A special thank you to our team of writers: GRAB YOUR COPY Chris Connolly Stephen Doyle Karl Hedley Dean Kilbryde Matthew Kirby Graeme Lafferty Rory Paddock ADRIEN DU PONT (4yo) Trainer: Paul Nicholls Despite winning four of his five starts this horse seems to have been handled with kid gloves by trainer Paul Nicholls. Rather than going to Cheltenham or Aintree he went to Ascot where he won a juvenile handicap hurdle by six lengths and looked impressive doing so. The fact that the trainer hasn’t been quick to rush him probably indicates that connections feel he has a very promising future and as such he is definitely worth noting. AGRAPART (5yo) Trainer: Nick Williams This French bred five year old relishes softer conditions, so keep an eye out for his entries on heavy ground. He showed a touch of class when winning last seasons Betfair Hurdle by eleven lengths and as top class horses such as Zarkandar and My Tent Or Yours have won recent renewals this could follow in their footsteps. ALOOMOMO (6yo) Trainer: Warren Greatrex Since moving to these shores Warren Greatrex appears to have found the key to him. Progressing up the chasing ranks last year he ended the season with a sixth in the Close Brothers Novices’ Handicap Chase at the Cheltenham Festival. Well handicapped when completing his hat trick at Newbury, he hinted at having the ability to be close to the top bracket. Once more you’d expect him to improve this season as he continues to strengthen. ALTIOR (6yo) Trainer: Nicky Henderson The Supreme Novice Hurdle hero from the 2016 Cheltenham Festival is now likely to avoid taking on the crack two mile hurdlers this term and will be sent over the larger obstacles instead. An exciting, tough and likeable sort who’s long term target at this stage appears to be the Arkle. DONATE HERE ASPEN COLORADO (4yo) Trainer: Joseph O’Brien A youngster with a bright future having made it three wins from four starts on his seasonal reappearance at Listowel. Friendless in the betting that day he defied the negatives to see off Sanibel Island by just under a length on what was his hurdling debut. The front pair pulled some seven lengths clear of the well touted Golden Poet and he is likely to improve further as the season progresses. His only disappointment last season came when there was “good” mentioned in the going description. There ought to be plenty left to work on for Joseph O’Brien who will be hoping for big things from his dual Leopardstown winner in what is his first full year as a licensed trainer. AUX PTITS SOINS (6yo) Trainer: Paul Nicholls A horse that seems to have been around for ages but still has only two British starts to his name. Paul Nicholls' six year old gelding became a huge talking horse back in March 2015, winning the Coral Cup on his debut for the yard. His subsequent start was over a year later, again at Cheltenham, this time finishing fifth in the World Hurdle. Although there is certainly no shame in that performance, it seems clear connections think him capable of much better. If avoiding injury this year we may well see him fulfil his undoubted potential. BATTLEFORD (5yo) Trainer: Willie Mullins A second in both the Cheltenham and Aintree champion bumper races last year looks very encouraging for his foray into hurdling. Representing the top yard of Willie Mullins there’s no doubt that this Graham Wylie owned five year old is set to do well as a novice hurdler, especially when the mud is flying. CLICK HERE BETAMECHE (5yo) Trainer: Dan Skelton A runaway winner on debut for Nicky Richards in a bumper at Newcastle. Betameche then joined the Dan Skelton yard and marked his arrival with an impressive success at Wetherby to make it two from two. Multiple winners have come from the two races he won so the form looks strong for this exciting prospect. It will be interesting to follow his progress although he is only proven on testing ground which could be the key to him. BLOODY MARY (5yo) Trainer: Nicky Henderson Third to Willie Mullins top prospect Limini at Cheltenham in what was only her third start over hurdles, this five year old had previously done it well enough on her British debut at Taunton. She won on numerous occasions in her native France so expect her to pose a threat to all now tackling handicap hurdles. Reports suggesting she has trained on well over the summer only further boost encouragement to follow her in the season ahead. BUVEUR D’AIR (5yo) Trainer: Nicky Henderson This horse was somewhat left in the shadow of Altior last term, but three wins from four starts and a solid third behind his stable mate was enough to convince JP McManus to purchase him in a private sale. The victory over the highly fancied Limini in the Top Novices’ Hurdle at Aintree perhaps the clinching factor but that only enhanced what was some already strong form in the book. The horse does look to be crying out for the step up to 2m4f, but it is still unclear whether connections will stick to hurdles or take on a hot looking novice chasing scene this season. Either way they have an exciting prospect on their hands who will definitely be winning races again this season. CAPELAND (4yo) Trainer: Paul Nicholls The unbeaten gelding has shown a liking for heavy going with two victories from two starts under those conditions. A winner in France back in 2015 he subsequently followed that with a victory at Cheltenham in a listed race, on debut for Paul Nicholls. The race at Cheltenham was a listed contest so clearly connections think highly of him. A lightly raced runner with hatfuls of potential. CAPITAINE (4yo) Trainer: Paul Nicholls After finishing second on his race course debut he shook off his maiden tag at Wincanton when dominating his rivals to win by thirteen lengths. Being trained at Ditcheat by Champion trainer Paul Nicholls is certainly no disadvantage and the yard certainly know a talent when they get one. Winning a novice hurdle should be a formality and it will be interesting to see where this French bred gelding goes this season. CONEYGREE (9yo) Trainer: Mark Bradstock The 2015 Cheltenham Gold Cup hero is back better than ever according to his trainer after missing the entirety of last season with injury. If that is even close to being true then the rest of his rivals should stand up and take notice. To see the former Gold Cup winner coming back to take on the likes of Don Cossack and Cue Card is a mouthwatering prospect. Expect him to start off with the Charlie Hall at the end of October. CRUISEAWEIGH (5yo) Trainer: Tom George We’ve only seen this son of Oscar once on the track when finishing second in a Wincanton bumper. He is likely to be seen tackling staying hurdles before pootentially tackling a novice chase towards the end of his campaign. CYRIUS MORIVIERE (6yo) Trainer: Ben Pauling Ben Pauling looks a trainer going places and in Cyrius Moriviere he has a talented, front running hurdler whose season culminated in a nineteen length victory at Doncaster in January 2016. Raced five times in all last season he won twice and placed once and although pulled up in his other two outings he had excuses on both occasions. On decent ground at a trip of around two miles he looks to be an exciting hurdler. DE PLOTTING SHED (6yo) Trainer: Gordon Elliott A horse that has taken a bit of time to come to hand but has shown glimpses of ability. An imposing type he recently claimed victory at Navan where he showed there could still be plenty more to come. This son of Beneficial handles all types of ground so there will be no problems during the depths of winter. DIFFERENT GRAVEY (6yo) Trainer: Nicky Henderson Resumed his progression by picking up victory at Ascot on his seasonal debut when demolishing his rivals by around sixteen lengths. He missed Cheltenham but did run at Aintree where he was upped to three miles for the first time. Ultimately he was no match for tough and proven staying hurdlers such as Thistlecrack and Shaneshill so it wouldn’t be the biggest of shocks to see him go novice chasing this year. Dropped back down to middle distances should also help his cause and the master of Seven Barrows is likely to have some lofty targets set aside for this individual. DRUMACOO (7yo) Trainer: Ben Pauling Won on his final three starts for Michael Hourigan before switching to the yard of Ben Pauling. He returned from over a year off to start his chase career with a thirty-eight length demolition of his rivals at Huntingdon. Unable to back that victory up at Ascot a month later however the suspicion was the race came too soon after such a long layoff.
