Text Publishing The Fortunes of Richard Mahony joins the Text Classics stable Read here an edited version of Peter Craven's introduction to the book No Success Like Failure by Peter Craven Only Australia could have coughed up The Fortunes of Richard Mahony. A doctor on the goldfields meets a girl and makes good. He thrives, he fails, he goes off his head. He brings all his bright hopes crashing down around him because he has no capacity for practical life. Call that a national epic. No wonder we settled for the doggerel and the bushrangers. Patrick White read The Fortunes of Richard Mahony as a young man, working as a jackaroo, and thought it was wonderful. He was not wrong. You could argue that the impulse to create an Australian art of fiction filled with that sense of calamity that can rise to tragedy, an art exalted in its scope however rooted in the notations of naturalism, and open to the way Australia can impose itself on the geography of the imagination as a thing of doom, rather than good fortune, all harks back to Richard Mahony. White might have said, with some truth, that he had come out of that rubbishy Ballarat goldfield too. Germaine Greer wrote that Henry Handel Richardson chose to embrace the conventions of naturalism at precisely the moment when those conventions died. It’s a resounding judgement, though not one that can be sustained. Richard Mahony is a great, if belated, novel: Australia Felix was published in 1917, The Way Home in 1925 and Ultima Thule in 1929, seven years after Joyce’s Ulysses and the death of Proust. -

Annual Oration HHR Society (16 March 2019) Stefan Welz (University of Leipzig/ Germany) On Proud Irish, Clumsy Saxons, and Provincial Englishmen: Henry Handel Richardson’s cultural knowledge and tolerance. Introduction Henry Handel Richardson was a writer who could claim a broad range of personal experience and intellectual contact with important cultures of her time. She had both English and Irish roots, a certain Latin element was present, too; she was well read and demonstrated a cultural open-mindedness while growing up in Australia; she studied and lived in Germany for a decade, translated Danish and Norwegian books and visited Scandinavia; she learned French and Italian1. All that was a good precondition for shaping a cosmopolitan mindset. However, Henry Handel Richardson added particular characteristics to this disposition such as curiosity, self-criticism, tolerance, the gift of sharp observation, and the capacity of critical evaluation. In her novels – from Maurice Guest, The Getting of Wisdom, even more so in her trilogy The Fortunes of Richard Mahony, and still in her final book The Young Cosima –, Richardson as a writer makes ample use of all that, although in different degrees and ways. It is undeniable that Richardson’s relation to German culture had a somewhat privileged place among her other cultural interests. Nevertheless, these relations are far from being unbalanced or partial, neither are they uncritical. She had spent formative years in Germany, living in Leipzig, Straßburg2, and Munich – “the ten most impressionable years of my life”, as she put it3. She was fluent in speaking and reading the language – an advantage and a capacity not many other writers and intellectuals from the English-speaking world of the time possessed4. -

William Sterling Overton – Lawyer. Friend/works for Senneck. Member of Aspasia. Jimmy Radburn – Hacker/cracker extraordinaire. Thinks of himself as a cyberspace pirate. His real name is Robert Branwick. -

HENRY HANDEL RICHARDSON 1870-1946 A bibliography to honour the centenary of her birth NATIONAL LIBRARY OF AUSTRALIA HENRY HANDEL RICHARDSON 1870-1946 A BIBLIOGRAPHY TO HONOUR THE CENTENARY OF HER BIRTH COMPILED BY GAY HOWELLS NATIONAL LIBRARY OF AUSTRALIA Canberra 1970 PREFACE The Council of the National Library, in arranging a one day seminar, an evening public lecture and an exhibition for 23 November, 1970 to honour the centenary of Henry Handel Richardson's birth, decided also to publish a Henry Handel Richardson bibliography. This bibliography records not only printed works, but also a range of other source materials including the writer's original manuscripts held in the National Library. It has been com piled by Gay Howells who has also chosen the items for exhibition. The bibliography is based on the holdings of the National Library and of the Library of New South Wales, whose help is warmly acknowledged. Entries for material, mainly journal articles, not held anywhere in Australia, have been compiled from reference sources within the National Library and in formation received from the Library's Liaison Officers in London and New York. Both the bibliography and the exhibition have been designed by Arthur Robinson. Grateful acknowledgment is made to Miss O.M. Roncoroni of Hastings, Sussex and to Mr W. 4 False Parity and the Politics of Amnesia Joshua Lund University of Pittsburgh Dierdra Reber Emory University Within Latin Americanism as we know it, heavily inflected by the memory studies associated with the Southern Cone’s guerras sucias (Dirty Wars), Hernán Vidal is a touchstone figure whose scholarly career is full of landmarks and provocations. A founding member of the Ideologies and Literature project in 1976, Vidal was a protagonist in establishing a forum for renovating the field of Hispanic and Lusophone literary studies through materialist critique, thus taking a substantive step beyond sclerotic aesthetic paradigms and toward the dynamic interdisciplinarity that defines broader Latin Americanism today. Beyond Vidal himself, a short list of his collaborators in Ideologies and Literature reads like a roll call of essential critical work upon which, in one way or another, we all rely: Jean Franco, David Viñas, Antonio Cornejo Polar, Françoise Perus, Edmond Cros, Sara Castro-Klarén, Francine Masiello, John Beverley, Neil Larsen, René Jara, and on and on all the way to Ariel Dorfman himself.1 Ideas were certainly in motion within an emergent Latin Americanism, and Vidal, along with his colleagues at Minnesota, was very much at the center of things. It is not insignificant that this disciplinary regeneration happened in the wake of September 11, 1973, when military forces overthrew a democratically- elected government in Chile, sending shockwaves through the international Left and further hardening the already hard Manichaeism of a global Cold War. By the early 1980s the Ideologies and Literature project would begin to lose steam, but not Vidal himself. -
