Course Information 01924 789111 / wakefield.ac.uk/he 27 I’m 23 and have been a professional dancer for over five years now. I’ve started two small companies: Creative Creatures which provides dance-based classes, workshops and events around the region; and The Riot Sessions which is a breakdance and extreme events company. I ran my first event last year in August at Upton skate park which was a great success. Dance has enabled me to travel the world and meet some fantastic people, but I’m aware that performing isn’t a career that lasts forever. That’s why I chose to study management and business enterprise at Wakefield College because it gives me skills I can use both now and in the future.” Hannah Thompson FD Management & Business Enterprise

54 Higher Education Prospectus 2015 I progressed from a BTEC Level 3 course to the HND in Dance. It was nice to stay local and in a familiar environment, and where I could continue to build relationships with my tutors. This year we’ve moved to the new Performing Arts Centre at the Waterton Building. It’s great to have our own city centre building, and the facilities are easily as good as those at Thornes Park. The HND course doesn’t ignore theory, which is important, but it’s a very practical course with an emphasis on taking part in a diverse range of performances. I’ve learned something new in every unit I’ve completed, and also had the chance to reflect on what I’ve learned. The tutors are really helpful and absolutely passionate about their art forms, and the visits from external professional artists have broadened our horizons. The course sets you up for a range of careers in dance, and I’m already planning to top it up to a BA.” Emma-Jo Davis HND Dance

58 Higher Education Prospectus 2015 I originally joined the course as a guitarist so I could hide in the background, but when the tutors found out I could sing, they pushed me to the front of the stage. I have always loved singing, but was never confident enough to develop my skills in this direction. Now I can confidently write songs, sing in front of crowds and put myself forward for projects I would have run a mile from before. My tutors are brilliant – really friendly and approachable. They all have their own styles of teaching, which keeps lessons varied and interesting, and they’re all practising musicians too. We have plenty of opportunities to perform in a variety of settings, and this helps us to get used to working in different venues and environments. Since joining the course, I’ve become part of a heavy rock band, Temples Fall, and have also developed my own home recording studio using techniques and recommendations from tutors and other students. After the course, I plan to top up my HND to a Bachelor’s Degree in Music, and then go on to teacher training.” Sophie Harvey HND Music

Course Information 01924 789111 / wakefield.ac.uk/he 79 The support from my tutors has been great and the continuous assessment is an advantage compared to an exam-based course. The broad range of skills you learn puts you in a strong position to progress; it’s great and I have recommended the course to a colleague in my office. It’s difficult to put into words how much I have learnt! I would tell anyone who has the chance to study at Higher Education level to grab it and keep learning. I wouldn’t have been able to progress without it. It’s opened up a whole new field of opportunities that didn’t exist 18 months ago!” Aimee Willett HNC Business

I am a Business Development Executive and recognised that the HNC Mechanical Engineering would be beneficial to my role and give me a better understanding of the industry, which would in turn help me to provide a better service to our clients and increase potential business opportunities. My employer has been extremely supportive and flexible whilst I have been studying; I have also been training for the Commonwealth Games for the Ladies Double Trap in Clay pigeon shooting and I’ve just been ranked 18th in the World in the World English Sporting competition Ladies category and my employer has been very supportive about that too. 110 Higher Education Prospectus 2015 Course Information 01924 789111 / wakefield.ac.uk/he 111 I started studying at Wakefield College with the ILM Level 3 Course which helped me to get a promotion a few years ago. Since then I have done the Foundation Degree in Logistics and Supply Chain Management and a BA Honours degree in Business and Management which have both helped me progress in my career and become a manager. Now I’m doing the CMI Level 7 in Strategic Management and Leadership which is providing me with a view on the strategic side of management. The assignments are linked to work so the course is valuable for my career development and performance in the workplace. The class sizes at Wakefield College are relatively small which is an advantage because they allow for more one- to-one interaction with the tutors.” Pablo Rodriguez-Bozzo Administrator and Special Projects Manager at Leeds South and East CCG CMI Level 7 Strategic Management and Leadership

Course Information 01924 789111 / wakefield.ac.uk/he 123 I work as a Quality and Training Officer for Barnsley Council. To safeguard my career prospects I decided to gain a Level 4 qualification in Learning and Development and looked around at various providers. I chose Wakefield College on the recommendation of colleagues and because the course at Wakefield seemed the best fit with my job role. I can’t speak too highly of my Assessor. She was friendly and approachable, gave invaluable feedback and had a gift for making difficult concepts easy to understand. I didn’t have to attend College - she came to my workplace for meetings and based a lot of my work around assignments. I hadn’t studied for a number of years, but my Assessor made the task much less daunting than it might have been." Carol Beaumont Diploma in Learning and Development
