This diverse neighborhood is known for its vibrant street life and boasts a unique mix of commercial and residential offerings, including an array of restaurants, shops, and galleries. Notable in the area is the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural Site, important for both its historic and architectural significance, and Buffalo’s oldest house, the Coit House at 414 Virginia Street. BUFFALO NIAGARA MEDICAL CAMPUS (BNMC) The BNMC is home to the region's top clinical, research, and medical education institutions. In 2001, these institutions came together in partnership with the City of Buffalo, the County of Erie, and the Allentown and Fruit Belt neighborhoods to form BNMC, Inc., which has created a master plan for the development of a world-class medical campus in downtown Buffalo. More than 12,000 people work on the BNMC at the nine regionally-significant institutions and more than 40 public and private companies. FRUIT BELT One of Buffalo's oldest residential neighborhoods, the Fruit Belt is engaged in a renewal marked by new housing construction and streetscape improvements. The neighborhood takes its name from the large number of orchards and gardens planted by its first residents. As the area developed, the streets were named for the fruits that existed in such abundance—Cherry, Grape, Peach. DOWNTOWN: THEATRE & ENTERTAINMENT DISTRICTS Downtown Buffalo’s Theatre District is home to one of the largest concentration of performing arts centers in the country. Each year thousands of people flock here to enjoy everything from innovative productions to classical dramas, musicals, and American standards. The Entertainment District, centered around Chippewa Street, offers a variety of bars, restaurants, and dance clubs. 3 the bnmc institutions BUFFALO HEARING & SPEECH CENTER Founded in 1953, Buffalo Hearing & Speech Center, one of the nation’s largest community based centers, is a not-for-profit organization helping children, adults and families with learning, and communication disorders.
