I N r K O D L' c r I O N

Malay may he described as a language in which it is easy to make oneself understood but which it is difllcult to speak idiomatically. Its very simpli- city is a snare. It docs not readily adapt itself to conditional or dependent constructions, so that the attempt to literally translate English into Malay usually ends in failure. The student should accordingly aim at simplicity ; if the sentence he wishes to translate is involved, he should divide it into two or three simple sentences. Thus " bring me the hat " may be readily put into Malay, but " bring me the hat that I bought yesterday " should " be expressed : I bought a hat yesterday ; bring it."

A native avoids the use of unnecessary words. If a man meets a friend on the road he would not say " Wliere are you going to ? " but simply '' whither ? " {ka-mana). The circumstances undei which the question is addressed suggest the rest of the sentence. He may use " you " if the presence of other people on the road makes the question " " otherwise ambiguous ; he will say going if the action is doubtful, and he will indicate the present tense if he wishes to emphasize it. The full question " Where are you going to ? " if literally translated, would suggest " To what particular place are you of all people, at this of all times, possibly going to ? " The golden rule in speaking Malay is to eliminate unnecessary words. Do not say " bring me my hat." when " bring hat " will suffice. —

NTROr)UCTrON,

Another valuable rule is to make as much use as possible of voice inflexion. A question can be expressed, and (by natives) is usually expressed, not by an elaborate interrogative construction but by simply altering the tone of voice. Interrogative constructions are for written Malay whei'e intonation is impossible, not for spoken Malay where intonation will suffice. Do not attempt to be too precise. In the ex- pression " I went to town yesterday," it is unneces- sary to go out of one's way to use the past tense (fiudah pegi). The word "yesterday" is suflicient to .show that the going took place in the past.

If unnecessary words are eliminated, if intona- tion is made full use of, and if over-precision is not aimed at, the simple constructions of the Malay language will suffice for all practical purposes to express our thoughts.

The following grammatical rules may be found useful :

ARTICLE.—There is no article in Malay. For the indefinite article, the word " sa " (one) may be used ; for the definite artiole, the demonstrative pronouns ini (this) and itii (that) can be employed.

Sa precedes the noun ; ini and itii follow it. In most cases the article can be omitted as unnecessary.

XOl'N.—The noun is not inflected. The plural Clin be indicated, if necessary, either by doubling the woi'd (e.g., rumah-rumah, houses, from riimah, iiouse), or by using a multiple such as banya'

( nmch, many). The genitive can be expressed either by the use of pnniia, e.g., sahya pnnya niniah (my house) or by naming the possessor after the thing possessed, e.g., runiah sahya (my house). The us* INTRODUCTION.

'•f imnya is u Chinese idiom but is coaiinonly used riic Mccusjitive is not niarlvcd in any way.

ADJECTlVE.-'VXw atljective is not inlkcted. It follows tlic noun, e.g., orntuj kaya (a rich niani. 11 is really an adjectival noun, uruny kaya being lilerally "• man of wealth," while kaya orany would mean *' N\ealtli ol" man." (Comparison is expressed l»\ liii- use ol tleri or ileripada. " This liouse is higher than that house " would be " linygi rumah iiii ili'ri{iaila rumah ilu." The superlative is expressed by preli.viug ymiy and sullixing sa-kuli, e.g., " the highest " is yatiy linygi sa-kali.

PliO^OL^'.—The use of the pronoun is some- what idiomatic. For the first person singular, a European should use aaliya. For the second person, lu should onlj be used when addressing a Chinese

servant ; in addressing Malays, the name or title of the person addressed should be used. In most cases the pronoun is unnecessary. The tliird person singular (where absolutely necessary j is dia, or ia. The hrst person plural is kila. " They " uia-y be expressed by dia urang, but dia will usually sullice.

The demonstfatives are ini (this) aud itu (that). The use of the relative pronouns should be avoided.

The interrogatives are : siapa (who), apa (what), rnana ( where).

ADVERB.—The rules for the adverb are identical with those for the adjective.

