34|35 The trail starts from Dorna Candrenilor Commune, at the crossroads between the European road and the secondary road that leads to Poiana Negri village. This road needs to be followed for a few kilometres till it gets to a paved road intersection that ascends to the left, where a pointer indicates the direction to the cloister. This new road is followed and it immediately meets the blue dot hiking sign. To reach the „12 Apostles” Cloister, the pointers to the cloister and hiking sign should be followed, noting that on the last side, the serpentine road climbs quite steep and the slope is quite high. Once up, the route turns left on a grassy road just before the entrance in the cloister courtyard, passes by a windmill and arrives to a resting point and an informative billboard. Here the bikes can be left and riders can walk till they get to the „12 Apostles” cliffs (3 hours round trip walking) with red dot and blue dot hiking signs. Getting back to the resting point, the route turns slightly left to the direction from which it came when it climbed from the cloister, leading the tourist in the forest on a dirt road where he will notice the blue triangle sign. Following this marking, it will get in Sărișor from where one can continue his journey to Neagra Șarului or to Șarul Dornei.

The start of the trail is on Vatra Dornei town bypassing (Chilia Street). From here follow the gravel road that leads to the Acoperământul Maicii Domnului Monastery, situated on the left bank of Bistrița River. After the monastery the road continues smoothly towards Rusca village. Once you get in Rusca, turn left next to the bridge over Bistriţa River. You will basically go on a climbing road that is accompanying Rusca Stream. From here, just follow the red triangle trail sign that will lead you to Giumalău Hut after a sustained climbing. Pay close attention to a 500 meters push bike segment just before reaching the tree line. From the hut you need to follow the dirt road that passes through the mountain meadows. The road overlaps the tourist yellow ribbon hiking trail sign to Ciungilor Clearing. At this point the trail intersects with red ribbon sign. Follow this sign and after a long journey through the forest, you will meet blue ribbon sign (coming from the left), which partially overlaps red cross sign to Gigi Ursu Hut. The road section through the forest is severely damaged because of forestry activities. On certain portions of the road you will need to get off the bike. Starting from Gigi Ursu Hut, the road is mostly descending. The road surface is in good condition. At the first crossroads you have two options: either follow the red cross sign, which descends more steeply through pastures and meadows, or follow the road to the left which descends smoothly to Vatra Dornei, on the Chilia Stream Valley towards the town. 38|39 The starting point of the trail is the centre of Panaci commune that is situated on the left hand of the crossroads right next to the Town Hall, towards Piatra Tăieturii Monastery. The first part of the road (about 2 kilometres) follows Chirileni Valley and is made of concrete. It climbs smoothly among the households. At the end of this segment, the road continues to ascent for several hundred meters along the valley, then starts to climb steeply on the right side of the valley based on the climbing direction. It involves a sustained ascent for more than one kilometre. If you are not in a good shape, you may complete this segment by push bike, but your effort will be amply rewarded with an excellent view over Panaci and Şaru Dornei communes and Călimani Mountains. The rest of the trail climbs gentle towards the monastery, the last part being a bit more challenging. Once you get next to the monastery, on the right side you'll find a large crucifix. One hundred meters further down the road there is a crossroads. To follow the route to Cozăneşti you should turn left. For a brief visit of the monastery, follow the road to the right for a few hundred meters. The trail to Cozăneşti follows the tourist trail (red ribbon sign) that we met at the crossroads. Follow this marked road towards the next bifurcation where the main road deviates to the right, while tourist hiking trail climbs abruptly straight ahead. Adventurous travellers can follow the red ribbon sign, but the trail is affected by forest exploitations in the area. From here on, the road climbs gently for several hundred meters and then descends until a new crossroads with the trail having the red ribbon marking comes from the left. A little further down the road, you will encounter a four-way intersection. Follow the road on the left which will take you to the Cozăneşti Village (Dorna Arinni commune), after a long but very beautiful descent.

