Spinning Tree announces upcoming season Spinning Tree Theatre announces 2018-19 season Spinning Tree Theatr Spinning Tree Theatre proudly announces the 2018-19 season of plays and musicals. Artistic Director Michael Grayman- Parkhurst: “Spinning Tree’s eighth season deepens into our examination of the human condition by shining a light on what it means to live authentically and without apology. We’ll travel from turn-of-the-20th-century New England to 1937 New York City, travel the world through the eyes of young women and land in 1980’s North Eastern England. And while noticing differences in each other culturally and historically, we’ll be reminded that the same stars look down on all of us.” DADDY LONG LEGS (August 17 – September 2). The romantic and charming new Off-Broadway musical is from the Tony Award- winning director of Les Misérables (John Caird, book) and the Tony-nominated composer of Jane Eyre (Paul Gordon, music and lyrics). Based on Jean Webster’s 1912 novel, this heartwarming Cinderella story is about a witty and winsome young woman and her mysterious benefactor. Kansas City premiere! THE NANCE (November 2-18). Douglas Carter Beane’s 2013 Broadway play (with original music by Glen Kelly) originally starred Nathan Lane. New York City’s Mayor LaGuardia wants to clean up the city before the 1937 World’s Fair, and his target is burlesque. A nance was a stereotypical gay character and master of comic double entendre, typically played by a straight actor. What happens when our nance is gay…and has fallen in love? Kansas City premiere! EMOTIONAL CREATURE (January 17 – February 3, 2019). Eve Ensler (The Vagina Monologues) adapts her bestselling book subtitled The Secret Life of Girls Around the World into a unique theatrical experience: a fierce collage of monologues, chat sessions, songs (original music by Charl-Johan Lingenfelder) and dance. A call, a reckoning, an act of empowerment for women and teen girls…and potentially a wake-up call for men and teen boys. Kansas City premiere! BILLY ELLIOT (April 4-20, 2019). Elton John (music) and Lee Hall (book and lyrics) adapted the Universal Pictures/Studio Canal film into the winner of 10 Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Follow Billy’s journey from boxing ring to ballet class, where he discovers a passion for dance that unites his family, inspires his community and changes his life forever. “The Nance” TCA Panelist Biographies Douglas Carter Beane’s credits on Broadway include Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella (Tony Award nomination), The Nance (nominated for five Tony Awards and two Drama Desk Awards), Lysistrata Jones (Tony Award nomination), Sister Act (Tony Award nomination), the stage adaptation of the film Xanadu (Outer Critics Circle & HX Awards for Best Musical, Drama Desk Award for Best Book, and four Tony nominations including Best Musical) and The Little Dog Laughed (Tony Award; West End Olivier Award nomination). His other plays include As Bees In Honey Drown (Outer Critics Circle John Gassner Award), Mr. and Mrs. Fitch, Music From a Sparkling Planet, The Country Club, Advice From a Caterpiller, The Cartells, and Mondo Drama. He has written the libretto for the Metropolitan Opera's Die Fledermaus, which is currently in their repertory, and his ballet, Artists and Models, 1929 is a part of the dance show In Your Arms. He wrote the film adaptation of his play Advice From a Caterpiller as well as the screenplay of To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything, Julie Newmar. Cooley San Francisco, CA (August 10, 2015) — This October, New Conservatory Theatre Center sets the stage for Douglas Carter Beane’s sophisticated wit and thrilling theatrical ambition with the regional premiere of The Nance. After hit productions of Beane’s The Little Dog Laughed and As Bees in Honey Drown, NCTC bring his latest and “finest” (Time Out NY), what The New York Times calls “a heartfelt new play set in the twilight of burlesque.” This “bold, brave play” (Backstage) – which debuted at Lincoln Center Theater on Broadway in 2013 – recreates the naughty, raucous world of burlesque's heyday and tells the backstage story of headliner Chauncey Miles, who plays “the nance,” a flamboyantly effeminate stock character – usually played by a straight man. Set amid Mayor Fiorello La Guardia’s crackdown on burlesque before the 1939 World’s Fair, a time when it was easy to play gay yet dangerous to be gay, Chauncey's uproarious antics on the stage stand out in marked contrast to his offstage life. I am drawn to works that are relevant, imaginative, honest and inclusive. I view the medium of theatre as a necessary tool in debating societal reform, promoting communication and exploring our shared humanity. My goals for the future are to continue to direct a variety of plays with diverse voices, experiment with new styles of storytelling and improve education, access and outreach between theatres and communities. In Dallas, I’ve created a theatre group, Leos Ensemble, which focuses on producing plays with international themes.
