Translationsareinseparablepartsofoureverydaylives.Wereadbookswrittenbyforeign

authorsinourmothertongue,wereadandlistentoworldnewsonTVorinradioandwe

readarticlesinmagazinesthatarepublishedinmanycountriesoftheworld.Our

politiciansspeakwithforeigncountries’politiciansatEUandNATOmeetings,

internationalcorporationsofferustheirgoodsandtheirmanagementandmarketing

departmentstrytoattractourattentionwithcatchingadvertisements.Weuseelectrical

appliancesaccordingtotheirmanualsandinstructionsandweprepareMexicancuisinein

accordancewithoriginalrecipes.WewatchAmericanandThaimovieswithCzech

dubbingorsubtitles.Wesigncontractswithforeigncompaniesandwetravelforbusiness

orjustforfunandweneedtocommunicateincountriesthatwevisitforanyofthese

reasons.

Thislistisnotcomplete,butitgivesusanotionoftheimportanceoftranslations.In

theory,thisshouldmeanthattheauthorsoftranslations,too,areappreciatedand

respected.Unfortunately,thisisnotalwaysthecase.

“Agoodtranslation”mustbefluent,idiomaticandnatural.AsLawrenceVenuti

expressestheparadoxoftranslators’invisibility:“Themorefluentthetranslation,the

moreinvisiblethetranslator,and,presumably,themorevisiblethewriterormeaningof

theforeigntext”(Venuti2).Thus,thebetterandthemoreconscientiousthetranslator,the

lessvisiblehispersonandconsequentlyhisnameare.

Astartingpointtogivetranslatorsthecreditfortheirworkcouldbetorecognizetheir

authorshipandtoappreciatetheirworkatleastbypublishingtheirnamesinbooksand

otherpublicationstheytranslateandtomentionthemalsointherespectivereviewsofthe

bookstranslatedbythem.MorenaNannettiagreesonthispointandfeelssorrythatitis

5 notalwaysthereality:

[T]hequestionofwritingthenameofthetranslatorinapublishedbook

remainsessential.Tonamethetranslatorisaformofremunerationand

acknowledgment.Thetranslatorlendshisvoicetoanauthor,allowing

himtoreachanaudiencewhospeaksadifferentlanguage.Thetranslator

ishimselfthe“author”ofthetranslatedbookandindeedhekeepscertain

rightsonhistranslation...Alsoatranslatedarticleappearingina

newspapershouldquotethenameofthetranslator,butagainthisisnot

AnothertranslatorandtheoristspeakingonthistopicisBeatrizZellerwhowroteanessay

OnTranslationandAuthorship.Sheoffersthisview:

Soentrenchedistheperceptionoftranslatorsasagentsofawriter’swork

inanotherlanguageandsowidelyacceptedthenotionofthetranslatoras

mereconduitofaworkintoanotherlanguage,onerisksbeingridiculed

whensuggestingthatthetranslator’snamebeplacedonthecoverofthe

bookalongsidethatofthewriteroftheoriginal.(Zeller)

Thisthesiscomparestherulesandthelawsinthisareawiththeactualsituation.Inthe

firstpartofthiswork,mostlytheoreticalinvestigationsofthisfieldareaddressed.The

firstpartdescribestheimportancethatthelawandotherrulesgivetothetranslators’

profession.Thefirstsubchapterdealswiththehistoryoftranslationandwiththechanges

inattitudetowardstranslationsandtranslatorsthroughouttime.Thesecondsubchapter

investigatestherulesofcitingtranslatedpublications,andthestylesofwriting

bibliographies.Itdiscussestheissuewhetherweciteandputinbibliographiesonlythe

authorsoftheoriginaltextsorwhetherwementionalsothetranslators.TheMLA,APA

andASAeditorialstylesandaCzechoneČSNISO690areexaminedaswell.Thethird

6 subchapteranalyzesindetailwhatthelawsaysonthismatterand,consequently,itlooks

atthecopyrightlawaswell.

Thesecondpartdiscussesthepotentialdiscrepancybetweenpracticeandtheactual

situation.Amethodologyofthisinvestigation,acollectionofdataandvarioustypesof

sourcesaredescribedinthefirstsubchapter.Thesecondsubchapterprovidesalistof

severalkindsoftranslationsandexamplesineachofthemwithregardtothefactwhether

anameofatranslatorispublishedthereornot.Thethirdsubchaptercontainsaresearchin

variouskindsofmagazinesandfindsoutwhetherreviewsoftranslatedbooksprovide

theirreaderswithnamesofthetranslators.Thefourthsubchapterdealswithauthorshipin

aconnectiontotherecentandongoingphenomenonofinternet.Thelastsubchapterof

thispartofthethesisisaresearchofpeople’sawarenessofanameofatranslatorwho

translatedbookstheyhaveread.

Theconclusionsumsupalltheinformationacquiredthroughoutallrespectivepartsof

thepaperandprovidesafinalcomparisonofthetheoryandthepractice.

IncaseswhereanyoftheCzechsourcesofinformationarecited,Iprovidedmyown

translationsorsummariesoftheCzechtextinEnglish.

1.1 History of Translation

Translatinghasalongandverychequeredhistory.AlexGrosschartsatimelineof

changingneedsthatmotivatedcontemporarytranslatorsandinterpretersattheirwork:

fromthe“marriagebrokers”and“peaceseekers”inprehistoricaltimestomoderntimes

ofglobalisation(Gross,“OutlinefortheNYUSeminar,APracticalViewofTranslation

History”).Thisveryshortenedandbriefhistoryoftranslationshowsthemotivesof

translatorsanditalsodescribesandprovestheimportanceofthisprofession.

