2.6 Storage Assessment

Commercial Storage Storage Used by Humanitarian Organizations Public Sector Storage Cold Chain

Storage facilities are available in all main towns in Benin. Most of these facilities are privately owned and are in an acceptable condition. Warehouses equipment such as pallets, tarpaulins, wheelbarrows, scales, weighbridges, etc. are available in the country and could even be imported from the Humanitarian Response Depot in Accra. As well, fumigation products can be purchased in Benin. It should be noted that to find the big storage capacity in Benin is difficult. There is no high limited storage structure in all over the country. Only the cotton factories have big storages.

Commercial Storage

There are many storage facilities including bonded warehouses near the Ports of and some main towns. In the northern part of the Benin, there are some storage premises, but are relatively small and not designed for large scale storing and their availability is affected during the harvest season of cotton, and certain cereals produced in the country.

Storage Used by Humanitarian Organizations

WFP’s government partner, the Direction Nationale des Projects, has a network of eight warehouses throughout the country, for a total storage capacity of 4,650 mt. These warehouses are in the following locations: , , , Kandi, , Porto-Novo, Cotonou and Bohicon.

Each humanitarian organization has its own stores where they are storing their items.

The presence of UNHRD in Accra, Ghana is also an asset to be considered as a temporarily storage option for some organizations. The current storage capacity available in Benin and which are used by WFP in the below.

Public Sector Storage

There is some public storage available to be used by any kind agency of humanitarian in different locations in Benin if the request and the need are formulated to the local authorities. But, most of the existing warehouses need strong renovation works before using. The best option is to directlycontact the Ministry or the Department heads in the locality who will help in identifying the available warehouses or locations to be occupied.