The starting point of the trail is the intersection of the European road that leads to Tihuţa Pass with the asphalted road leading to the centre of Coșna commune. Right after the second railway crossing, you get out of the asphalted road and keep going straight ahead on the gravel road. Then follow a long gentle climb along the valley. Continue climbing and go for many intersections with roads on the right, the last one being the one with the forest road that ascends along Făgetul Stream. At the next crossroads, next to a trout farm, turn right at Prislop Stream Valley. The ascent becomes harder, and at a latter point you will encounter a forest road coming from the left. Make sure you keep the direction straight ahead. From here, you have to keep left at the next two crossroads, until you will reach the mountain meadows, above the tree line. The last part of climbing is difficult and quite long. Once you get on the ridge of Suhard Mountains, the gravel road goes to the left, but the route continues ahead and to the right on a dirt (grassy) road, after you pass a gate. Then, the route climbs gently, while down on the valley and you can enjoy the view of Holy Cross Monastery and Ciocăneşti village lower on the valley. After about 2-3 kilometres of slow climbing, the road heavily descends to the right, while on the left part of the trail, at a few hundred meters below the road, you can see a sheepfold. Right after this, the slope becomes soft and you will continue to descend slowly on Plaiul Suhard. The trail continues through the forest and then it slightly ascends, leaving Tarniţa Mountain on the left and goes out of the forest after a short section of difficult climbing. From this point on, the road descends quickly into a broader saddle with many sheepfolds. Once you get to the sheepfolds' area, the road begins to climb gently, avoiding Jacob Peak on the right, and enters again the forest. However, you should be careful as the trail turns left on some barely visible traces, shortly before entering the wood. Just a few meters after we left the other road, the route becomes visible again and begins to descend quite steeply on a forest road that is in a poor condition. The right route to take is showed by the blue ribbon trail sign that will accompany you to the sheepfold bellow Ouşoru Peak. Once you get here, you will go round the sheepfold on your right, and you start descending towards Dorna Candrenilor. The right route is showed by the blue cross sign, but the descent is quite demanding because of the poor condition of the road surface. 550 m 550 5 hours 5 medium Dorna Candrenilor - Coşna - Româneşti - Tătaru - Tătaru - Româneşti - Coşna - Candrenilor Dorna 59, 1 km 1 59, asphalt road, gravel road, The trail starts at Dorna Candrenilor Town Hall. Orchards and clearings allow excellent views of the resort, as well as of the dwellings scattered alongside the rivers Bistrita Aurie and Dorna. In about 20 minutes after having left the quarter, tourists will reach an open space of clearings abundant with bilberries, while raspberry bushes will stretch alongside the fringe of the forest. Upon descending the maximum altitude spot, tourists will catch a glimpse of the Suhard summit and the three peaks, Runc - 1149 m, Ouşoru - 1639 m, Fărăoane - 1715 m, in the South-West.

Nature and Fitness Park is the excellent choice for leisure and amusement, sports and various outdoor activities. The Park consists of a network of 4 North bound Walking with different degrees of difficulty and a very precise and modern signposting system that indicates the direction and the distance left to your destination. At each of the two starting points – the parking lot in front of the Sucevița Monastery and the Poiana Mărului crossroads – there are two billboards providing information on the types of sports that can be practiced on the trails, including recommended warming up drills, altitude and degree of difficulty. 1. Neagu I Time: 20 minutes Distance: 1, 5 km Altitude difference: 22 m Difficulty level: easy

This is an accessible trail that starts in the parking lot in front of Sucevița Monastery. The trail crosses the national road on the pedestrian crossing, reaches the entrance of the monastery and follows the signal post to the right, going around the wall and the North-West tower. The climb starts after going right, around the fence that surrounds the village church and cemetery. The slightly steep path takes a left turn, along the fence of Sucevița Monastery. Visitors can enjoy the sloping landscape watched over by the Furcoi Peak in the north. The trail descends on the Neagu forest road that goes around the monastery farm grounds, with a functional sheep cot on the right side of the trail. The National Road DN17A starts at the end of the forest road. The trail crosses it and runs for another 250 m, returning to the starting point. 2. Neagu