Consequently,aperceptionofanauthorshiphasbeensignificantlychangingintimeas

well.Therewereperiodsoftimewhentranslatorswerepraisedfortheirwork;other

epochswhentheycooperatedandtheauthorshipwasoflittleimportance;andtimeswhen

itwasdangeroustoadmitauthorshipofcertaintranslations,mostlyreligiousandpolitical

publications(Bassnett).

SusanBassnettdescribesthehistoryoftranslationinherworkHistoryofTranslation

Theory .Shefocusesmainlyontheapproachthattranslatorshavetakentotheirworkbut

shealsomentionsthewaytranslator’sworkhasbeenperceivedsincetheRomanstillthe

20 th century.TheRomanstranslatedpredominantlyGreekauthors.Inthisperiodthough,

itwasverycommontobebilingualandsothetranslationscouldhavebeeneasily

comparedtooriginals.Romantranslatorswantednotonlytospreadtheknowledgeand

thearttheirmainaimwastoenrichtheirownlanguage.Translationswerethusassessed

accordingtothetranslator’screativity,andthetranslator’sauthorshipwasrelevanttothe

readerwhenheenjoyedtheparticular“”oftheoriginal.

8 Translationoftheandreligioustextshasgonethroughveryinconstant

development.“Areligionastextbasedaspresentedthetranslatorwitha

missionthatencompassedbothaestheticandevangelisticcriteria”(Bassnett45).John

Wycliffe,forexample,proclaimedthatthetextofsuchanimportanceshouldbe

accessibletoeveryoneineveryone’svernacular.Despitethefactthatthisstatementwas

attackedasheretical,hisworkfounditsdevoteesandWycliffe’sfollowerscarriedonin

hiseffort.Thetranslationofreligioustextswasusuallyacollaborativetaskand“inanage

whenthechoiceofthebadpronouncouldmeanthedifferencebetweenlifeor

condemnationtodeathasaheretic”(Bassnett49)itwasnotverysafetoadmitbeingan

authorofsuchatext.

KingAlfred“whotranslated(orcausedtobetranslated)anumberofLatintexts”

(Bassnett50)realisedtheimportanceoftranslationsinformingthevernaculardamaged

afterDanishinvasionsinthe9 th centuryEngland.Translatorswere,logically,important

figuresinthedevelopmentofnational.Sometimes,itwashardtosaywhothe

authorofanoriginalworkisastheprintingpresswasyettobeinventedandtheoriginals

wereexpensiveandhardtogetinthosedays.FloraRossAmosdevotesherworkEarly

TheoriesofTranslation totranslators’notes,prefacesandintroductionsintheir

translations,especiallywithregardtothepre1476England.InthepreCaxtonera,notes

oftenincludedinformationabouttheoriginofthework(moreorlessexhausting):“The

translatorwhoexplained"Ifounditwritteninoldhand"wasprobablygivingasadequate

anaccountofhissourceastruthwouldpermit”(RossAmos11).

Theinventionoftheprintingpressmeantasignificantturninpublishingandall

spheresconnectedwithit.“"Ordering"anEnglishversionofaforeignbookbecameno

uncommonthingforthosewhoownedmanuscriptsandcouldaffordsuchcommoditiesas

translations”(RossAmos10).Medievalperiodpraisedsomuchthe“ imitatio ”that“the

9 pointatwhichawriterconsideredhimselftobeatranslatorofanothertext,asopposedto

theusehemightmakeoftranslatedmaterialplagiarizedfromothertexts,israrelyclear”

(Bassnett53).Medievalpublicconsideredtranslatorstobeveryimportant.Sadevidences

ofthisclaimareseveralcasesofcondemnationstodeathfortheirwork.

TheeraoftheRenaissancebroughtwithitaperceptionoftheneedoftranslationsfor

intellectuallifeoftheperiod.Translatorswereseen“almostasarevolutionaryactivist

ratherthantheservantofanoriginalauthorortext”(Bassnett58).Intheseventeenth

century,thepositionoftranslators’professionevolvedyetagain,asBassnettbriefly

summarizes:“Denhamarguesforaconceptoftranslationthatseestranslatorandoriginal

writerasequalsbutoperatinginclearlydifferentiatedsocialandtemporalcontexts”

(Bassnett59).

Gradually,however,thestatusoftranslatorsslowlybegantodecrease.Intheperiodof

Romanticism,twoinfluentialtheoriesoftranslationappeared.Oneofthemseesthe

translatoras“acreativegeniusinhisownright...enrichingtheliteratureandlanguageinto

whichheistranslating”;andtheotheroneseestranslation“intermsofthemore

mechanicalfunctionof“makingknown”atextorauthor”(Bassnett65).Inthenineteenth

century,“thegrowthofprideinanationalculture,French,EnglishorGermantranslators

[...]nolongersawtranslationasaprimemeansofenrichingtheirownculture”(Bassnett

69).Victorianperiodthen“invented”thearchaizingstyleoftranslatingthatnarrowedthe

readershipoftranslationstoaneliteminority.Thetwentiethcenturythensawtranslators,

accordingtoGeorgeSteiner,asshadowyexistencesandaccordingtoLarbaudas“a

beggaratthechurchdoor”(quotedinBassnett75).

Asthissectionshows,translator’sstatushasundergonemanychanges“forthe

attitudestowardstranslation[...]belongtotheagethatproducesthem,andtothesocio

economicfactorsthatshapeanddeterminethatage”(Bassnett75).

