (ribbon cutting ceremony 1.30pm) Refreshments available
