NEVER

SYNOPSIS

In her breakout dramatic debut, Zelda Williams (daughter of Robin Williams) stars alongside Zachary Booth in this tender portrait of the unlikely friendship of two twenty-somethings in Seattle that blossoms, complicates, and ultimately redefines their understanding of sexuality and modern relationships. NEVER tells the story of Denim (Booth), new to Seattle and eager for the next phase of his life to begin. But when he falls in love with Nikki (Williams), a gay singer- songwriter struggling in Seattle’s music scene, the sudden and intense friendship they discover will change their lives – and force them to question everything they thought they knew about love.

With original music by Nora Kirkpatrick (of Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros) and a powerful supporting cast featuring this generation’s top young actors, the producers of SEX LIES AND VIDEOTAPE are proud to present an intimate and stirring examination of friendship, love, and contemporary relationships.

ABOUT THE CAST

Zelda Williams (NIKKI)

At the age of 14, Zelda made her cinematic debut as “Melissa” in David Duchovny’s HOUSE OF D opposite Tea Leoni and her late father, Robin Williams. Ten years later, Zelda has emerged as one of the top young artists of her generation, having garnered acclaim for her breakout role as “Nikki” in Brett Allen Smith’s NEVER – a performance which won her the Best Actress Award from the Domani Film Society of New York City.

Zelda also starred in WERE THE WORLD MINE, which won various festival awards across the country including Best Film at LA’s Outfest. She can also be seen in the independent feature DON’T LOOK UP from notable Hong Kong director Fruit Chan, indie horror DETENTION, Adam Mason’s LUSTER starring opposite Mathew Rhys, Billy Burke, and Andrew Howard, as well as Blake Freeman’s NOOBZ alongside Casper Van Dien.

In television, Zelda was recognized at the 2015 Behind the Voice Actor Awards as one of the Breakout Voice Actors of the Year for her performance in THE LEGEND OF KORRA, for which she was also the recipient of the Best Vocal Ensemble Award (alongside Oscar-winner J.K. Simmons, Anne Heche, and Henry Rollins).

Zachary Booth (DENIM)

Zach Booth, one of GenArt’s 7 Fresh Faces in Film, has only begun to make his mark, seamlessly segueing between the big and small screens and the stage. With an incredibly versatile repertoire of characters and critically acclaimed performances under his belt, Booth is fast becoming one of the most sought after young actors of our time.

Zach took on the pivotal staring role of a closeted, crack-addicted lawyer in Sundance Grand Prize winner Ira Sachs’ autobiographical film, the Teddy Award winning KEEP THE LIGHTS ON, which premiered to critical acclaim at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival and had its theatrical premiere in September. He has had the honor of working on films with such prestigious directors as Ang Lee for TAKING WOODSTOCK and Jodie Foster for THE BEACER. He has co- starred with such veterans as Patricia Clarkson in LAST WEEKEND, alongside Bruce Willis in the film ASSASSINATION OF A HIGH SCHOOL PRESIDENT, and Christopher Walken and Mia Farrow in the Todd Solondz film DARK HORSE. He worked with Michael Cera and Kat Dennings on NICK AND NORA’S INFINITE PLAYLIST and Ben Stiller and Jason Schwartzman on THE MARK PEASE EXPERIENCE. Television audiences have come to know Zach as Michael Hewes on the Emmy Award winning DAMAGES. His character is the son of Glenn Close’s Patty Hewes (a role for which she has won both Emmy and Golden Globe Awards). ABOUT THE CREW

Brett Allen Smith (WRITER, DIRECTOR, PRODUCER) Brett Allen Smith is an American filmmaker and journalist based in the Middle East. He co- produced first film as writer/director, NEVER, independently with Outlaw Productions (SEX LIES AND VIDEOTAPE, TRAINING DAY) when he was 22 years old. The film starred Zelda Williams in her breakout role, as well as Zachary Booth and Angela Sarafyan, earning the coveted Best Actress and Best Screenplay Awards from the NYC Domani Film Society in 2014.

Smith’s first feature as a producer, NO MATTER WHAT, starred Amy Seimetz and premiered at the 2011 SXSW Film Festival; it was distributed internationally by FilmMovement the following year. His short films and documentaries have screened in over 120 film festivals internationally. Smith is also a published author and produced playwright.

Andrew Schmidt (PRODUCER) Does it resonate? It’s the one question worth asking of any project. Andrew’s worked nearly every side of filmmaking – whether directing backstage videos for NBC’s THE SING-OFF or shooting an Edward Sharpe concert for Thrash Lab’s RITUALS, that one question has been a guiding principle.

NEVER is Andrew’s first feature film. As a script it hit all the right chords — intimate and honest, bittersweet and universal; it was a film that just needed to exist. Now it does. And Andrew couldn’t be more excited to put it out in front of an audience, in the hopes that it’ll ring just as true for them.

Cherie Saulter (PRODUCER) Cherie has been an independent film producer for the last five years. MEDICINE FOR MELANCHOLY (IFC Films), which marked her first feature credit as a producer, received three Independent Spirit Award Nominations and earned Cherie an NAACP Image Award nomination. She has since Associate Produced THE MYTH OF THE AMERICAN SLEEPOVER (IFC Films/Sundance Selects), which was one of the few American indies to screen at the Cannes Critic’s Week in 2010, and most recently THIS IS MARTIN BONNER, which won the Best of Next Award at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival.

Deborah Jelin Newmyer (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) Formerly the Senior Vice President at Amblin Entertainment, Deborah Jelin Newmyer worked for twelve years overseeing classic films including THE COLOR PURPLE, JURASSIC PARK, SCHINDLER’S LIST, and the BACK TO THE FUTURE franchise. She’s currently the President of Outlaw Productions, a company she inherited from her late husband and founder Bobby Newmyer, most famous for producing the Cannes and Sundance award-winning film SEX, LIES, AND VIDEOTAPE for director Steven Soderberg. She lives in Los Angeles with her four children – Sofi, Teddy, James, and Billi.

Nora Kirkpatrick (ORIGINAL MUSIC) In addition to accordion-playing for EDWARD SHARPE & THE MAGNETIC ZEROS, for which she received a Grammy Award, Nora Kirkpatrick is well known as an actress for her role as Katherine on ABC Family’s GREEK. Between breaks of EDWARD SHARPE’S worldwide tours, Nora found time to act in feature films including BAYOU TALES for director David DuBose and BIG SUR, an adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s acclaimed novel. Television audiences have most recently come to recognize Kirkpatrick for her role as Rainn Wilson’s would-be girlfriend in the final season of NBC’s hugely successful series THE OFFICE.