Everywriterhasarighttobeidentifiedastheauthorofhis/hertextthathasbeencited.In

casethetranslator’sworkisquotedandhisnameomitted,thisconstitutesanactof

.Thefollowingsubchapterdealswiththislegalaspectindetail.Thestyleand

thewayofcitingdifferaccordingtotheeditorialstyleusedinacertaintext.Apartfrom

otherthings,thesestylessetrulesforwritingcitationsandbibliographies.Thissubchapter

investigateswritingofbibliographiesinthecaseoftranslatedbooksinthemostoften

usedstylesinEnglishspeakingcountriesandthemostcommononeintheCzech

Republic.

Forthepurposesofthisthesis,IsearchedtheinstructionsofAPA,ASA,MLAand

ČSNISO690stylesandcomparedthem.Thefirstandmostimmediatefactfromthis

researchisthattheseinstructionsdonotdiffermarkedly.Forexample,intextcitationsin

alleditorialstylesincludejustthenameoftheauthoroftheoriginalworkanddonotin

factclaimthattheyarecitationsoftranslatedworks.Thebibliographicinformationabout

translatedworksdoesalwaysincludethenameofatranslatorwithoutanyregardtothe

kindofeditorialstylethathasbeenused.

1.3 Copyright

Itcanbestatedthatingeneral,copyrightlawprotectstherightsofanauthorofanart

work(althoughitcanbetransmittedtoanother“personincharge”)andgivesaterm

authorshiplegalandeconomicaspects.Theserightsincludetherighttocopythework,

issuingcopiestothepublic,rentingorlendingcopiestothepublic,performing,showing

11 orplayingtheworkinpublic,broadcastingtheworkorothercommunicationtothepublic

byelectronictransmissionandmakinganadaptationofthework,suchasbytranslatinga

literaryordramaticwork,transcribingamusicalworkandconvertingacomputerprogram

intoadifferentcomputerlanguageorcode.Infringementofcopyrightistheactbreaking

anyoftheserights(Karidian).

Thislaw,asmentionedabove,protectstherightsofauthors–theproblemis,however,

whotheauthor,accordingtothislaw,is.InVenuti’sview,“Thetranslatoris...

subordinatedtotheauthor,whodecisivelycontrolsthepublicationofthetranslation

duringtermofthecopyrightforthe“original”text...”(8).Theactoftranslatingabook“is

classedasmakinganadaptationandyouwillneedtoseekpermissionoftheauthortodo

so”(Karidian).TheAmericanLiteraryTranslatorsAssociationinitspublication

“BreakingintoPrint”(availableonline)statesthat:

Publishingatranslationinvolvestwodistinctbutinterdependentrights:

• therightstothesourcework,usuallycontrolledbytheauthororhisorherpublisher,

includingtherighttoallowotherpeopletopublishtranslationsofthework;

• therightstotheEnglishversionofthesourcework,whicharecontrolledbythe

translator.

IvoTelec,auniversityprofessorteachingatthefacultyoflawattheMasarykUniversity,

alsoconfirmsthataneedofanauthor’sapprovalisessentialwhenyouwanttomakean

adaptation(andthetranslationistheadaptationfromthispointofview)ofanoriginal

workincaseitismadeforapurposeofpublicusingofthisadaptation.Itusuallymeans

itspublishing(Telec).

Ontheotherhand,atranslatorwhocarriesoutthefirsttranslationinaparticular

languagebecomesanownerofcopyright.Hehastobeaskedwhensomeothertranslator

wantstotranslatethesamebookintothesamelanguage.Thislawconsiderablyincreases

12 astatusofthetranslatorandgiveshimrightstohisworkandtoolstocontrolthem.But

thetranslatorscan(andveryoftendo)giveuptheirrightsorpartoftheminfavourofthe

publishers.Theircontractsusuallycontainaclausetransferringarighttopublishtheir

workstopublishers.Thetransferofthisrightisusuallyforasingleedition.Thepublisher

andthetranslatorthenhavetosignanothercontractbeforethenextedition(Reichel).

2.1 Methodology

Thesecondpartofthispaperfocusesonapracticalresearch.Itdescribestheactual

situationofpublishingnamesoftranslatorsindifferenttypesoftranslations.Eachtypeof

thetranslationiscoveredinasinglesubchapter.Theresearchisbasedonananalysisofa

setofrepresentativetextsinallcategories.Sourcesofthesetextsarechoseninordertobe

varied.Magazines(insubchaptersdealingwithmagazinearticlesandreviewsof

translatedworks)rangefromliteraryandsophisticatedonestolifestylemagazines.This

choicehelpstocoverawideofferofmagazinesonthemarketandtomakeacomparison

ofdifferenttypesofthem.Thecompletelistofusedmagazinescanbefoundinan

appendixtothethesis.

AsubchapterdealingwithliterarytranslationscontainsalsostatementsofCzech

publishers.Thethreepublishersthatansweredmyquestionsrankamongstthemost

famouspublishersintheCzechRepublic(theonlypublisherthatdidnotcooperatefrom

thoseonesthatIcontactedwasAlbatros).Thesepublishersare:ArgoandNakladatelství

Hostpublishingmainlyliteraryworks;andGrada–publishingmainlyspecialized

publications.

Audiovisualtranslationsarethemaintopicofthefollowingsubchapter.Thesurveyin

thissubchaptercomparedfinalcreditsofprogrammesonthreetelevisionchannelswith

thelargestnumberofspectatorsintheCzechRepublic–Českátelevize,NovaandPrima

–andtwocablechannels–documentarychannelViasatandmoviechannelHBO.

