This was quite interesting and well done, and it seems interesting that though this book was written at the early part of Anna Anderson's "career" as a surviving Grand Duchess, that it did not put an end to her shenanigans and that it took a DNA test to prove that she was not who she claimed. I just finished this book and it is excellent. MrBy R. LoweI just finished this book and it is excellent. Mr. Gilliard tells the absolute truth concerning the so called Anastasia story of survival. His points are more than valid and it is heart breaking that he, the Grand Duchess Olga and all those who denied the claimants stories were so belittled. Certainly it would have been more than wonderful had any of the family had survived the massacre in the cellar. One only has to look at the photos. Absolutely no way Anna Anderson was Anastasia. No way. Of course todays DNA proves only what Mr. Gilliard knew all along. A fascinating book and one every Romanov collector should own. The authors, Pierre Gilliard and Constantin Savitch have produced an excellent, incisive and detailed analytical account of Franziska Schanzkovski (aka Anna Anderson), a former Polish laborer who was used and misguided by a coterie of "friends" in an effort to gain control of the foreign investments of Tsar Nicholas II, particularly those in Germany. A prevalent rumor circulating at the time was that she was the illegitimate daughter of Tsar Nicholas II and Mathilde Kschessinska, the famous ballerina with whom he had a three-year romantic relationship prior to his marriage to Alexandra Feodorovna in 1894. The doctors who examined her after she made an unsuccessful suicide attempt in Berlin on 17 February 1920 stated that she appeared to have been born between 1892 and 1894. Moreover, Anna Anderson—who bore no physical, mental or emotional similiarity to Anastasia Nicholaievna Romanov—was none other than a mentally unbalanced unmarried woman who was gradually and delusively led to believe that she was really Anastasia Romanov. Yet, when found, she spoke only Polish and German. On the other hand, the real Anastasia did not speak these two languages, but did speak English, French and Russian very well. To paraphrase Disraeli, in his book, "Konigsby," the true identity and saga of the real Anastasia and her family is enmeshed in deep intrigue, which can never be imagined by someone who is not behind the scenes. The saga of the real Anastasia Nicolaievna began in Peterhof, Russia on 18 June 1901 and ended in Newport, Rhode Island on 31 January 1997. The other members of the family lived out their lives in relative seclusion and anonymity as a result of a secret codicil in the Treaty of Brest- Litovsk on 3 March 1918 that ended the war between Germany and Russia. Weyman, Master of Arts, 2018 Thesis Directed By: Associate Professor Olga Haldey, Division of Musicology and Ethnomusicology The story of Anastasia Nikolaevna Romanova has been engrained in the American imagination for nearly a century. This tale has often been told on stage and screen, depicting Anastasia and her most famous impersonator: Anna Anderson. The adaptation of Anna and Anastasia’s tale that has made the most lasting impact is the 1951 French play, Anastasia, by Marcelle Maurette, and its 1954 English translation by Guy Bolton. Four more adaptations have followed that progenitor play: the 1956 film, Anastasia; the 1965 operetta, Anya; the 1997 animated film, Anastasia; and the 2017 musical, Anastasia. These five artistic adaptations evolved from one another, navigating their own history alongside changing American values. She was born Princess Marie Sophie Frederikke Dagmar on 26 November 1847, at the Yellow Palace in Copenhagen. Her father was Prince Christian of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg (Later King Christian IX of Denmark) and mother was Princess Louise of Hesse. On June 11, 1866, the Tsarevich and Grand Duke Alexander Alexandrovich decided to make a proposal, and wrote to his father about that day: “I was about to talk with her several times, but I couldn’t decide everything, although we were several times together. When we looked at a photographic album together, my thoughts were not at all on the pictures; I was just thinking how to proceed with my request. Finally, I decided, and did not even have time to say what I wanted. Minnie rushed over my neck and cried. Of course, I also could not refrain from tears. I told her that our dear Nixa prays a lot for us and, of course, at this moment is happy with us. Tears flowed from me. I asked her if she could love anyone else besides dear Nixa. She told me that no one but his brother, and again we hugged tight. We talked a lot and remembered about Nixa, about the last days of his life in Nice and his demise.
