He spoke one day to the Daughters of Charity of Sr. Marie-Joseph from Etampes, one of the first sisters, and said of her: “This good daughter may be called a martyr of charity. Do you think that the only martyrs are those who spill their blood for the faith? For example, those daughters who went to find the queen, that is a martyrdom; for, while they did not die, they were exposed to the danger of death, and they did that willingly for the love of God; like so many good Daughters who have given their lives in the service of the poor, that is a martyrdom.” 1 Sr Rosalie was of that kind. -

RYBOLT, C.M. (A conference prepared for the participants in CIF, Centre International de Formation, held in Paris, France; revised and updated.) INTRODUCTION The purpose of this week of the program is to be faithful to paragraph 50 of the Constitutions, which instructs us about our Vincentian Family. 50. We should cherish devotion to Saint Vincent and to the canonized and beatified members of the Vincentian Family. We should constantly return to the heritage of our Founder, expressed in his writings and in the tradition of the Congregation, that we may learn to love what he loved and practice what he taught. As you can see, we are really interested in just the first sentence of this paragraph. Nevertheless it tells us a great deal. We could approach this subject hagiographically: that is, in the worst sense of the term, to look at these saints and blesseds as the models of every Vincentian virtue, searching their lives for examples of these, marveling at them, and drawing out lesson for our personal daily living. You are certainly free to do so, and during these hours together, I will display several items of interest which could be read, as well as a bibliography. On the other hand, I am going to approach the subject historically, particularly by giving the historical context in which these confreres of ours lived and worked. -

Why Catholics Wear Scapulars by Ken Litchfield The wearing of a small square Scapular is a popular devotion among many Catholics. Some know the teaching behind it and some wear it by family tradition. The small square Scapular is based on the large scarf-like Scapular worn over the shoulders by religious brothers and sisters. The word Scapular comes from the Latin word scapula for the shoulder bone. Lay Catholics often wear the small Scapular which has 2 pieces of wool cloth connected by 2 cords to imitate the religious brothers and sisters. There may be a picture or some brief writing on the back of the wool cloth to remind the wearer why they are wearing it. The teaching behind the various Scapulars is to remind us to lead Holy lives. Catholics are not required to wear a scapular but many who know the teaching behind it do. The Brown Scapular Our Lady of Mount Carmel appeared to the Carmelite monk Saint Simon Stock in 1251 and presented him with a brown wool scapular, saying, “Whoever dies invested with this Scapular shall be preserved from the eternal flames. It is a sign of salvation, a sure safeguard in danger, a pledge of peace and of my special protection until the end of the ages.” Any Catholic can be enrolled in the Brown Scapular. Many children are enrolled after their First Communion, although there is no age requirement. To gain the promises of the Brown Scapular, one must be enrolled or invested in the Brown Scapular by a Catholic priest or deacon. -

PASTOR’S MEANDERINGS 13 – 14 JULY 2019 FIFTEENTH SUNDAY ORDINARY TIME (C) SUNDAY REFLECTION The word ‘communion’ aptly resumes the meaning of today’s celebration. By loving, caring for others we commune, we are united with God. In Jesus, who is one with God, the whole of creation communes with God. The Church as Jesus’s body communes with Him. Our communion with Christ in the sacrament of the Eucharist is, therefore, the supreme expression and realization of God’s plan for the universe. At this moment let us meditate on this fact and resolve to lead our daily lives accordingly, trying always to behave in a Spirit of communion with others, to made real the unity of all things in Jesus. A woman in a red car one day drove up to a toll-booth and handed the attendant six tickets with the remark that she would like to pay for the next six cars. As each car stopped, the driver was told that a lady in a red car had paid their toll. She was inspired by a sentence written by Anne Herbert ‘Practice random kindness and senseless acts of beauty.’ Anne believed that random kindness is capable of generating a tidal wave just as random violence is. Could I try to do something like this and break through the safe routine of my life? STEWARDSHIP: The good Samaritan was also a good steward, giving his time and his treasure to meet his neighbor’s need. Scapular By Jason Paul Bourgeois, Ph.D., Librarian-Theologian/Assistant Professor Marian Library-International Marian Research Institute, University of Dayton A scapular is a sacramental garment of the Catholic church, usually consisting of two pieces of sewn cloth attached by strings and worn over the shoulders with one piece hanging over the chest and the other hanging over the back. The scapular was originally a component of some religious habits, the set of garments worn by members of a religious order, but later a smaller version (usually one inch by two inches) began to be worn under the clothes by laypersons who wished to associate with a particular religious order. The most famous scapular is the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel (q.v.) The Brothers of Our Lady of Mount Carmel (commonly referred to as Carmelites) were originally founded as an order of hermits that lived together on Mount Carmel in Israel in the early 1200s. -