Contributionsofdubbingagenciesonthistopicareincludedinthischapteraswell.

14 Internetisatopicofanothersubchapter.Thepracticalresearchinthissubchapter

investigateswebpagesofseveralbookshopsandcomparesthem:thisthesisintendsto

findouthowmanyofthesewebsitespublishthenamesoftranslatorsinparagraphs

providinginformationabouttranslatedbooksandhowmanyofthemdonotpublishthis

information.

AsubchaptercalledPublicAwarenessoftheNamesoftheTranslatorsisbasedona

partofaquestionnaireconductedbyJanaLuňákováandpublishedinherDiplomaThesis

“TranslationandTranslatorsViewedbythePublic[rukopis]:(basedonaspecialopinion

survey).”.Sheformulatednumerousquestionsinvestigatingthepublic’sattitudetoward

translatedworks,translatorsandtheprofessionoftranslating.Herresearchisbasedon

onehundredofrespondents(variousagegroups,levelsofeducationandlevelsof

languagecapability).

2.2 Types of Translations

Thefirstpartofthissectionstatesthebasicrulesinthefieldofpublishingthenamesof

translatorsintranslatedworks.Thesecondpartshowstherealityandalsopointsoutthe

factthattranslatorsdonotalwaystranslateonlyliterarytextssuchasnovelsandpoems.

Infact,mosttranslatorstranslatetextsinsomespecializedfield.Becauseofthis,itisvery

importanttodifferentiatethetypeofatranslatedtextwhenwespeakabouttherightsof

thetranslatorstohavetheirnamespublishedwiththeirworks.PeterNewmarkconnects

therightfortranslators’namestobepublishedwiththequestionoftranslators’

responsibilityfortheirwork:“Inthetranslationoflaws,treatiesandofficialdocuments,

translatorshavetoremainanonymous,sincetheycannotbeartheresponsibilityfortheir

15 finalversions;inothercases,theyshouldbeidentified,astheyhavethatresponsibility”

(Newmark,“SomeAfterthoughts”,ParagraphsonTranslation 175).

Standardpracticeofpublishingthetranslators’namesdiffersaccordingtothekindof

translationinquestion.Literarytranslationisthefieldwiththemostfixedrules.The

authorshipinthesphereofspecializedtranslationsisattractingmuchlessattentionand

thatiswhyitissoimportanttofocustheattentiontotranslatorswhoseworkisnot

recognizedandoftenoverlooked.ThesubchapterLiteraryTranslationsisthusabrief

summaryofthelawsandrules.Theothersubchaptersarebasedmainlyonthepractical

fieldresearchbecauseofalackoftheoreticalbaseandtheneedtomaptheactual

situation.

2.2.1 Literary Translations

Atranslationofliteraryworksisthemosttransparentfieldconcerningtheproblemof

publishingthenamesofthetranslatorsalongwiththeirwork.Mostofthesourcesand

articlesmentionedinthefirstpartofthisthesisdealtwiththeareaoftranslatingliterary

texts.BoththeCopyrightsubchapterandtheBibliographies,Citationssubchapterare

basicallybuiltontherules,lawsandrightsrelevanttotranslationsthataredeterminedfor

publication.

Duetothisreasonthereisnoneedtoconductanydeepresearchinthisareaby

collectingalargesetofbooksandfindingsimilaritiesanddifferencesinthismanner.

Rather,IdecidedtocontactthreeCzechpublishersandaskedthemabouttherulesthey

obeyinthesphereofpublishingthenamesoftranslatorsintranslatedbooks.Hereare

theiranswers:

translatedbooksintheironlineshops.Noneofthepublisherswritesthenamesof

translatorsonapagewithalistofbooksforsale.Argoprovidesinformationaboutthe

authorofabook,itsprice,dateofpublishing,numberofpagesandashortannotation.

Gradagivesmorespacetothedescriptionofcontent.SodoesHost,butitleavesoutall

otherinformation–exceptthenameoftheauthor.Onpageswithfurtherinformation

aboutparticulartranslatedbooks,thecontentisdescribedinmoredetailandsomefurther

informationconcerninganeditionareprovidedinallcases.PublishersArgoand

NakladatelstvíHostmentiontherealsoanameofatranslator.Gradadoesnotdothis.

17 Nomatterhowwethinkthiswayofgivingthecreditfortheprofessionalworkis

sufficient,literarytranslatorsenjoycertainlyoneofthebestpositionsamongthe

translatorswithvariousspecializations.PeterNewmark’sattitudetowardsthisisclear

fromanarticlehewrote:“Bookjackets,solavishwiththepraiseandbiographiesof

authors,shouldalwaysincludeatleastanoteabouttheirtranslators.”(Newmark,“Blurbs

forTranslators”,ParagraphsonTranslation 23).Hepointsatafactthatwhilstauthorsofa

bookgetallthecrediteveninthetranslationoftheirbook,translatorscanbegratefulfora

merenoteoftheirname.

Followingthedevelopmentofthepublishingoftheirnamesinthetwentiethcentury,

translatorscanbehappyforthissituation.Basedonthelongtimeexperiencein

translating,PeterNewmarksaysthattheirsituationhasimprovedquitealot:“fortyyears

agothenameofthetranslatorofabookwasoftenomitted”.Thenhecontinueswiththe

statementthatitisnotacommonplaceeithertoday:“evennowsayGarzanti(ofall

publishers)putsitintinylettersonthebackofthetitlepage(myprotest,aboutmyown

bookhasreceivednoreply)”(Newmark,“Revisers”,ParagraphsonTranslation 15).

