2018 Headlines ORANGE RANK 17TH IN PENN MONTO/NFHCA COACHES POLL Syracuse University’s field hockey team (8-7) moved to No. 17 in this week’s Penn Monto/NFHCA Coaches Poll. The Orange finished the regular season with a 5-2 setback on Saturday afternoon and head into the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament this week.

The Orange are paired with No. 3 Duke in the first round of the conference tournament on Thursday, Nov. 1 at 1:30 p.m. in Chapel Hill, N.C. ‘Cuse is the No. 7 seed in the tournament and Duke is the No. 2 seed. The two met once during the regular season on Sept. 14 when the Blue Devils slid past the Orange 1-0 at J.S. Coyne Stadium. Orange goalkeeper Borg van der Velde made a career-high 11 saves in the matchup.

All seven ACC programs are ranked in the top-20 with North Carolina holding the top spot with a 17-0 record. Duke is third with a 14-4 slate while Louis- ville (12) and Boston College (13) also sit inside the top-15. Virginia checks in at No. 16 and Wake Forest is No. 20 this week.

ORANGE CELEBRATE 10TH ANNIVERSARY OF 2008 FIELD HOCKEY FINAL FOUR Ten years after they made history by guiding Syracuse to its first NCAA Field Hockey Final Four, members of the remarkable squad reunited on campus to reminisce on the anniversary of their accomplishment. The weekend celebration began with these familiar faces flooding the confines of J.S. Coyne Stadium Friday afternoon to watch the 12th-ranked Syracuse Field Hockey team host Pacific.

Now mothers, businesswomen and entrepreneurs, these women were back to celebrate a season that laid the foundation for what Syracuse hockey is today.

“It means everything to me,” said head coach Ange Bradley about having the 2008 team back on campus.

Bradley guided the Orange to a 22-2 record in 2008, her second season at the helm. That team earned the first No. 1 national ranking for any women’s team in school history, claimed the BIG EAST Championship and reached the NCAA Final Four for the first time in program history.

The Orange won 14-straight games to begin the season. ‘Cuse avenged a regular season loss to Connecticut in the BIG EAST Tournament when they scored on a penalty corner with 00:00 on the clock to win 1-0.

Syracuse went on to earn wins over No. 17 UMass and No. 9 Princeton in the NCAA Tournament before the season ended with a 3-2 overtime loss to No. 2 Wake Forest in the National Semifinals.

Since 2008, Syracuse has made 10-consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament highlighted by the 2015 National Championship, the first women’s team title in school history.

The Orange alumnae cheered loud and proud on Friday night watching Syracuse come-from-behind to defeat Pacific 3-2 in overtime. On Saturday, the current team and alumnae gathered for a tailgate before they were recognized on the field at the Carrier Dome during Syracuse’s 51-21 victory over UConn in football.

On Sunday, after the 2008 team was celebrated on the field at halftime, Olympian and ‘Cuse grad Shannon Taylor gathered the current squad for a pep talk that inspired a comeback. Syracuse went on to gut out a 2-1 win over Penn in a shootout to cap off an exciting weekend for everyone at J.S. Coyne Stadium.

JECKO EARNS FIRST INTERNATIONAL CAP, USWNT DEFEATS KOREA Syracuse alumna Jess Jecko earned her first international cap with a 2-1 win over No. 10 Korea in the Sompo Cup Four Nationals Women’s Ibaraki International Tournament on Wednesday. Joined by a pair of former teammates, and Laura Hurff, the Orange trio won its first game of the round robin tournament in Osaka, Japan.

Korea took a 1-0 lead when Joengihn Kim snuck a shot past Jecko off a rebound. Team USA evened it up when Tara Vittese beat two Korean defend- ers and pushed past Sanga Lee in goal. In the fourth quarter, tipped a shot from Kathleen Sharkey in for the 2-1 advantage. At the end of the game, the Japan Hockey Association presented Jecko with the “Queen of the Game” award for her outstanding game in goal and three shutout periods.

The U.S. returns to action Thursday, Sept. 13, to play No. 15 Japan at 5:30 ET. Fans can watch each game live for the remainder of the five-day tourna- ment. ALYSSA MANLEY: NATIONAL CHAMPION TO HALL OF FAMER Olympian, National Champion and now Hall of Famer. Former Syracuse Field Hockey standout Alyssa Manley will be inducted to the Warwick High School Hall of Fame on Sept. 14.