Five Faces of Rosalie Rendu Robert P. Maloney, CM at the Motherhouse of the Daughters of Charity, Paris, France, March 25, 2003 Rosalie Rendu was an extraordinary woman. Even though many of the biographies written about her are poor in quality.[1]] Rosalie’s energy, creativity, fidelity, courage shine out in the accounts of those who knew her.[2] Long before her death she had become famous. An immense crowd, estimated at 40-50 thousand people, from all strata of society flocked to her funeral on February 9, 1856. As we look forward to her beatification, I think of Shakespeare’s eloquent words: When she shall die, Take her and cut her out in little stars, And she will make the face of heaven so fine That all the world will be in love with night...[3] The Church beatifies and canonizes men and women precisely for that reason: that they might shine out like stars for us, that in the midst of darkness we might see, in their example, what it really means to be holy. At just 15 years of age she set off for Paris. There she spent more than 50 years of her life in the Mouffetard neighborhood. -

BIOGRAPHICAL APPENDIX Aberdeen George Hamilton-Gordon, earl of (1784–1860), was the Foreign Secretary under Robert Peel 1841–46 and a close friend of Guizot and of Princess Lieven. He acted as go- between for Louis-Philippe and the comte de Chambord in 1849–50. He was the Prime Minister of Great Britain in 1852–55. Affre Denis-Auguste (1793–1848) was the archbishop of Paris from 1840. He rallied to the Republic quickly in 1848 but was mortally wounded when he tried to parlay with insur- gents during the June Days. d’Agoult Marie (1805–76) published her Histoire de la Révolution de 1848 under the name of Daniel Stern. Arago François (1786–1853) was an astronomer and member of the Provisional Government and Executive Commission. Barante Prosper de (1782–1866) was a member of the Doctrinaires in the Restoration and prefect during the July Monarchy as well as ambassador in Turin and Saint Petersburg. Baroche Jules (1802–70) was the Minister of the Interior from March 1850, actively supported the electoral reform law of 31 May 1850. He resigned when Changarnier was dis- missed but was made Minister of Foreign Affairs in April 1851, only to resign in October in protest against the President’s attempt to revoke the law of 31 May. After the coup he became President of the Council of State. Barrot Odilon (1791–1873) was prefect of the Seine after the 1830 Revolution. Our Lady of Mount Carmel Feast Day: July 16 The Story of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Hermits lived on Mount Carmel near the Fountain of Elijah in northern Israel in the 12th century. They had a chapel dedicated to Our Lady. By the 13th century they became known as “Brothers of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.” They soon celebrated a special Mass and Office in honor of Mary. In 1726, it became a celebration of the universal Church under the title of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. For centuries the Carmelites have seen themselves as specially related to Mary. Their great saints and theologians have promoted devotion to her and often championed the mystery of her Immaculate Conception. Saint Teresa of Avila called Carmel “the Order of the Virgin.” Saint John of the Cross credited Mary with saving him from drowning as a child, leading him to Carmel, and helping him escape from prison. Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus believed that Mary cured her from illness. On her First Communion day, Thérèse dedicated her life to Mary. During the last days of her life she frequently spoke of Mary. There is a tradition —which may not be historical —that Mary appeared to Saint Simon Stock, a leader of the Carmelites, and gave him a scapular, telling him to promote devotion to it. The scapular is a modified version of Mary’s own garment. It symbolizes her special protection and calls the wearers to consecrate themselves to her in a special way. The scapular reminds us of the gospel call to prayer and penance—a call that Mary models in a splendid way.