MorenaNannetti,afreelancetranslatorfromEnglish,FrenchandGermanintoItalian,

conductedasmallresearchonthewebsitewww.proz.com.Shepostedthefollowing

questiononaforumofthiswebsiteandcollectedanswersandcontributionsfromseveral

translatorsfromallovertheworld:“Isitmandatoryforapublishertowritethenameof

thetranslatorinabookoranewspaperarticle?”Shelookedattheaccumulateddataand

foundoutthat:“...inFrance,Germany,Greece,Italy,Latvia,theNetherlands,Portugal,

TurkeyandtheUKthenameofthetranslatorisalwaysprintedinthetranslatedbook.If

IntheCzechRepublic,theareaofliterarytranslationsisverywelldealtwithandthe

onlycontroversialpartofitisthepublishingofthenamesoftranslatorsonthewebpages

ofpublishersandthepossibilityofplacingthetranslators’namesondustcoversof

publications(beingaquestionofan“extentoftheappreciation”oftranslators’work).

2.2.2 Magazine Articles

Anew,quickerrhythmofpeople’slivesdoesnotallowthemtospendmuchtimereading

longnovelsandlotsofbusypeopleprefertoreadshortertextssuchasmagazinearticles.

Thefutureofreadinginfreetimemaythuslieinhandsofmagazinesandpeoplewillbe

probablymoreinfluencedbythemthanbybooks.Thisincreasingstatusofmagazines

raisesalsoapositionofauthorsoftextspublishedinthem.Thesystemandthestyleof

publishingofnamesoftheauthorsofarticlesinmagazinesvaryfrompublisherto

publisher.Somemagazinespublishthenameoftheauthorofeverysinglearticle.Other

publishershavedifferent.Forexample,aweeklypaperTheEconomisthasa

longtimetraditionthatisunique.Theydonotpublishthenamesofauthorsatall.Abasis

ofthisphilosophyliesinasystemofauthorscooperatingoneacharticle.Therefore,it

wouldbehardtosaywhotheactualauthoris.

Similarquestion(whoisanauthorofanoriginal/atranslation?)shouldoccuralso

whentherearesometranslatedarticles.Isthereanycompulsoryruletoobeyinthis

situation?Accordingtomyresearch,thereisnosuchrule.IlookedatseveralCzech

magazinesofdifferenttypesandcomparedtheirstylesinthisarea.Someofthesewere

19 lifestylemagazines(Elle,Cosmopolitan),tabloidnewspapers(Aha!,Blesk,Spy),science

andnaturemagazines(Koktejl,NationalGeographicČesko,100+1Zajímavostizcelého

světa),afilmmagazine(Premiere)andanewsandeconomicweeklymagazine(Respekt).

Ifoundoutmoreinformationaboutthetwoofthem100+1Zajímavostizceléhosvěta

andRespekt.Theformercaughtmyattentionduetothefactthatitisnomorepublishing

translations(inthecommunistera,itwasoneofaveryfewmagazinesthatpublished

translationsofforeignarticles)andthelatterstartedtopublishtranslationsjustayearago,

butitswayofpublishingthenamesoftranslatorshasgonethroughaninteresting

development.

ThemagazinesElleandCosmopolitandoneitherputthenamesoftranslatorsinan

imprintnordotheypublishtheminarticles.Ellepublishesanameofanauthorofan

originaltext.Cosmopolitandoesnoteitheradmitthataninterviewwithaforeigncelebrity

actuallyisatranslation.

Tocontinuewith,CzechtabloidsmostlydealwiththeCzechcelebrities’sceneso

thereisnotsuchabigneedoftranslations.Buttherearesomefieldswherethereis.

Sectionsofworldfamouscelebritiesandtheirlivesandstylesareoftenborrowedfrom

foreignpaparazziandtabloids.Thejournalistslookupandreadseveralarticlesinthe

foreignpressandthen(inspiredbythem)writetheirownarticles(magazineAha!,Blesk,

Spy).Inothercases,theydonotadmitpublishingthetranslations.Thecaseofthe

interviewwithforeigncelebrityomittingthenameofthetranslator(asappearedin

Cosmopolitan)occursevenintabloids(Spy,Aha!)–andthiscanhardlybejustinspired.

Koktejldoesnotpublishthenamesofthetranslatorseitherintheimprintorinthe

articlesbutitatleastprovidesitsreaderswithinformationaboutthesourceofthe

translatedtext.IntheissuefromNovember2003,forexample,onpages120121,there

arearticlesborrowedfromtheNewScientist.

100+1Zajímavostizceléhosvětaisamagazinethathasaninterestinghistoryof

publishingtranslatedarticles.Thismagazinehasbeenpublishedsince1964.Itwasa

collectionofinterestingarticlesfromvariousforeignmagazinesthatweretranslatedand

publishedinCzechoslovakia.Themagazine100+1Zahraničnízajímavost(asitwascalled

tilltheendofayear2006)neverforgottomentionthesourcesofitsarticlesandit

admittedpublishingthetranslationsevenduringthe70sand80s.Itspolicy,however,

changedsubstantiallyin2005.Therehasneverbeenpublishedanytranslationsincethe

issue14/2005(Krystýnková20).Therehasbeennochangeinthestyleofpublishingthe

namesofCzecharticles:therehasalwaysbeenanimprintthatprovideditsreaderswith

informationabouteditors,publishersandsoon,butnolistoftranslatorshaseverbeen

publishedthereandneithertheactualarticleshavementionedtheirtranslators(orauthors

–since2005,whenjustoriginalarticlesstartedtobepublishedthere).

