Spinning Tree Theatre announces 2018-19 season

Spinning Tree Theatr Spinning Tree Theatre proudly announces the 2018-19 season of plays and musicals. Artistic Director Michael Grayman- Parkhurst: “Spinning Tree’s eighth season deepens into our examination of the human condition by shining a light on what it means to live authentically and without apology. We’ll travel from turn-of-the-20th-century New England to 1937 New York City, travel the world through the eyes of young women and land in 1980’s North Eastern England. And while noticing differences in each other culturally and historically, we’ll be reminded that the same stars look down on all of us.”

DADDY LONG LEGS (August 17 – September 2). The romantic and charming new Off-Broadway musical is from the Tony Award- winning director of Les Misérables (, book) and the Tony-nominated composer of Jane Eyre (Paul Gordon, music and lyrics). Based on Jean Webster’s 1912 novel, this heartwarming Cinderella story is about a witty and winsome young woman and her mysterious benefactor. Kansas City premiere!

THE NANCE (November 2-18). ’s 2013 Broadway play (with original music by Glen Kelly) originally starred . New York City’s Mayor LaGuardia wants to clean up the city before the 1937 World’s Fair, and his target is burlesque. A nance was a stereotypical gay character and master of comic double entendre, typically played by a straight actor. What happens when our nance is gay…and has fallen in love? Kansas City premiere!

EMOTIONAL CREATURE (January 17 – February 3, 2019). Eve Ensler (The Vagina Monologues) adapts her bestselling book subtitled The Secret Life of Girls Around the World into a unique theatrical experience: a fierce collage of monologues, chat sessions, songs (original music by Charl-Johan Lingenfelder) and dance. A call, a reckoning, an act of empowerment for women and teen girls…and potentially a wake-up call for men and teen boys. Kansas City premiere!

BILLY ELLIOT (April 4-20, 2019). Elton John (music) and (book and lyrics) adapted the Universal Pictures/Studio Canal film into the winner of 10 , including Best Musical. Follow Billy’s journey from boxing ring to ballet class, where he discovers a passion for dance that unites his family, inspires his community and changes his life forever. Time Magazine’s Best Musical of the Decade.
