Nadeem Al-Abdalla, Ba, Ma BIBLIOGRAPHY OF ENGLISH BOOKS ABOUT IRAQ A Selected Bibliography of Books published in English about Iraq & Mesopotamia 1800 – 2000 Compiled by NADEEM AL-ABDALLA, BA, MA 1 2 This work is dedicated to Star 3 BIBLIOGRAPHY OF ENGLISH BOOKS ABOUT IRAQ A Selected Bibliography of Books published in English about Iraq & Mesopotamia 1800 – 2000 Compiled by NADEEM AL-ABDALLA, BA, MA London 2013 4 TABLE OF CONTENTS Page Nos. Foreword 7 - 9 Bibliographic List 1800 – 1850 11 - 55 1851 – 1900 56 – 147 1901 – 1950 148 – 291 1951 – 2000 292 – 515 5 6 FOREWORD This is a preliminary list of the books published in English about Iraq (Mesopotamia) from 1800 to 2000, and forms part of the efforts of the newly-formed International Centre for Anglo-Iraqi Studies (ICAIS) to document and present all publications written in English about Iraq & Mesopotamia. My bibliography aims to assist in the preservation of the intellectual and international heritage related to Iraq, particularly after three decades of war which led to Iraq losing many libraries, museums and other intellectual heritage items. This edition contains a selection of approximately 2,500 book titles, mainly first editions. Future editions of this bibliography will contain approximately 5,000 book titles. There are, however, approximately 6,000 – 9,000 books published in English about Iraq & Mesopotamia between 1800 and 2000. Many books about Iraq & Mesopotamia during this period have also been published in other languages. It is preferable for similar bibliographies to be dedicated to each language. This list of books covers two main aspects. The first being Mesopotamia in its historic sense (ie, books to cover the history and archaeological sites of Mesopotamia such as Sumer, Babylonia and Assyria), and the second being Mesopotamia as it refers to the modern land covering most of the current Iraq and parts of Syria and Turkey. The British have used the ancient Greek name “Mesopotamia” to define the land which is now Iraq in their publications until 1920. The modern Iraq, with its new name and political borders, state and government, was established in 1920, although the names “Iraq” and “Irak” have been used for this area for centuries. A number of books published in English between 1914 and 1920 refer to the British “Mesopotamia Campaign”, the military campaign between the British and Ottoman empires which resulted in the end of the 7 Ottoman Empire and the start of the British influence and mandate in Iraq. This list of books also covers aspects of Iraq’s cultural, social, political and daily life. This bibliography mainly consists of “books” written in English, mainly or partly, about Iraq & Mesopotamia. It does not include the journals, magazines and periodicals which have been published in English about Iraq & Mesopotamia between 1800 and 2000. I envisage a separate future bibliography to cover these journals, magazines and periodicals, referring to each journal or magazine with all articles published therein between 1800 and 2000 (eg, a page dedicated to the National Geographic Magazine’s articles on Iraq from 1888 to 2000, and also with other journals such as Time Magazine and other periodicals). This list has been designed to follow a chronological timescale from 1800 to 2000, and shows the changing face of Iraq & Mesopotamia through this time. By going through the chronological timescale of 200 years, the readers will feel that they are in a time machine as they note the number of publications and the nature of these publications. For instance, many of the books published between 1840 and 1870 focus on ancient history (eg, excavations at Nimrud). Many of the books published between 1914 and 1930 focus on the British “Mesopotamia campaign” and the role of Britain in the newly established state of Iraq. From 1990 to 2000, many of the books focus on the Iraqi-Kuwaiti issues and the 1991 Gulf War and its aftermath. Whilst a small number of bibliographies have dealt with Iraq, these bibliographies have been arranged by author and subject and not by following a chronological timescale. The timescale given in this bibliography (1800-2000) is not covered by the other bibliographies referred to. At this stage I have arranged this bibliography as a preliminary list and this will be published online, giving readers the option to search by timeframe, subject and author. Readers will also 8 have the option to leave comments on any book referred to in this bibliography by following the relevant weblinks, which may also be used to download the books referred to where possible. The sources contained in this bibliography have been gathered over several years and have been taken from my own personal research and library, and from the physical and electronic sources of the British Library and the Library of Congress, and from the electronic sources of the California libraries, in addition to internet search engines and other websites such as Amazon and Ebay. I hope that this bibliography will highlight and honour the work published by those who studied and visited Iraq (Mesopotamia) in the last 200 years, and to uncover many forgotten books published during this time. This bibliography seeks to assist readers, researchers and linguists in their quest to find suitable sources to further their study and knowledge of Iraq & Mesopotamia. • The Independent Personal1ty of the Palestinians*