ThePremieremagazinedoesnotputnamesoftranslatorsinanimprintorinanarticle.

Itjustadmitsthatitwasactuallywrittenbyaforeignauthorandpublisheshisorhername

andasourcemagazine.

RespektisaCzechmagazinethathasanexclusivecontractwiththemagazineThe

Economist.IthasbeenpublishingitsarticlessinceApril2007.Asmentionedabove,The

Economisthasaninterestingstyleof(non)publishingthenamesofwriters.Themagazine

Respektistheninasituationwhereithastodecidewhatattitudeitwilladopt.MartinM.

Šimečka,theeditorinchiefoftheRespekt,wroteinamailaddressedtomethattheydo

21 notpublishthenamesoftranslatorsbecausemagazinearticlesarenotliterarytexts(“In

suchcase,itcouldhavehadsomesignificance,”hesaid).Inanycase,thearticlesare

translatedbytheBabyloniaagencyandtherearemoreauthorswhosometimescooperate

intranslatingasinglearticle.

Theshorthistoryofpublishingthenamesoftranslatorsinthismagazineismore

complicated.Ilookedatallissuesthathavebeenpublishedsinceanissue14/2007.This

issueintroducedaneweraofthemagazine.Atitle:“Respektisgettingthicker”wasona

coverofthisissue.Newsectionsstartedtobepublishedthen(aliterarysection,essaysby

foreignauthorsandarticlesfromTheEconomistmagazine).Allofthesesectionsare

connectedwithtranslations.Theliterarysectioncontainsreviewsoftranslatedworks,

essaysbyforeignauthorsneedtranslatingandsodoarticlesfromTheEconomist.The

styleofpublishingthenamesoftranslatorshaschangedduringthepastyear(thatishow

longthismagazinepublishestheforeignauthors’works).Ithasneverpublishedthe

namesoftranslatorsoftheessays.Inthereviews,thenamesoftranslatorswhocarriedout

thetranslationshavealwaysbeenpublishedthere(thisinformationisincludedalsointhe

subchapteraboutreviews).ThearticlesfromTheEconomisthavealwaysbeenmarked

withthenameofthismagazine,butthenamesoftranslatorshaveneverbeenpublished

alongwithit.Thechangewasintroducedinanissue30/2007.Thenamesofthe

translatorsofarticlesfromTheEconomistappearedinanimprint.Sincethisissue,the

imprinthasalwayscontainedtheirnames.Namesofthetranslatorsoftheessays,

however,remainunmentioned.

Specializedtranslationsgainmoreandmorepublicattentionandawarenessastheneedof

itrises.Everyonecanseethatglobalisationisaprocessthatcannotbestoppedandit

affectsallspheresofpeople’slives.Consequently,thereisasignificantneedoftranslators

specializedinvariousfields(advertising,businesscommunication,butalsorecipes,

instructionmanualsandothers).

AccordingtoUNESCO,translatorshavetherightfortheirnametobepublished“it

shouldappearinaprominentplaceonallpublishedcopiesofthetranslation”;translation

isdescribedas:

transpositionofaliteraryorscientificwork,includingtechnicalwork,

fromonelanguageintoanotherlanguage,whetherornottheinitialwork,

orthetranslation,isintendedforpublicationinbook,magazine,

periodical,orotherform,orforperformanceinthetheatre,inafilm,on

radioortelevision,orinanyothermedia.(“Recommendationonthe

LegalProtectionofTranslatorsandTranslationsandthePracticalMeans

toimprovetheStatusofTranslators”)

Iconductedasurveyinvariouskindsofspecializedtranslations.ThequestionIwantedto

answerbythisresearchwaswhetherappreciationoftranslatorsinaformofpublishing

theirnamesactuallyappearsinmanuals,advertisements,businessmaterialsandsoon.

ThefirstfieldIlookedatisthesphereofinstructionmanualsincludedinpackagesof

variousappliances.Innoneofthemwasthereanameoftheauthororatranslator

published(acompletelistofthemcanbefoundinanappendix).

Thenextareaofspecializedtranslationisadvertising.Theadvertisementsareeither

translationsororiginalproducts.Asthetimegoesbyandourmarketismoreandmore

24 filledwithforeignbrandsandcompanies,aneedoftranslationsinmarketingand

advertisingincreaseseverymoment.However,appreciationofauthorsofthemisvery

low.Theirnamesarenevermentionedinanysinglekindofadvertisement.

Businesscorrespondence,whichisvitalfortheperformanceofanyenterprise,is

sometimesinalanguagethatpeopleinchargedonotunderstand.Atranslationisthen

evenmuchmoreimportant,butthereisevidentlynoimportanceascribedtothenamesof

theauthorsofthiscorrespondence.Consequently,thereisnoneedtopublishthenameof

translatorseither.

The“WorldCongressonSpecializedTranslation2008:LanguagesandIntercultural

DialogueinaGlobalizingWorld”thatwillbeheldinDecember2008inHavana,Cuba

hopesthatitwill:“Emphasizethefundamentalroleplayedbythespecializedtranslatorin

thecreationofaculturallydiverseworld,inwhichindividualscanexpressthemselves

freelyintheirownlanguagestocommunicatewithoneanotherandobtaininformation”

(“WorldCongressonSpecializedTranslation2008”).Itcouldhelpthespecialized

translatorstogetacknowledgmentfortheirworkindifferentwaysthanbypublishing

theirnames,butthisisnotatopicofthisthesis.

