BASKETBALL DEVELOPMENT TEAMS
ANNOUNCED
180 of the best U14 basketballers descended on Bendigo last weekend for the culmination of the Basketball Victoria Country Regional Academy.
The program started in March with 800 athletes attending the popular U14 Skills Day across 8 regional centres. From that 430 were selected into the Regional Academy and completed the 20 week program in their local area under the guidance of experienced Vic Country Coaches.
At the completion of the 20 week program, each academy selected athletes to attend the weekend “Gold Nugget Basketball Development” Camp in Bendigo.
“This program is important to the overall development of athletes for not only our Vic Country Development Teams, but for future involvement in BVC Elite programs.” BVC’s Craig Hockley said. “This is one of the first steps in the Vic Country and Basketball Australia pathway, not only for the athletes but also for our coaches.”
32 coaches from the Regional areas also attended at Bendigo and whilst assisting the athletes at the camp, they also received guidance and development from senior coaches within Regional Victoria.
Newly appointed, Basketball Victoria Country High Performance Coach, Justin Schueller also attended the Camp and was impressed with the quality of athletes in Regional Victoria.
From the 180 athletes at the camp, 120 will be selected into Vic Country Development Teams to compete at the prestigious Australian Country Junior Basketball Cup and the Southern Cross Basketball Challenge. This will further their development against high quality athletes from all parts of Australia.
Congratulations to all athletes for their achievements in completing the 20 week Regional Academy program and to the athletes selected to represent Vic Country.
“Work completed on developing athletes at local associations in the younger age groups should also be commended.” Craig said.
