Outline of Readers Services and Typika with Paschal Office on Great and All-holy Pascha

Before the service of Typika, if they have the strength, families can offer readers versions of Midnight Office, the Resurrection Service, and Paschal Orthros in front of their . They can offer these services around midnight or on the morning of Pascha. Download the full Paschal Vigil and use these instructions alongside.

Midnight Office

To replace any exclamation given by the priest, the lay leader says: “Through the prayers of our holy fathers, O Lord Christ our God, have mercy on us, and save us. Amen.”

For verses designated for chanters, families can sing or read them to the best of their abilities.

Instead of the final litany before and dismissal of the Midnight Office, we say:

Choir: Lord, have mercy. (twelve times) Leader: Through the prayers of our Holy Fathers, Lord Jesus Christ our God, have mercy upon us and save us.

Choir: Amen.

Resurrection Service

The two hymns can be sung once each. Then, the lay leader plainly reads the Gospel lection as follows:

Leader: The reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Mark. (16:1-8)

Leader: “When the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James…”

“Glory to Thee, O Lord, glory to Thee” and everything else is omitted.

Paschal Orthros

VARIOUS ARRANGEMENTS OF “CHRIST IS RISEN” Arabic (slow, chant) // English (slow, chant) // English-Arabic-Greek (quick, chant) English-Greek (slow, choral) // Arabic (slow, choral)

To replace any exclamation given by the priest, the lay leader says: “Through the prayers of our holy fathers, O Lord Jesus Christ our God, have mercy on us, and save us. Amen.”

Then, the whole family can sing the tenfold “Christ is risen” with its Psalm verses. The lay leader takes the verses designated for the priest.

Instead of the Great Litany, we say:

Choir: Lord, have mercy. (forty times)

The family can say the “Dialogue with the Door-keeper” and then sing or read the of Pascha. Be sure to sing or read the hymns after the third and sixth odes of the canon.

Instead of the Little Litanies, we say:

Choir: Amen.

At the conclusion of Paschal Orthros, we follow the order below.

PASCHAL IN TONE FIVE (or Plain Reading) Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death by death; and upon those in the tombs bestowing life! (THRICE)

IN THAT WE HAVE BEHELD (Plain Reading) In that we have beheld the Resurrection of Christ, let us bow down before the Holy Lord Jesus, the only sinless One. Thy Cross do we adore, O Christ, and Thy Holy Resurrection we praise and glorify: for Thou art our God, and we know none other beside Thee; we call upon Thy Name. O come, all ye faithful, let us adore Christ’s Holy Resurrection. For lo, through the Cross is joy come into all the world. Ever blessing the Lord, let us sing His Resurrection: for in that He endured the Cross for us, He hath destroyed death by death. (THRICE)

THE HYPAKOE OF PASCHA IN TONE FOUR (or Plain Reading) When they who were with Mary came, anticipating the dawn, and found the stone rolled away from the sepulcher, they heard from the Angel: Why seek ye among the dead, as though He were mortal man, Him Who abideth in everlasting light? Behold the grave-clothes. Go quickly and proclaim to the world that the Lord is risen, and hath put death to death. For He is the Son of God, Who saveth the race of man.

KONTAKION OF PASCHA IN TONE EIGHT (CHANT) (CHORAL) (or Plain Reading) Though Thou didst descend into the grave, O Immortal One, yet didst Thou destroy the power of Hades, and didst arise as victor, O Christ God, calling to the myrrh-bearing women, Rejoice, and giving peace unto Thine Apostles, O Thou Who dost grant resurrection to the fallen.

Readers Paschal Vigil 2 and Typika Service SCRIPTURAL READINGS FOR PASCHA  Both of the New Testament lessons are read without liturgical introduction or conclusion. The readers start with “The Reading from…” and proceeds.

THE EPISTLE The Reading from the Acts of the Apostles. (1:1-8) In the first book, O Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach, until the day when He was taken up, after He had given commandment through the Holy Spirit to the Apostles whom He had chosen. To them He presented Himself alive after His passion by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days, and speaking of the kingdom of God. And while staying with them He charged them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, He said, “You heard from Me; for John baptized with water, but before many days you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” So when they had come together, they asked Him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has fixed by His own authority. But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria and to the end of the earth.”

