I have just been on holiday to a lovely rural area in the foothills of the South Downs north and slightly west of Chichester near the village of Compton. All the villages have parish magazines which I have enjoyed reading and learning from.

So came the idea for a regular pet of the month photograph ... and here is our donkey Mr Tumble photographed by co-editor

Bridget Harris. Mr Tumble is sad because his friend LINK Pingu has just died and we are looking for a new companion for him ...we are sure we will find one with the help of the RSPCA and local donkey networks who are out looking.

If you would like to feature your pet in future editions please send a photo and a caption explaining why your pet is “pet of the month” to [email protected]

Finally, if you are a distributor of the Link (or a new volunteer) or would like to come along to give us your views and ideas please come to a tea party in Hever Church at 4pm in Sunday 13 October. Best wishes Joanna Wade

1 Alfresco dining... As the glorious summer draws to a close I realise how very lucky we are to have so many good places to eat outdoors. In Four Elms the busy cafe in the Barns has a terrace with a good outlook towards the North Downs and Markbeech’s Kentish Horse has a splendid garden with a playground and spectacular views south.

Hever has several places: the Greyhound and Henry VIII both have excellent outdoor eating spaces and the Castle has a number of cafes to choose from plus liberal ice cream outlets.

The new kid on the block is the Castle Golf Club which has a lovely new outdoor area by the restaurant - when I was there the fountain was playing and baby moorhens were swimming around the large pond within feet of the table. Seize the moment! Joanna Wade
