Hill Walking & Mountaineering in Snowdonia Introduction The craggy heights of Snowdonia are justly regarded as the finest mountain range south of the Scottish Highlands. There is a different appeal to Snowdonia than, within the picturesque hills of, say, Cumbria, where cosy woodland seems to nestle in every valley and each hillside seems neatly manicured. Snowdonia’s hillsides are often rock strewn with deep rugged cwms biting into the flank of virtually every mountainside, sometimes converging from two directions to form soaring ridges which lead to lofty peaks. The proximity of the sea ensures that a fine day affords wonderful views, equally divided between the ever- changing seas and the serried ranks of mountains fading away into the distance. Eryri is the correct Welsh version of the area the English call Snowdonia; Yr Wyddfa is similarly the correct name for the summit of Snowdon, although Snowdon is often used to demarcate the whole massif around the summit. The mountains of Snowdonia stretch nearly fifty miles from the northern heights of the Carneddau, looming darkly over Conwy Bay, to the southern fringes of the Cadair Idris massif, overlooking the tranquil estuary of the Afon Dyfi and Cardigan Bay. From the western end of the Nantlle Ridge to the eastern borders of the Aran range is around twenty- five miles. Within this area lie nine distinct mountain groups containing a wealth of mountain walking possibilities, while just outside the National Park, the Rivals sit astride the Lleyn Peninsula and the Berwyns roll upwards to the east of Bala. The traditional bases of Llanberis, Bethesda, Capel Curig, Betws y Coed and Beddgelert serve the northern hills and in the south Barmouth, Dinas Mawddwy, Dolgellau, Tywyn, Machynlleth and Bala provide good locations for accessing the mountains.

Rugged mountains on 3 sides and sandy beaches along the shore. Slate from Blaenau was the cutting edge of lightweight, roofing technology – grey gold. For years it came down by packhorse to the quays on the Afon Dwyryd and was rowed out on the tide past Portmeirion to waiting ships. Victorian ingenuity marks the mountain with what look like enormous ski jumps – beds on which pairs of tramways operated with the weight of a downhill wagon hauling an empty one back up. These connected to the Ffestiniog Railway which opened in 1836 as a gravity train with horses pulling the empty wagons back to Blaenau. The final mile of the railway runs along The Cob, an embankment built by William Madocks to hold back the sea. A natural by-product of this was a deep water port at the northern end, hence Madocks’s Port became Porthmadog, where boats and yachts now bob at their moorings.

THE GWYDYR No. 11 (Oct) THE MONTHLY NEWSLETTER OF THE GWYDYR MOUNTAIN CLUB October can be an indifferent month, the evenings seem to encroach upon us ever darker and the weather is invariably damp to say the least though sometimes a clear frosty morning lifts our spirits with the hope of a ‘good’ winter not far away. This October has been decidedly average with a fair amount of rain and one or two cold and crisp days. Not that the Gwydyr members allow the weather to spoil their fun.............. The first official club meet was our Chapel weekend on the 9th & 10th October. After a late Friday night debate in the kitchen putting the world to right saw five members (Ronnie Davis, Pete Mann, Allan Mc, David Lane Joynt & Carol B) emerge from the Chapel bleary eyed into bright sunshine en route to Croesor and the lovely peak of Cnicht. Certain formalities had to be observed first however and the delightful cafe in Croesor saw the club’s caffeine levels restored to respectable levels before the walk could begin. Mention must be made of this cafe as it’s one of nicest in Snowdonia. Like many of the new cafe’s they are run on a Caban (Co-Op) basis to provide employment and funding for the local communities and some have shops / art galleries attached. The profits are ploughed into a local community fund and I think it only right that we do our utmost to support these ventures. SNOWDONIA NATIONAL PARK One of Britain’s breathing spaces Snowdonia has a great diversity of landscape within its boundary from mountains and moorland to its estuaries and beaches. This glaciated landscape from the hanging valleys and pyramidal peaks to the flat valley bottoms has created a diverse environment for the people of Snowdonia to live and work in and for the visitors who are attracted to its dramatic beauty every year. This resource aims to direct the reader towards the location of a variety of glacial landforms within Snowdonia before studying their impact on human activities and the impact of human activities on the glacial environment. Glacial Features. Grid references are taken from the Ordnance Survey Explorer OL 17 – Snowdon and the Conwy Valley; OL18 Harlech, Porthmadog & Bala or OL23 Cadair Idris and Llyn Tegid Glaciated Plateau Migneint - This feature is the result of sheet glaciation associated with ice caps such as the Columbian Ice field in the Canadian Rockies. In Snowdonia the ice sheet was probably centred on the Migneint/Arenig area and was at it’s height around 18,000 years ago. With a depth of 1400m only the highest mountain peaks would have protruded above the ice as ‘nunataks’. As ice flowed from this ice sheet glacial breaches occurred that started the creation of major passes that we see today. The main features of the Migneint today are marshy depressions and irregular lakes many of which have been in filled with peat deposits with a few rocky outcrops protruding above the ground.