Theonlywaythespecializedtranslationcanbeprovidedwiththenameofthe

translatoristopublishit.Isearchedinvariouskindsofspecializations(recipes,manuals,

guidebookstheirlistcanbefoundintheappendix).Theirimprintsalwayscontained

informationaboutauthorsoftranslationsastheyrankamongpublicationsandtherules

aregivenbythelawhere.

Theareaoftranslatingresearchpapersisanotherissue.MembersofWorld

AssociationofMedicalEditorspostedaquestionconcerningapositionoftranslatorsin

researchpapersinaforum.Scientists,aswellastranslatorsgotinvolvedinthediscussion

andsharedtheirexperience(“PositionofTranslatorsintheEditorialProcess”).Thislittle

25 researchshowsthatnamesoftranslatorsareusuallypublishedinAcknowledgements

(unlesstheywereinvolvedinwritingofanoriginalversion).Manyscientistsexpressed

theirthankstotranslatorsbysuggestingthattheirnamesshouldbeamongauthors’names.

Mostofthetranslatorsaresatisfiedwithpublishingtheirnamesinacknowledgements.

Theyalsomentionapossiblereasonforomittingtranslators’names–“embarrassmentof

havingtoadmittotheworldthattheyneededatranslator”(KarenShashok,“Positionof

TranslatorsintheEditorialProcess”).

Specializedtranslationisatermthatcoversmanyfieldsofvariousimportances.None

ofuswouldsearchforanameofatranslatorinamanual,but,asithasbeenshown,even

scientiststhinkthattranslatorsoftheirresearchpapersshouldbegiventhecreditfortheir

workandtheirnameshouldappearthere.Thepracticeisnotunited,becausethereareno

clearrules(apartfromthefieldofpublishedworks).

2.2.4 Audio-visual Translations

Sincethetimesofthesilentmovies,therehasbeenagreatdevelopmentachievedinfilm

industry.Itstartedattheturnof19 th and20 th centurieswithaperiodofmotionpictures

withoutvoice.Thedevelopmentcontinuedthroughvoicelesssceneswithintertitlesthat

accompaniedthem.Voicesandsoundsinthemovieswerethenextstepinthisevolution.

Thisisalsothepointwhereaproblemofunderstandingthemovieindifferentcountries

began.Tillthatmoment,movieswereperfectlyanduniversallyunderstandableacrossthe

wholeworld.Thisstartedaneedtoproducefilmsinthecountries’ownlanguagesorto

translatethewordsandtransferthemsomehowtoforeignspectators.Therearetwoways

ofdealingwiththistask.Thefirstoneistoprovidethemovieinanoriginalversionwith

26 subtitlesinanotherlanguage.Thesecondpossibilityistolendtheactorssomeoneelse’s

voicesspeakinginanotherlanguage.

Thissurveytriestofindoutwhetherthereisanameofatranslatorwhocarriedouta

translationwaspublishedinfinalcredits.Itlooksatoriginalversionsofsubtitlesand

dubbingstheonesthatwereordered,carriedoutprofessionallyandlaterpaidfor

properly(intheidealcase).Iwilldealwithillegaltranslationsofsubtitleslaterina

subchaptercalledInternet(PirateTranslations).Thebasisofthesurveywascreatedby

creditsofprogramsontelevisionchannelsNova,Prima,Českátelevizeandtwocable

channels–documentarychannelViasatandmoviechannelHBO.Alistofprograms

containedmovies,seriesanddocuments(thecompletelistofthemcanbefoundinthe

appendix)andIwantedtotracethedifferencesnotonlyamongthesechannelsbutalso

amongthesekindsofprograms.

Theprimaryaimofthissubchapteristocomparethechannels.NovaandPrimaseem

tohaveverysimilarstyleofpublishingthenamesoftranslatorsinthecredits.Nova

mentionedthetranslatorin35outof39programsandPrimain21outof24programs.

Českátelevizepublishedthenamesoftranslatorsonlyin17outof35programs.Other

programsannouncedagroupofpeoplecooperatingonpreparingtheparticularprogramor

anameofadubbingagency,butitwasneverclearwhodidthetranslation.Finalcredits

onHBOcontainedtranslators’namesin22outof31casesandonlyintwocases2outof

20onVIASAT.Thecomparisonofcablechannelswithtraditionaltelevisionchannelsdid

notprovetoberelevant.VIASATshowedthelowestnumberoffinalcreditswithnames

oftranslators,butthiscanbecausedbythefact,thatitbroadcastsonlydocuments

(programmeswiththelowestnumberof“hits”generally).

Thereisanumberofwaysoffindingoutinformationaboutliterarynews.Somepeople

regularlyvisitbookshopsorgotolibrariestocheckthenewestliteraryworks.Plentyof

magazinesprovidetheirreaderswithapage(ormore)ofreviewsofthemostrecent

books,movies,theatreplaysorcomputergames.Thissubchapterdealswithreviewsin

themagazinesbecauseitisnowadaysprobablythewayofmentioningtranslatorsthat

addressesthelargestaudience.

