Summary of Professional Activities In September 2006 I joined the Department of Clinical Pharmacy faculty as an Assistant Adjunct Professor, Step 1. My appointment became full-time in September 2007. I was advanced to Associate Professor in Residence Step 3 in July 2016. • Professional recognition: I have presented my work at the international, national, regional and local level; this includes two international presentations in 2016 and an invitation from the National Cancer Institute to attend a seminar on population cancer control strategies. • National and international expertise: Through my research on tobacco control I have been asked to serve on multiple grant review committees. In 2014, I became Associate Director of US Cochrane West, a branch of the Cochrane Collaboration. In 2013-2015 I continued my service as a peer reviewer for the American Cancer Society. In 2014 I served on an ad hoc peer review committee for the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). • Research communication: I continue to attend professional conferences to disseminate my research to the academic communities in public health and political science. Much of this work has led to later publications. • Interdisciplinary emphasis: As a translational researcher, I engage in professional activities across academic disciplines, including pharmacy, political science, public health, public policy, medicine, and law. In 2014, I joined the Editorial Board of Health Promotion Practice. I continue to regularly review manuscripts for other journals in multiple disciplines. • Publicity: I give regular interviews to print journalists on issues relating to health care reform and tobacco control. In 2016, I consulted with the California Department of Pesticide Regulation (Thomas Cate) about applying standards for maximum residue levels for tobacco when regulating cannabis, completed a television interview with Thuy Vu at KQED on increasing the minimum age of legal access for tobacco in California to 21, and was featured in the US AHRQ article alert.

Teaching Narrative My teaching contributions build on my core research strengths: health policy and research design. My teaching hours increased substantially in recent years, from 35 formal course hours in 2012-2013 to 150 formal course hours (estimated) in 2016-2017. This includes a new appointment as an online instructor for the UCSF-UC Hastings Masters in Health Policy and Law program. I have also increased my mentoring of students pursuing intensive research projects. • Recent course coordination responsibilities o Research project seminar: In Winter 2011, I began teaching the first term of the HSPR pathway seminar (CP153.10A, 1 unit), focusing on research design and project development; this course is now the second in a three-course series. o Health policy: In Fall 2014, I took over as co-coordinator with Tina Brock of the core curriculum course in Health Policy (CP133, 3 units). o Health policy & law; Health policy: From 2016-2019, I developed an online Health Policy course for the UCSF-UC Hastings Masters in Health Policy & Law program (3 units). The program launched in August 2016 and ran through 2019 (currently on hiatus). o Nursing: Theories of the health policy process: In Fall 2016 I took over course coordination responsibilities for Ruth Malone during her one-year sabbatical. • Other instruction o Survey design: From 2010-2014, I gave a guest presentation in HSPR Epidemiology course (CP156) on survey research and design. In 2015, when this course was removed from the School of Pharmacy, I began presenting this material to students in CP124, Study Design. o Leadership and negotiation: In 2014 and 2015, I presented material on negotiation and directed a group exercise in the Pharmacy Leadership elective (CP154.01). o Collaboration and communication: In 2015-2016 I directed inter-professional education seminars and served as a small group advisor in Topics in Pharmacy Administration (CP134).

o Introduction to pharmacy pathways and careers: In 2013 I served as a co-coordinator for the HSPR section of CP155. During three of the ten weeks of instruction, we provided first-year students with information about the pathway and invited graduates to speak about their current careers. • Mentoring o Research preceptor: I currently serve as a research advisor for pharmacy students, postdocs in the School of Medicine, and junior faculty. o Recent awards received by student and postdoctoral advisees: . 2015: Pathway Project Grant (Sung) . 2016: Pathway Project Grant (Pasetes); Dean’s Pathway Project Award (Sung); Chih Foundation Research and Publication Award (Sung) . 2017: Pathway Project Grant (Pimentel); Dean’s Pathway Project Award (Pasetes) . 2018: Summer Dental Student Research Fellowship (Lee) o HSPR mentoring: After the Winter term research seminar for HSPR students, I continue to advise 4-12 pathway students annually through scheduled summer meetings, and informally during the fall instructional block. o School of Pharmacy ad hoc mentoring: Every year I meet with one-on-one with students through the ACCP Coffee Break program and complete student CV reviews. o Campus advising: In addition to formally mentoring postdoctoral scholars in the Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education, I have advised others in the center on a regular basis during monthly seminars where they present their research. In 2015, I also served as a mentor during the UCSF Postdoc Speed Mentoring Event.

Research Program and Creative Activity My research focus is the translation of research into policy. I am especially interested in the political and marketing activities of industries implicated in the spread of non-communicable diseases, which include tobacco, pharmaceuticals, marijuana, alcohol, and food. My long-term goal is to develop methods to increase the role of evidence in making public health policy decisions. My recent work addresses tobacco control in vulnerable populations, combined use of tobacco and marijuana, the spread of local and state ordinances addressing tobacco and new tobacco and marijuana delivery systems, and the health effects of these laws. As a translational researcher, I have published in journals of multiple disciplines, including law, medicine, pharmacy, political science, public health, and public policy. I am increasingly focused on developing the work of students and postdoctoral fellows.

Additional Relevant Information Statement of personal circumstances: In 2013 I was struck by a car and seriously injured. Due to my need for multiple orthopedic surgeries in 2013, 2014, and 2015, I was away from work on disability leave for several months during those years, which reduced my research productivity.
