    The Transmission of Ptolemy’s Terms: An Historical Overview, Comparison and Interpretation _________________________________________________________________ Deborah Houlding Abstract The planetary rulership of terms has always been a contentious issue. Astrologers such as Ptolemy and Valens recorded the heated disagreements of their time, and demonstrated the differences between competing national ‘systems’. The Egyptian system was clearly predominant in the preserved records of classical astrologers, but by the end of the medieval period its popularity waned as support moved to the table ‘deemed worthy of record’ by the illustrious Ptolemy. Supposed to have been his preferred choice, this table of ‘Ptolemaic terms’ was later said to have settled all disagreements and to have helped standardize European technique. Even if this were true (it is not), the inconsistency by which the Ptolemaic terms are recorded makes this table the most problematic and controversial of all! What the inconsistencies are, and why they exist, is the focus of this paper. Introduction With the renewed interest in Hellenistic techniques, many modern astrologers who employ the planetary terms are choosing to adopt the older, Egyptian system, which was evidently favoured by early classical astrologers. By far the majority, however, employ the so-called ‘Ptolemaic terms’ as set out in William Lilly’s 17th century textbook Christian Astrology.1 The continued reproduction of Lilly’s text and the influence it maintains upon astrologers studying traditional techniques2 has given this particular rendering of the terms a position of such authority that even software products which allow their computation are 1 Lilly, William, Christian Astrology (London, 1647) [hereafter CA]. Mercury is never appearing to be more than one sign from the Sun, in either direction; thus it is from the ancient years considered to rule the two signs on either side of Leo and Cancer: Virgo and Gemini. When diurnal, Mercury is ruling Gemini, while when nocturnal, he is domicile in Virgo. Trishana Ramluckan Submitted as part of a taught degree of Master of Arts in Classical Civilisation at the Programme of Classics, University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban. 2005 11 Abstract The Ancient Indians and Greeks had similar beliefs in the concepts of magic, superstition, and astrology. First I will look briefly at the beliefs of the ancient Greeks and the main astrological text- the Tetrabiblos of Claudius Ptolemy. Ptolemy moves away from the scientific account that he provides us in his Almagest, to defining astrology as an art acquired from the observation of the movements of the heavenly bodies. The main argument however is based on the fact that Ptolemy uses an almost apologetic tone in his defence of the Tetrabiblos. Whereas the ancient Indians appeared to be strong believers in astrology, the ancient Greeks always sought to justify it in terms of science. To analyse this concept in depth I will provide a comparative study of both these belief systems. But whereas the Greeks distinguished astrology from astronomy, in the Vedic tradition astrology consisted of observable science as well as mythological and magical elements. Some consideration must therefore be given to astronomical aspects of this tradition in drawing a comparison between the two. Astrology was prevalent in ancient India a long time prior to the writing of the Surya Siddhanta or any other astronomical text. The Surya Siddhanta is often held to be the main text on Indian astronomy as it tries to address the reasons why certain religious practices were performed at those specific times.

This study examines the thirteenth-century astrologer Guido Bonatti’s Liber Astronomicus as a case study to investigate one aspect of the many practical applications of astrology in the later Middle Ages. Specifically, it looks at the application of military astrology to analyze Bonatti’s use of his source material in relation to his own practice. The dissertation develops a methodology to discern the astrologer’s practice from his textual inheritance. Bonatti was possibly the most important astrologer of the high middle ages. His work was an encyclopedic, yet detailed survey of the entire field of astrological study in the Europe of his day. He acknowledged his Arab sources but was not merely a compiler of their material. Like many of his European contemporaries in other fields such as Thomas Aquinas, Albertus Magnus and Roger Bacon, Bonatti put his own stamp on the field of astrology. Staying within the basic traditions as he inherited them, he systematized and expanded often terse material, and frequently innovated in certain applications of astrology. By close and detailed examinations of Bonatti’s text and comparison with his sources, we can see the changes that reflect his personal experience which in turn caused him to alter and emend the tradition.