Time: 40-50 minutes Distance: 2,7 km Altitude difference: 89 m Difficulty level: easy This trail is an extension of the previous trail detailed above (Neagu 1), and allows visitors to enjoy and take photos of a stunningly beautiful landscape. The difference from the first trail consists in climbing the Neagu hilltop that lies in the south of the monastery. The trail reaches the south-west corner of the fence that surrounds the village church and cemetery and goes straight ahead on the path uphill. Upon reaching the top of the hill, after a light 10 minute climb, the trail takes a slight turn to the north, allowing hikers to marvel at the scenery. The outstanding setting offers a bird's eye view of the Sucevița Monastery as well as the valley along where lies the village. The valley of Bercheza Creek lies in the north-west. The trail descends on the Neagu forest road that goes around the monastery farm grounds, with a functional sheep cot on the right side of the trail. The National Road DN17A starts at the end of the forest road. The trail crosses it and terminates within 250 m, at the starting point.

3. Furcoi

Time: 1 hour and 30 minutes Distance: 5 km Altitudine difference: 211 m Difficulty level: difficult The trail starts in the parking lot in front of Suceviţa Monastery, and follows the concrete road along the Bercheza Creek for about 1,3 km. The climb starts before reaching the bridge that leads to the forest road, and follows a footpath on the right. The trail reaches a road that was used years ago for transporting building materials for the construction of the retreat that can be seen from the starting point. The climb has an average degree of difficulty but it is worth the effort as, upon reaching the top of the hill, within 500 meters to the south, visitors can wonder at a stunningly beautiful panorama. You will enjoy a bird's eye 60|61 view of Suceviţa Monastery and the valley that descends to the Rădăuți Depression in the east. The trail descends on the south side of the slope and follows the footstep for about 150 meters, then makes a left turn on the signalled path and reaches the Rotar forest road. After crossing Suceviţa Creek, the trail reaches the DN17A road, next to the Town hall precinct. The return to the starting point is quite easy, on a special pedestrian walk on the right side of the road.

4. Drăgușin Hut Time: 1-2 hours Distance: 7,5 km Altitudine difference: 119 m Difficulty level: medium

This is an exceptionally beautiful North bound Walking trail, of average to low difficulty. It starts in the west of the Sucevița village, at Poiana Mărului, where the signalling billboard is located. The trail forward coincides with the way back, on a cobblestone road, well-preserved and maintained by the Forestry Board, as it facilitates timber exploitation. The lean ridges of the hills can be seen in the distance, as the air is purified by a soft breeze coming from a crystal clear creek where visitors can catch a glimpse of the trout. There are several stops along the trail where hikers can rest or exercise. Wild berries, raspberries, blueberries or bilberries are scattered towards the end of the trail, for visitors to enjoy on a well-deserved break before returning to the starting point. Note: The north bound walking and mountain bike trails (Vatra Dornei, Gura Humorului, Sucevița 1 and 2) were made as part of the „Nature Active Parks” (N.A.P.) project. Rarău Massif is located in the northern part of the Eastern Carpathians, in Suceava County. Câmpulung Moldovenesc lies at the foot of Rarău Massif, Pojorâta locality in the northwest and the defile from Zugreni and Chiril village in the south. The ground on which the trails are situated is part of the Transylvanian nappe, they are made from the same limestone that is found all over Transylvania, as well as in Banat. The trails are either natural or are equipped in accordance with U.I.A.A. You can climb at the maximum altitude found in Rarău (1650 m) on an average of six months per year. The best time to do that is at the end of March, beginning of April and the first half of May. June and July are the wettest months, as well as the warmest, thus the possibility of practicing climbing in extreme weather conditions is higher. From mid-August till November, precipitations are reduced, and the weather is great for practicing this type of active tourism, even if the temperature decreases. (800 m (800