THE GOSPEL The Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. John. (1:1-17) In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God; all things were made through Him, and without Him was not anything made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came for testimony, to bear witness to the light, that all might believe through him. He was not the light, but came to bear witness to the light. The true light that enlightens every man was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, yet the world knew Him not. He came to His own home, and His own people received Him not. But to all who received Him, who believed in His Name, He gave power to become children of God; who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth; we have beheld His glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father. (John bore witness to Him, and cried, “This was He of Whom I said, ‘He Who comes after me ranks before me, for He was before me.’”) And from His fullness have we all received, grace upon grace. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

TROPARIA OF THE PASCHAL OFFICE (Plain Reading) In the grave with the body but in Hades with the soul as God; in paradise with the thief, and on the throne with the Father and the Holy Spirit wast Thou, O Christ, filling all things, Thyself uncircumscribed.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As life-bearing, as more splendid than paradise and more radiant than any royal chamber, O Christ, is shown forth from Thy tomb the fountain of our Resurrection.

Both now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen. Rejoice, O thou hallowed, divine abode of the Most High, for through thee, O , was joy given unto those who cry aloud to thee: Blessed art thou among women, O all-undefiled Lady.

Readers Paschal Vigil 3 and Typika Service People: Lord, have mercy. (FORTY TIMES)

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; both now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

More honorable than the Cherubim, and more glorious beyond compare than the Seraphim, thou who without corruption bearest God the Word and art truly Theotokos: we magnify thee.

If anyone has labored from the first hour, let him today receive his just reward. If anyone has come at the third hour, with thanksgiving let him keep the feast. If anyone has arrived at the sixth hour, let him have no misgivings; for he shall suffer no loss. If anyone has delayed until the ninth hour, let him draw near without hesitation. If anyone has arrived at the eleventh hour, let him not fear on account of his delay. For the Master is gracious and receives the last, even as the first; he gives rest to him that comes at the eleventh hour, just as to him who has labored from the first. Let all partake of the feast of faith. Let all receive the riches of goodness. Let no one lament his poverty, for the universal kingdom has been revealed. Let no one mourn his transgressions, for pardon has dawned from the grave. Let no one fear death, for the Savior’s death has set us free. He that was taken by death has annihilated it! He descended into hades and took hades captive! He embittered it when it tasted his flesh! And anticipating this Isaiah exclaimed, “Hades was embittered when it encountered thee in the lower regions.” It was embittered, for it was abolished! It was embittered, for it was mocked! It was embittered, for it was purged! It was embittered, for it was despoiled! It was embittered, for it was bound in chains! It took a body and, face to face,

Readers Paschal Vigil 4 and Typika Service met God! It took earth and encountered heaven! It took what it saw but crumbled before what it had not seen! “O death, where is thy sting? O hades, where is thy victory?” Christ is risen, and you are overthrown! Christ is risen, and the demons are fallen! Christ is risen, and the angels rejoice! Christ is risen, and life reigns! Christ is risen, and not one dead remains in the tomb! For Christ, being raised from the dead, has become the First-fruits of them that slept. To him be glory and might unto ages of ages. Amen.

APOLYTIKION OF ST. JOHN CHRYSOSTOM IN TONE EIGHT (CHANT) Grace shining forth from thy mouth like fire hath enlightened the universe and hath disclosed to the world treasures of uncovetousness and hath shown us the heights of humility. But as thou dost instruct us by thy words, O Father John Chrysostom, intercede with the Word, Christ God, to save our souls.

MEGALYNARION FOR PASCHA IN TONE ONE (CHANT) (CHORAL) The Angel cried unto her that is full of grace: O pure Virgin, rejoice, and again I say, rejoice; for thy Son hath arisen from the grave on the third day. Shine, shine, O new Jerusalem, for the glory of the Lord hath arisen upon thee; dance now and be glad, O Zion, and do thou exult, O pure Theotokos, in the arising of Him Whom thou didst bear.
