Scoping Study Into the Lack of Women Screenwriters in the UK
Scoping Study into the Lack of Women Screenwriters in the UK A report presented to the UK Film Council Scoping Study into the Lack of Women Screenwriters in the UK A report presented to the UK Film Council Alice Sinclair Emma Pollard Helen Wolfe Prepared for UK Film Council by: INSTITUTE FOR EMPLOYMENT STUDIES Mantell Building University of Sussex Falmer Brighton BN1 9RF UK Tel. + 44 (0) 1273 686751 Fax + 44 (0) 1273 690430 http://www.employment‐studies.co.uk Copyright © 2006 UK Film Council No part of this publication may be reproduced or used in any form by any means— graphic, electronic or mechanical including photocopying, recording, taping or information storage or retrieval systems—without prior permission in writing from the UK Film Council. Foreword from the UK Film Council On behalf of the UK Film Council, I am pleased to present the findings of this scoping study into the lack of women screenwriters in the UK. The UK Film Council, as the Government‐backed strategic agency for film, has a responsibility to ensure that there is a strong evidence‐base to support our activities. Where there are gaps in the research, it is important that we identify these gaps and address them. There are many myths and theories about the position of women screenwriters in the UK. It may come as no surprise to learn that women are under‐represented, but the extent of the imbalance, and the reasons behind it, have never before been examined in any detail. The Institute for Employment Studies has brought together, for the first time, academic research and up‐to‐date industry data to produce an in‐depth, well‐ conducted report. -

Under the Skin Production Notes
UNDER THE SKIN PRODUCTION NOTES A film by Jonathan Glazer Running time: 107 minutes FilmNation Press Contacts: Selena Saldana, [email protected]. +1-917-484-8914 Sarah Jarvis, [email protected], +1-917-484-8916 SYNOPSIS: UNDER THE SKIN is the story of an alien in human form. Part road movie, part science fiction, part real, it’s a film about seeing our world through alien eyes. Into the Unknown: The Making Of UNDER THE SKIN From Book to Script In the space of 12 years and three feature films, Jonathan Glazer has established himself as a director of style and innovation. His debut, Sexy Beast, invigorated the British gangster movie by infusing a tense London heist story with dark shades of Jacobean tragedy, a feat achieved largely by the unexpected and inspired casting of Sir Ben Kingsley as the film's sociopathic villain. The follow-up, Birth, took similar liberties, this time with the ghost story, starring Nicole Kidman as a woman who believes her late husband has been reincarnated as young boy. So it is perhaps significant that Under the Skin, which began development even before Birth, is another reinvention of genre. Based on Michel Faber's 2000 novel of the same name, it tells the story of a predatory female who cruises the streets of Scotland looking for men to seduce. Faber's novel is paced thoughtfully and slowly, until it is revealed that the heroine is an alien, looking for suitable specimens that can be turned into a type of meat, to be sent back to her starving homeland. -

Damsels in Distress? Women Film Directors and British Cinema Funding Post- Millennium
Damsels in Distress? Women film directors and British cinema funding post- millennium By Stella Hockenhull Keywords: female directors, Women in the Workplace, Directors UK, UK Film Council (UKFC), Christine Langan, Tessa Ross, Tanya Seghatchian On 28 March 2013, a small group of British female academics submitted written evidence of their findings to a Commons Select Committee concerning the dearth of British women film and television directors within the industry.1 Entitled Women in the Workplace (Conley et al. 2013), part of that report contained evidence from Directors UK, an organization formed in 2008 that calls itself ‘the voice of British film and television directors’ (Conley et al. 2013). A professional association with over 4,500 members, Directors UK explicitly expressed concern over the paucity of female film and television directors within the British media industry, although the period from 2000 to 2010 saw a rise in female film directors, reaching a peak in 2009, when they accounted for 17.2 per cent of British film directors overall.2 The increase coincides with the initiation of the UK Film Council (UKFC) and its changing policies concerning the encouragement of greater diversity and equal opportunities within the film industry. Within a historical context and in light of funding and UKFC policy, this article analyses its impact on women film directors in British cinema post-millennium. That women film directors in Britain (and indeed internationally) constitute a small percentage of the workforce is not a new phenomenon; indeed, during the preceding century women were also under-represented within the UK film industry. Before World War II there was little opportunity for women directors, particularly in directing fiction films and, according to Sue Harper, ‘[i]n the 1930s, women experienced extreme difficulties breaking into the technical side of production, and also into the union, the ACT’ (2000: 191).
