MONTHLY REPORT 20 OCTOBER 2017 Christina Rees MP Monthly Report - October 2017 It was wonderful to see the return of Neath Food and Drink Festival this year, where local producers and the town were Rhianna’s Swing Visits Parliament showcased. Local charity raises awareness of important project Rhianna Chellew was just 8 years old when she was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour which quickly resulted in her being wheelchair bound. Rhianna’s parents took her to Ynysanghared Park in Pontypridd, which has a disabled access swing. It meant the world to her to be able to join her able-bodied friends on some of the equipment. She enjoyed so much that her parents looked for other playgrounds with similar equipment but I was delighted to there were not any in Wales. support the “Wear It Pink” campaign to Heartbreakingly, Rhianna passed away surrounded by her family on the 23rd raise awareness of June 2016. As a legacy, family and friends have set up “Rhianna’s Swing” a breast cancer charity aiming to source funding to establish a fully accessible play area in Gnoll Park. Keen to support the project, Christina has been working to raise awareness (and help raise funds), including hosting an MP’s drop-in in Parliament, which was attended by members from across both Houses. THE GREAT SEPTEMBER FAIR IN NEATH The 737th Great September Fair arrived in Neath to yet another warm welcome and I was very happy to massive crowds. Apart from a torrential pledge my support downpour on the Saturday, the week was blessed with fine weather, drawing in people for British and from afar and raising Neath’s profile. -

Sir Keir Starmer, newly elected Leader of the UK Labour Party, set about building his first Shadow Cabinet, following his election win in the Labour Party leadership contest. In our parliamentary system, a cabinet reshuffle or shuffle is an informal term for an event that occurs when the head of a government or party rotates or changes the composition of ministers in their cabinet. Recent scholarship on modern religious history has sought to relocate Britain‟s „secularization moment‟ from the industrialization of the nineteenth century to the social and cultural upheavals of the 1960s. My thesis seeks to add to this debate by examining the way in which the established Church and Christian doctrine continued to play a central role in the politics of the 1980s. More specifically it analyses the conflict between the Conservative party and the once labelled „Tory party at Prayer‟, the Church of England. Both Church and state during this period were at loggerheads, projecting contrasting visions of the Christian underpinnings of the nation‟s political values. The first part of this thesis addresses the established Church. -

Community Engagement Roundup A p r i l - J u l y 2 0 2 1 Community Young Voices Upcoming Walkabouts Conversation Engagement An overview of Community Updates from the Young A look at u pcoming Walkabouts Voices Local Conversations engagement activities in Neath and Grangetown and Regional Forum Community Walkabouts Neath Town Centre The Commissioner visited Neath town centre on Tuesday 29th June 2021, following concerns raised to the Commissioner about increased incidents in anti-social behaviour in the town centre. The Commissioner was accompanied by MP Christina Rees, Councillor Leanne Jones and Local Policing Inspector Matthew Otteson. Whilst speaking to local businesses, comments were made about the number of people who were visibly under the influence of drugs and alcohol in the town centre. Social media was also referred to as the main platform, which was frequently used to fuel negative perceptions and often misrepresented the scale of problems. The Commissioner also visited the Ambassador Hotel, to understand how the efforts of partnership working had provided a safe space for homeless people to receive temporary housing and access to support services. Currently, there were 37 homeless people receiving support at the Ambassador hotel. In response to recent anti-social behaviour related incidents, police officers had increased foot patrols around the town centre and continued to work closely with local organisations and community representatives to address ongoing issues. Local officers were also aware of community tensions relating to plans to permanently locate the Salvation Army. Local businesses and residents were concerned that the individuals seeking support from the Salvation Army, often congregated in the town centre to drink and subsequently this led to anti-social behaviour. -

Global Centre of Rail Excellence UPDATE: NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2019 Welsh Government is working in partnership with Neath Port Talbot and Powys Councils to develop proposals for a Global Centre of Rail THIS UPDATE Excellence (GCRE) on the site of the Nant Helen open cast mine and Onllwyn coal washery site at the head of the Dulais and Tawe Valleys. Ensuring excellence The proposals form an important addition to the site’s restoration Project briefing and strategy brought forward by Celtic Energy and will act as a driver for early engagement rail industry innovation, investment and growth in Wales, the wider UK and internationally. Key politicians back plans There has been a great deal of support and enthusiasm for the project EIA scoping submitted and we are continuing to develop the business case and move forward with plans to submit a planning application in early 2020.
