In a Special Session April 18, Utah lawmakers voted to override two of Governor Herbert’s vetoes. An override requires a two-thirds majority vote in each house.

Senate Bill 171 override passed 21-7 in the Senate and 55-15 in the House. SB 171 authorizes the Legislature to defend laws challenged in court even if the attorney general chooses not to defend the law.

The Legislature also voted to override House Bill 198 which establishes procedures requiring the attorney general to provide legal opinions to the legislature. The veto override passed the state Senate 20-8 and the state House 63-7.

Legislators passed a constitutional amendment that, if passed by voters in November, would give the legislature the ability to call itself into a special session during certain “emergency” sessions, such as ahead of a special election like the one that elected a replacement for Jason Chaffetz congressional seat. State Senator Don Ipson, who represents District 29, is a successful business man who loves people and is very caring. He had an occasion to ride a motorcycle to help raise funds for Multiple Sclerosis. He raised more funds than anyone else in his group. Riding bikes and motorcycles is one of the Senator’s favorite sports. He once rode a bike across the Red Hills and was asked if he thought it was too dangerous. He then turned it into a motorcycle ride, which he thought would be safer. Sen. Ipson’s hobby is to acquire classic cars and vintage tractors and restore them to original condition. While in the Senate one time, he became hungry. He charged one of his cooks to fix up enough chicken to feed the whole senate and delivered it to them. We are proud to have Senator Don Ipson represent us in Washington County.

I’m pleased to report that we have attained almost 118% of last years membership numbers with 78 total members (we had 66 members last year). Of those 78, 15 are new members, 11 are returning members (welcome back) and 52 are renewals from last year.

We have a total of 23 Associate Members, 4 of which are new Associates.

Special recognition goes to our 50 Gem Members, 14 of which are Associates. All of the money from our Associates’ dues and Gem Member donations stays in our club. As you know, a percentage of our base $25 dues go to UFRW and NFRW. The extra monies from Associates and Gems allow us to offer scholarships and do the other good works in our community.

Recruiting new and renewing present members for WCRW is a necessary and ongoing process to keep our club growing. If you have friends, neighbors or spouses whom you think would enjoy being a part of our organization, please invite them to a luncheon.

Recipe Roundup Representative Travis Seegmiller’s Favorite Great Grandma Seegmiller’s Famous Venison Roast

Marination: Additional Ingredients: 1/4 C soy sauce 1 large venison roast 1/8 C Worchestershire sauce 1 large clove of garlic Cap full of balsamic vinegar (not salad vinaigrette) 1 large onion Cap full of liquid smoke 1 medium onion 1/2 cap full of Kitchen Bouquet margination sauce

Marinade Instructions: Drench marinade over roast. Sprinkle generously with black pepper (do not salt; it dries the meat). Place garlic slices all over the meat (but remove before cooking because they become bitter). Place onion and apple slices all over the meat (the pectin in the apples helps tenderize the meat; more pectin is released if the apples are peeled). Marinate for 24 hrs. baste roast with juices again before cooking; remove garlic.

Cooking & Serving Instructions: Put venison roast in crock pot on low with 1/4 cup of water (or beef broth or apple juice) for 8-10 hours OR in a glass baking dish covered with foil in an oven heated at 325 for 4 hours. If desired, in the last hour of cooking, put some fresh white onion slices on the roast. Carefully slice the roast and baste with juices again before serving. Use juices to make a brown gravy. Serve with mashed potatoes and fresh, hand picked asparagus from Seegmiller Family Farm.
