GraduationNOVEMBER 2011 Awards Essential Information

SOUVENIR GUIDE

Produced by Essential information

We want to make your Graduation and Awards Ceremony a memorable occasion. To help us to do this, we need you to read the following information and take appropriate action.

Attendance. You must advise the Graduation Office if you wish to attend your Graduation Ceremony in person or if you wish to receive your award ‘in absentia’. To confirm either way, complete the on-line booking form which can be found on the University of ’s Corporate Graduation Website and not through SharePoint. Please go to www.chester.ac.uk/graduation and click on the ‘Graduation Booking Form’ link which can be found on the right hand side of the page. If you choose to attend, the booking form will confirm the date and time of your Ceremony and give you the opportunity to book your tickets. If you choose not to attend, the booking form will enable you to confirm the address details of where you want your certificate to be sent within a month of the ceremonies taking place. It is essential that you let us know your intentions either way by Friday 30th September 2011. If you do not have access to a computer, please contact the Graduation Office on 01244 512911 and a booking form will be completed for you. N.B. You cannot confirm your attendance until such time as your award has been confirmed in writing by the University.

Tickets. Graduands and diplomats attending the Ceremony can only be guaranteed two guest tickets. However, requests for additional tickets may be made via the online booking form. Applications by telephone or email will not be accepted. Additional tickets will be allocated in an equitable manner once all replies have been received. It is advisable to make initial travel and accommodation based on the guaranteed ticket allocation, as it is not possible to give any commitment regarding extra tickets. Any extra tickets will be enclosed with your other tickets when they are posted out to you in the week beginning Monday 17th October 2011. N.B. Tickets will NOT be posted to addresses outside of the UK. If your current address is outside of the UK you will need to collect your tickets from the Graduation Office, in person, from Monday 17th October 2011. If you have not collected your tickets before Tuesday 1st November, they will be taken to the Northgate Arena and you can collect them on the day of your Ceremony (when you collect your gown).

Academic Dress. In order to participate in the Ceremony, you will be required to wear the full academic dress of the University. It is your responsibility to order your gown, hood and hat directly from Ede & Ravenscroft. You can do this either online at www.gownhire.co.uk from Monday 1st August 2011 or by telephoning their centre on 01223 861854. Those with speech or hearing impairments can use text phone - dial 1800101223861854 to access the RNID Typetalk system. Please make sure that you have ordered your academic dress at least 21 days before the Ceremonies are due to take place otherwise you may have to hire a gown on the day at an additional cost. N.B. Ede & Ravenscroft recommend that men should wear dark suits, white shirts and ties and women should wear dark skirts or trousers and white or light coloured blouses as the academic hood is held in place by the buttons. It is also recommended that you wear warm clothes as the Cathedral may be cold in November.

Debt. University policy specifies that no award or degree will be presented to any person with an outstanding debt. It is your responsibility to check if this is the case. Unpaid fees or library fines must be settled, or books returned to the library by Friday 30th September 2011. Any student who has not settled their debts with the Finance Department by this date will not be permitted to graduate or be awarded a degree, diploma or certificate.

Academic Appeals. University policy specifies that no student should attend their Graduation Ceremony pending the outcome of an Academic Appeal. It is your responsibility to contact the Graduation Office on 01244 512911 if you have an outstanding appeal. An Academic Appeal will not be accepted or considered further if you attend your Graduation Ceremony and accept your award.

Photography. The official photographer for the University is Ede & Ravenscroft. It is not compulsory to book, though it is advisable, to avoid congestion on the day. If you wish to book please see page 14 for details.

Disability. If you require any form of assistance during your Graduation Ceremony, it is your responsibility to contact the Graduation Office on 01244 512911 and make them aware of your requirements. Alternatively, you can email [email protected] or give details in the ‘special requirements’ section on the online booking form. Alternative formats - large print, tape, Braille, translation. To obtain this publication in an alternative format, please contact the University’s Corporate Communications Department on 01244 511450. Congratulations!

After years spent studying diligently, I am delighted that you have earned the privilege of joining your colleagues and mentors to celebrate your academic achievements at our Graduation and Awards Ceremony.

This brochure is aimed at giving you a taste of what is in store at this very special occasion for you, your families and friends in the historic splendour of Chester Cathedral. Please read it carefully, follow the instructions contained in the Important Information section opposite, and advise our Graduation Ceremonies team of your plans to attend. You can look forward to a day to remember, with trumpeters heralding the beginning of the Ceremony and the congregation applauding everyone who has received a degree or award as they process out, to mark their newly-qualified status. The pageantry and tradition honoured in our twice yearly ceremonies make them significant dates in the civic calendar, as the city streets fill up with black gowns, mortar boards and brightly-coloured hoods. We look forward to welcoming you into the distinguished fellowship of former students and hope that you will maintain your links with the institution for many years to come. With my personal thanks for your individual contribution as a student at the University of Chester and every best wish for the future.