VERB.—The Malay \erb is really a verbal noun. Thus kata oraiig may be translated "people say," hut is more lilerall.\ *' Ihe saying of men i.s." The verb has aect)idiiigly no inlle.\ions lo show mood, lense, number or person. A past signillcation can INTRODUCTION.

be given by prefixing sudah and a future significa- tion by prefixing mau or henda' or (in Penang) na' ; it is, however, usually unnecessary to indicate tense in this way. Tenses like the future perfect and pluperfect, and moods like the conditional and subjunctive, only occur in English in compound constructions such as should be avoided in Malay by solution into simple sentences. PREPOSITIONS, CONJUNCTIONS, and INTER- JECTIONS.—These will be found in the Vocabulary. They call for no remark. The key to speaking Malay is, as we have already stated, the art of simplifying one's English and then ti-anslating it. The beginner, whose limitations compel him to stick to simple sentences, is often better understood than the more ambitious advanced student who attempts to use conditional and relative sentences. Literary Malay has, of course, greater capabilities than the ordinary colloquial, but it demands prolonged study and is only understood by the best educated Malays. .

Note. —The ordinal numerals follow the noun to which they refer, e.g., "on the seventh day" would be translated " i)a(hi hurt ijang ketujoh." Care must be taken to observe this rule as " ketujoh hari " would not mean '• the seventh dav " but " all seven davs." .

A half Sa-tengah. Three quarters Tiga suku. One and a half Tcngah dua. Two and a half Tengah tiga. Note.—Tlie use of any fractions except the simple ones mentioned or suggested above is liable to expose the user to the possibility of being mis- understood. Fractional forms such as sa-pertiga (a third), sa-peranam (a sixth), dua pera'nam (two- sixths), etc., are found in books but are rarely understood. Special expressions such as sa-tali (a third) are met with in some localities but are not in general use.

Idiomatic Xcmervl Expressions. Two special features of the use of the Malay numerals deserve mention though they are practi- cally confined to the language when spoken in Its purity and are not often met with in the "bazaar" Malay of the towns. —

Numerals.

A peculiar numeral form is created by prefixing " ber " to the cardinal numeral. It may be roughly " ." " translated in a party of— Thus : sahaya pegi birtiga, pulang berdiia " would mean " I w ent in a party of three, and returned in a party of two," or " I went with two companions and returned with one."

Again, just as occasionally in English we do not use expressions such as " two cattle," but speak of " two head of cattle," so the almost invariable rule in pure Malay is to use a classifier or co-eflicient between the cardinal numeral and the noun. Thus, they speak of " one tail of horse," instead of " one horse {sa-ekor kuda). The principal classifiers are :

Orang before names of human beings, e.g., sa-orang mata-mata (a policeman).

Ekor before names of animals, e.g., lima ekor lembii (five oxen).

Biiah . before the names of globular objects of fair or large size and before the names of large or massive objects generally, e.g., sa-buah batii (a stone or rock), sa-biiali gunong (a mountain), sa-buah ncgri (a town).

Biji before the names of objects of insigni- ficant size such as seeds, precious stones, etc.

Batang before the names of objects of long cylindrical shape such as spears, or trees (from their trunks).

Bilah before the names of objects suggesting long thin strips, such as knives, swords, etc.

Lai before the names of tenuous objects such as feathers, pieces of cloth, sheets of paper, etc. —

Thk Houbs of THi; Day. The time of day is expressed by prefixing pukul (it is striking) to the cardinal number expressing the hour, e.g. : — One o'clock Pukul satu. Just one o'clock Bharu pukul satu. Past one o'clock Surhih pukul satu. Not quite one o'clock lltuni pukul .

NoTi;.—The computation of time by clockwork is ol cour>e, alien to the habits of the more primiiivr Malays in the country, and the expressions given above are English in point of idiom. The primitive methods of computing duration were based upon the duration of well-known acts such as "the time it takes to boil rice" {sa-petana' nasi). In calculating the time of day, the rural Malay uses expressi
