SUMMARY

Mexico is a fantastic country for surfing. There is a huge variety of breaks and plenty of swell. Uncrowded breaks can be found along the entire length of the Pacific Ocean coastline. The waves can be surfed all year round, and the coastline is pounded with consistent surf. Mexico has over 6000 miles of coastline with over 1500 miles on the mainland Pacific.

April to October is the main season and with nice weather, warm water temperatures and good waves, you could not ask for anything more. Waves are generated all year round by the deep Southern Ocean low pressure systems and more localized tropical storms, June to October being hurricane season.

DAY 7 April 11th – Yelapa

If you haven't heard of this tiny beach haven in Puerto Vallarta’s Bahia de Banderas, that's a good thing. It has gone decades without the infiltration of obstructive high-rises or a mass influx of tourists. Some say it's Mexico’s last authentic beach town, and we'd agree. So much so that we put together these eight reasons why it's absolutely the country's top undiscovered stretch of sand. Twenty miles south of Puerto Vallarta, Yelapa is so off the radar you can only arrive by boat.

DAY 8 April 12th – Chamela

* Alternative Anchorage in Islas Colorado or Costa Careyes

An entrance to the Pacific Ocean from the coast, the splendid Bahia Chamela consists of eleven islands and several islets. Punta Rivas and Punta Farallon rise as faithful guardians of the bay. At Pasavera, one of the most representative islands of Chamela, you can spot an extensive variety of marine birds. The bay's transparent waters also make it ideal for diving. La Colorada, Cocinas, Novilla, Esfinge, La Negrita and the islands San Andres, San Pedro and San Agustin complete the charming circle of islands. In the beaches of San Mateo, Felicillas, La Fortuna and Perula, waves are strong but it isn't dangerous to swim. You won't find luxury hotels here, only shelters or small, quaint palapas (perfect for those seeking an alternative touristic experience). At La Rumorosa it is harder to predict the intensity of the waves. In Playas Cuatas, waves are peaceful and favorable for sailing or skiing if that's your thing. At the beaches of Tejones, Cuixmala, El Tecuan, Tecanatita and Ventanas, waves are more dynamic and not recommended for swimming, diving or sailing. In the last of these, rocks form small pools that resemble windows.
