Carmona retusa Carmona Boraginaceae Forest Starr, Kim Starr, and Lloyd Loope United States Geological Survey--Biological Resources Division Haleakala Field Station, Maui, Hawai'i January, 2003 OVERVIEW Carmona retusa is a popular ornamental plant cultivated in Hawai'i as a hedge or specimen plant. On Maui, C. retusa is observed in residential plantings, mostly in low elevation neighborhoods, such as Kahului, Wailuku, Lahaina, Paia, Haiku, and Kihei. Seedlings and naturalized plants are also commonly observed in landscaping areas and wild semi-wild areas nearby plantings. In one area in Waiehu, C. retusa forms a dense shrubby understory in a kiawe (Prosopis pallida) forest. This plant is fairly widespread on Maui and is probably beyond the eradication stage. Future efforts should be aimed at monitoring, preventing infestations in natural areas, and educating the public about harmful plants that spread beyond the confines of the garden. TAXONOMY Family: Boraginaceae (Heliotrope family) (Lorence et al. 1995, Wagner et al. 1999). Latin name: Carmona retusa (Vahl) Masamune (Lorence et al. 1995, Wagner et al. 1999). Synonyms: C. microphylla (Lam.) Don; Ehretia microphylla Lam.; Ehretia buxifolia Roxb.; Cordia retusa Vahl (Lorence et al. 1995; Bailey and Bailey 1976; GRIN 2001). Common names: Carmona, Philippine tea (Bailey and Bailey 1976), Fukien tea (Caine and Zane 2001). Taxonomic notes: The genus Carmona, also commonly known as Ehretia, is comprised of about 50 species of evergreen or deciduous shrubs and trees of tropical and subtropical regions of both the New and Old World (Bailey and Bailey 1976). A description and illustrations are provided, together with a conservation assessment and a new key to the species of Ehretia in Thailand. [M0188691, M0188692]). Figs. 1–2. comprises ca 50 species of trees to shrubs. The genus, formerly in Boraginaceae subfam. Ehretioideae, is Trees, 3–7 m tall; bark thin, rough, grey-brown, now classified under Ehretiaceae (Boraginales), and with elliptic lenticels, glabrous; branchlets terete, is distinguished by having a bifid style with two glabrous to sparsely puberulous with glandular stigmatic branches and drupaceous fruits with four trichomes when young. Leaves chartaceous, elliptic pyrenes (Gottschling & Hilger, 2004; Luebert et al., to broadly ovate, 12–18 × 7–12 cm, apex cuspidate 2016). Vegetation is dominated by Virginia and shortleaf pine; occasionally with pitch pine. Hardwoods may be abundant, especially dry-site oaks such as southern red oak, chestnut oak, and scarlet oak, but also pignut hickory, red maple, and others. A heath shrub layer may be well developed. Herbs are usually sparse, though communities of this system may have been grassy when fires were more frequent. The ecological character and natural distribution of this system has been obscured over the years by human settlement, universal logging, pine beetle outbreaks, and fire suppression. HABITAT TYPE: Forest/ Woodlands Forest/Woodland habitats describe large areas primarily dominated by trees, with moderate ground coverage, such as grasses and shrubs. Density, tree height, and land use may all vary, though woodland is typically used to describe lower density forests. A forest may have an open canopy, but a woodland must have an open canopy with enough sunlight to reach the ground and limited shade. Predicted climate change will largely impact changes in temperature and moisture availability in forest/ woodlands systems, likely having a cascading effect on a species habitat and increasing stress to many of these species. The Appalachian LCC funded NatureServe to conduct vulnerability assessments on a suite of plants, animals, and habitats within the Appalachians. These assessments can be used as an early warning system to alert resource managers about changing conditions. This review critically assesses and documents, for the first time, the fragmented information on E. laevis, including its botanical description, folklore uses, bioactive phyto metabolites and pharmacological activities. The goal is to explore this plant therapeutically. Ethnomedicinal surveys reveal that E. laevis has been used by tribal communities in Asian countries for the treatment of various disorders. April, 2011 1 INTRODUCTION In mid June 2010, the Carolina Vegetation Survey conducted an initial inventory of natural communities along the far western montane counties of North Carolina. There had never been a project designed to classify the diversity of natural upland (and some wetland) communities throughout this portion of North Carolina. Furthermore, the data captured from these plots will enable us to refine the community classification within the broader region. The goal of this report is to determine a classification structure based on the synthesis of vegetation data obtained from the June 2010 sampling event, and to use the resulting information to develop restoration targets for disturbed ecosystems location in this general region of North Carolina. STUDY AREA AND FIELD METHODS From June 13‐20 2010, a total of 48 vegetation plots were established throughout the far western mountains of North Carolina (Figure 1). Focus locations within the study area included the Pisgah National Forest (NF) (French Broad and Pisgah Ranger Districts), the Nantahala NF (Tusquitee Ranger District), and Sandymush Game Land. Target natural communities throughout the week included basic oak‐hickory forest, rich cove forest, northern hardwood and boulderfield forest, chestnut oak forest, montane red cedar woodland, shale slope woodland, montane alluvial slough forest, and low elevation xeric pine forest.
