Who comes to mind? Chances are for most of us it would be a historical figure, politician, athlete, teacher, and our parents. While all of these people have very different roles in the world, they have impacted our lives in one way or another. Honesty, integrity, compassion, and enthusiasm—these are just a few words that may describe our role models. For one reason or another, we are attracted and influenced by these individuals and strive to be like them. What truly makes a great leader? While all leaders have their own style and approach, there are many key similarities among them. A great leader knows how to manage people, deal with ambiguity, and is well-rounded about the subject or activity at hand. Above and beyond all else, a great leader must have excellent listening skills. In order to be admired, you need to show your followers that you care—not only about the cause you are representing but also an interest in the people who are working with you. It means a lot to someone when you take the time to listen to their story, remember their birthday, or remember their favorite sports team, to name a few. Through your experiences—whether it is in the classroom, at work, or elsewhere—you will develop skills to be a leader. Next time you are in a leadership role, think back to your role models and the strong traits that they exhibit. This will offer you motivation and guidance about how to handle situations and work with different people. As you become well-rounded in your role as a leader, keep in mind that you will begin to generate more awareness, which may in turn, make you a role model to someone else.
