L. A. TIMES STORY SHOWS PROPOSITION 17 WINNING BY GOOD MARGIN

(CFLNL) SAN FRANCISCO. -- The Times last week re- ported that Proposition 17, the AFL-backed tax revision initiative, was leading by a substantial margin in pre-election polls. The Times quoted Dr. Arnold 0. Beckman, Southern California chairman of the committee to Defeat Proposition 17, as saying the chances of defeating the measure "appear dismal at the moment" . Beckman disclosed a statewide poll taken by Facts Consolidated shows that 54 percent of the voters in Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, Ventura and Orange counties would vote in favor of the proposition, 28 percent against it, and 18 percent are still undecided. "Statewide," Dr. Beckman reported, "the picture is somewhat better, though still dismal. The full state count showed 48.7 per- cent yes, 32 percent no, and 19.3 percent undecided." The Times story tended to agree with a professional poll taken by the California State Federation of Labor, ..he poll shiowed No. 17 leading throughout the state 58 percent to 42 percent.