THE INDEPENDENT PERSONAL1TY OF THE PALESTINIANS* Türkkaya ATAÖV The exodus and the dispersal of the Palestinian people af- ter the occupation of their land by the racist Zionist entity could not hinder the tradition of national expression. This expression, linked to the national question, was even developed as a reaction to foreign invasion. No doubt, the Palestinian armed struggle, follovving the Israeli attack in 1967, has caused an explosion of a potential energy not only in terms of military force, but in the realm of culture and arts. Palestinian culture, in the form of poetry, folk tales, popular singing, dancing, national costumes, embroidery, ceramics, carving, glass and metal work or various other forms of expression, is the vivid proof of the existence of a homeland and a people's yearning for it. The Palestinian masses, under occupation or in exile, are gathering, safeguarding and developing their ovvn culture, knowing ful 1 well that the preservation of culture is an effective vvay of resistance to attempts undermining national consciousness. The Zionist entity has not only looted the land of the Palestini- ans, but is also suppressing their culture and what is more, trying to usurpe it from them. But the Palestinians are engaged in a struggle to obtain recognition of their independent personality and existence. In spite of Zionist aggression, the ı oots of a peop- le, deep in the Palestinian soil, cannot be erased. * The Palestinians were avvare of the dangers posed by Zio- nist immigration, much earlier than generally accepted. Joint Chiefs say invasion 'only way' to totally disarm N Korea Image copyright GETTY IMAGES Image caption US soldiers take part in "Warrior Strike" exercises in South Korea in September A Pentagon assessment has declared the only way to completely destroy all parts of North Korea's nuclear weapons programme is through a ground invasion. Rear Admiral Michael Dumont expressed the opinion on behalf of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in a letter to Congressman Ted Lieu. Mr Dumont said calculating "even the roughest" potential casualty figures would be extremely difficult. He also gave some detail on what the first hours of a war would involve. "The only way to 'locate and destroy - with complete certainty - all components of North Korea's nuclear weapons programs' is through a ground invasion," he wrote in response to Congressman Lieu's questions about a potential conflict. The risks involved included a potential nuclear counter-attack by North Korea while US forces attempted to disable its "deeply buried, underground facilities", he said. "A classified briefing is the best venue for a detailed discussion," he added. The Joint Chiefs of Staff directly advise the president of the United States on military matters. Figure 1. of the rock-carved cones from Turkey's their lava caps. See page 45, footnote. UNIVERSITY MUSEUM BULLETIN VOL. 17 DECEMBER, 19S2 NO. 2 A "FULBRIGHT" IN TURKEY BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Early in September 1951 I came to Istanbul as the first Fulbright Re- search Scholar appointed by the United State:, Educational Committee in Turkey. fi'or practically a whole year, until late in August 1952, I worked in Istanbul's Museum of the Ancient Orient, studying and copying the Sumerian literary tablets in the Nippur collection of its Tablet Archives. The pages to follow wiJI attempt to sketch briefly the purpose and nature of these researches and summarize some of their results.1 One of the more significant archaeological contributions of the past hundred years to the humanities consists of the discovery, restoration, and translation of the Sumerian literary documents, the oldest group of belles lettres in the history of civilization. Inscribed more than thirty-five hundred years ago in the cuneiform script on some four thousand clay tablets and fragments, they include a varied assortment of man's first recorded myths and epic tales, h ymns and lamentations, proverbs and essays. Long before the Hebrews wrote down their Bible, and the Greeks their Iliad and Odyssey, the Sumerians, who were neither Indo-Europeans nor Semites and whose original homeland may have been in the steppes of Central Asia, created a rich and mature literature, largely poetic in form, which was copied, translated, and imitated all over the ancient L T his is not to deny the great debt we owe even in th:s highly specialized field of cuneiform research to such institutions as the British Museum, the Louvre, the Berlin Museum, and the Ashmolean :Museum; the material from these museums copied and published by such scholars as Zimmem and De Genouillac, King, Langdon, and Gadd have proved to be invaluable for the restoration of the Sumerian literary documents.

  • The Mesopotamian Origins of Byzantine Symbolism and Early Christian Iconography
The Mesopotamian Origins of Byzantine Symbolism and Early Christian Iconography BY PAUL JOSEPH KRAUSE The eagle-god is a prominent iconographic symbol of ancient Mesopotamian religion which wielded tremendous power in the Mesopotamian imagination. The eagle-like gods of Mesopotamia eventually evolved into double-headed gods whose depictions became widespread in imperial and religious symbolism and iconography in Sumer and Akkad.1 These symbols now have common misapprehension as in the common public as being tied to Byzantine Empire of Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages. Rather, the Byzantines most likely inherited these Mesopotamian symbols and employed them in a similar manner as the Sumerians, Akkadians, and Hittites did. Likewise, the iconographic symbols of the moon god Nanna-Sin, who had the power to render the fate of humans,2 re-appeared in early Christian iconography depicting Christ in the Last Judgment. To best understand the iconographic practices and symbols used by the Byzantine Empire and emerging early Christian Church is to understand the foundational contexts by which these symbols first arose and the common religious practice of transferring and re-dedicating prior religious shrines to new deities. “Today the Byzantine eagle flutters proudly from the flags of nations from Albania to Montenegro, and though each state has its local version of the church, the heritage they all bear 1 C.N.