AND, FISHING HUNTING

For historians and men of culture, hunting means past, tradition and civilization, a tradition that leaves behind millennia of sober experience. From the Neanderthal man (known for its hunting abilities) to the present day, the evolution of hunting activities closely blended with the evolution of human society, hallmarking the world's universal culture and the hunting culture. Today, hunting is a conscious activity by exploiting a sustainable renewable natural resource. In other words, hunting is seen as a rational activity that is undertaken in order to maintain nature balance between species of game and predator. FISHING

Fishing, together with hunting, has stood for the simplest and at the same time the safest way to obtain food since ancient times. Nowadays, with the passage of time and the evolution of society, fishing activity has shifted from food production to an activity for recreational purposes. Fishing is considered one of the most popular hobbies around the world, given that is a very relaxing outdoor activity that brings many benefits to its lovers. In Suceava County there are a relatively large number of ponds and lakes where one can fish, and four major rivers (Moldova, Suceava, , Bistrița). STANDING WATERS Suceava River On its way to the confluence with Siret River, of almost 200 km, Suceava River runs through various forms of relief (e.g. 84|85 mountains, plains, hills). This is the reason why it hosts various species of fish starting from trout, European chub, barbel (including the black and blue one), common nase, broad snout, hake, perch, asp, pike and even (rarely) perch. The asp, the pike and the perch mostly can be seen downstream of Burdujeni to Lisaura at R o ş c a n i o r a t t h e confluence with Siret River. Crossing Suceava (Iţcani and Burdujeni neighborhood - at a rate of approx. 12 cm per second), the river is the main attraction for the anglers in the city. Those willing to have a nice and quiet fishing party should avoid areas such as the bridge at Iţcani (including upstream and downstream along several kilometers, even if they have good fishing spots) and look for other fishery several kilometers downstream from Vereşti to the inlets into Siret River. Both stationary lovers (broad snout, hake, chub, barbel), spinning lovers (trout - upstream, asp, pike, perch), biting lovers (trout - upstream, chub) as well as those fishing barbell and carp and can see in Suceava River a solution to escape from everyday life. Siret River In Suceava County, Siret River has two barrier lakes offering to all kind of anglers the possibility of an exciting fishing party. Rogojeşti Accumulation (34.9 million cubic meters of water, approximately 850 ha), located in the north-eastern county, near the border with Ukraine has a maximum depth of 8 m and an average depth of 1.5. Due to its great number of predators (perch, rapacious carp, pike), the accumulation hosted several competitions of spinning in the recent years. Bucecea Accumulation (4.99 million cubic meters of water) opened in 1976, lies on Siret River between Şerbăneşti, Slobozia, Bereşti, Ionăşeni and Vârfu Câmpului. As to the species of fish that can be found, we point strictly the variety, but not the frequency or size of specimens encountered, from common nase to chub, barbel, perch, asp, carp, crucian carp, rudd, pike or perch.

Moldavia River Moldavia River is one of Suceava's largest hydrographic basins. Springing from Gura Humor, it is rich in species such as: trout, barbel, and broad snout (present more often downstream H u m o r ) . S m a l l s p e c i e s a r e represented in great number by minnow, bleak, belda, gudgeon, loach and grig (species protected by European and Romanian legislation). As far as the density of the species is concerned, the minnow is very well represented, holding the first place (53%) and being the main source of food for the trout, followed by barbell, belda and chub. The chub is an omnivorous species with high ecological plasticity, successfully competing the species characteristic of the area. Downstream of Gura Humor, with the transition to the hilly area, Moldavia's riverbed widens considerably and fishes such as the broad snout, chub and barbell can be found.

Bistriţa River Bistrița is the second largest river in Suceava, after Moldavia River. Springing from Vatra Dornei, where it meets Dorna River, it is called the „Golden Bistrița” River. The river and its surrounding area were declared a site of European Community importance, being a highly conducive environment to the development of trout and grayling, especially the more so as, until it reaches Cârlibaba, the river enjoys the fresh and wild air of spruce and pine forests away for human civilization. In addition, between Cârlibaba and Iacobeni in Ciocăneşti (110 km from Suceava, 21 km from Vatra Dornei), the Trout Festival, the only of its kind in Europe takes place every year.
