Before you start writing up your research it’s recommended to have an idea of where you’re planning to submit it for publication so you know in which style and format to use when writing

The Master Journal List (mjl.clarivate.com) is a free tool to help you narrow down your journal options based on your research topic and goals - only contain curated journals selected for high quality

You can: • Check a journal’s scope and requirements for different types of submissions • Get information about the journal to help you decide • Use Manuscript Matcher (add in your title and ) to get a list of good journal matches

Insert footer 39 4. Building and maintaining an online presence

Insert footer 40 4. Building and maintaining an online presence

4.1 4.2 Research fields and keywords 4.3 Researcher profile platform options 4.4 Promoting yourself and your research

Insert footer 41 4.1 Bibliometrics

Bibliometrics is a way to quantitatively analyse someone’s research impact complementing qualitative indicators (e.g grants, awards, patents) The most common metrics you’ll find on a researcher’s profile is:

• Citations (total, excluding self-citations) • Indexes – e.g the h-index, where an h-index of 5 means you have published at least 5 papers with at least 5 citations each) • Publication output in percentiles

Insert footer 42 4.2 Research fields and keywords

• Choose keywords and describe your research field as exactly as possible • Expand upon your previous work and your current expertise in a short bio • Use generic and specialist keywords as there is overlap between some fields

This makes it easier for others to find you: • Editors looking for reviewers • Students looking for supervisors • News media looking for experts • Researchers looking for collaborators • Reviewers looking for author profiles (including grant application reviewers)

Insert footer 43 4.3 Researcher Profile platform options

Research profile platforms are a public researcher CV

There are many options: • ResearchGate • Mendeley • ORCiD • Publons/Web of Science Researcher ID

Insert footer 44 4.4 Promoting yourself and your research

Promote yourself and your research to increase your research and researcher impact (e.g reads, citations, press, altmetric scores) • Personal website • Researcher profiles • Social media (twitter, LinkedIn)

Anything additional you can add to grant and job/tenure applications • Become a well-known expert in your field (media and press) • Community outreach (e.g presentations about your work at museums or events)