Thewidenessofanofferofreviewsdependsonatypeofmagazinesornewspaperswe

lookat.Itsscopeandfocus(kindofnewworksitrefersto)thenalsodependsonthefocus

ofthemagazineitself.Inliterarymagazines,weusuallydonotfindreviewsofcomputer

thesetermsischanging.Collectiveauthorshipismoreandmorecommon,theboundaries

betweenprivatetextsandtextsmeanttobepublishedaregettingundefined(various

weblogsthataresomethingbetweenprivatediariesandliteraryworks)andveryoften

therearearticlesandtextsthatdonotevenadmitbeingtranslations(Rambousek6).

Maintopicsoffollowingsubchaptersareconcreteexamplesofthisinteresting

phenomenon.OneofthemspeaksaboutWikipedia,itsphilosophyandawayofsolvinga

questionofauthorshipandcreatingnewarticles.Thenextonedealswitharticlesonthe

internet.Itfindsoutwhethertheyareortheyarenottranslationsandiftheyadmitthis

fact.Thethirdsubchapterwritesabouttheproblemofpiratetranslations.Itisincludedin

thechapterInternetbecauseithasbeenrecentlyspreadingsofastmainlythankstothe

internet.Thefourthsubchapterdescribesanewpossibilityofbuyingbooks.Thispaper

focusesonanamountandqualityofinformationwecangetonlineaboutabook(a

presenceorabsenceofanameofatranslatorofthisbook).

ArticlesonWikipediaareeitheroriginalsortranslationsoforiginalarticles.Their

authorsarenotsignedanywhereandmakingcontributionsisbasedonvoluntary

effortofitsregisteredusers,readersandcontributors.Theyhavegivenupalltheir

rightsconnectingauthorshipasitisseenandperceivedmoreascollective

authorship.Therewasneitheranykindoflistwherethearticleswouldhavebeen

dividedaccordingtotheirorigin(beingoriginalsortranslations).

ThissituationchangedonApril13,2008whenanewprojectwasfounded.Its

mainaimsaretoguaranteebettertranslations,toprovidelistsofarticles

recommendedfortranslating,tomarktranslatedarticlesandtoawardthebestones

(“Wikipedie:WikiProjektPřeklad”).Thenamesoftranslators,however,stillstay

unmentioned.Wikipediaisaveryinterestingprojectwhereauthors(regardless

whethertheyareauthorsoforiginaloroftranslatedarticles)voluntarilypublish

theirworkswithoutanyclaimstohavetheirnamepublishedalongwiththem.

Wikipediaisthusaverytypicalexampleofinternetspaceshowingallitssigns

accordingtoRambousek’sessay(mentionedinthepreviouschapter).Thenamesof

35 translatorsarenotpublishedthere.Contrarytosomeotherfieldsoftranslation,inthiscase

translatorsarevoluntarilygivinguptheirrighttohavethenamespublished.

2.4.2 Articles

Thereareplentyofvariousarticlesfillinglifestylesectionsofvariouswebsitesthatare

translations,butdonotevenadmitbeingtranslations.Theirstyleandform,however,

revealsthetruthabouttheirorigin.Authorsoftheseprobablyquicktranslationsdonot

evenchangeawordorderandthetextisnotveryidiomaticanddoesnotsoundnatural.

Sometimes,itevenresemblesamachinetranslation.

Theauthorsandtranslatorsofthesearticlesarenotusuallysignedthere.Towhat

extentitinfluencesaqualityofthetranslationisnotaneasyquestion.Itisobviousthough

thatthetranslatorfeelslessresponsibleforhisworkwhennobodyknowsthatitactuallyis

hiswork–despitethefactthatthisisaninterestingquestion,Iwillnotdealwithitasit

wouldneedmuchdeeperanalysis.

AsurveyconductedinthispapercoversthethreemostfavouriteCzechwebportals

publishingarticlesonvarioustopics:Atlas.cz,Magazin.czandNovinky.cz.Theaimof

thispaperistofindoutwhethertheseportalsadmittheirarticlesbeingtranslationsand

whethertheypublishnamesoftranslators.

ThewebsiteAtlas.czpublishesalwayspublishesanameofanauthorbelowanarticle.

Sometimesitisveryhardtotellthearticlesapartaccordingtothefactwhethertheyare

originalarticlesortranslationsthatwerenotadmitted,butwhenthereisaninterviewwith

aforeigncelebrity,wecanbesurethatitisatranslation.Inthiscase,Atlas.czusesthe

signature:“TheEditors”(e.g.“AshtonKutcher:SvouDemimilujinadevše!”).

Novinky.czhasanotherstyleofprovidingitsreaderswithsourcesoftheirarticles.At

thebeginningofanarticle,thereisacityofitsorigin(forexample:Berlininanarticle

“Lidédávajípřednostdrbůmpředpravdou”).Insteadofanauthorand/oratranslator,

thereiswritten:“Famous,Novinky”.TheFamousisanewsagencysupplyingtheNovinky

portalwiththenewsfromtheworldofcelebritiesandlifestyletopics.Itisusualthatthese

portalsdonotadmitthattheypublishtranslations.Signaturesvaryaccordingtothestyle

thattheparticularwebportaluses.

2.4.3 Pirate Translations

Alltheaforementionedfeaturesoftheinternetofferidealspaceforillegaltranslations

thetranslationsthatdonotrespectcopyrightandthatareconductedvoluntarilywithout

beingorderedandpaidfor.Itisveryhardtofindculpritsandiftheydonotwantto

imposetheeconomicrightsandpublishtheirtranslations,itisveryhardtofindeventhe

actualcrime.Therearevarioustypesofpiratetranslations(asthiskindofa“crime”is

called).Wecanfindheretranslationsofthewholenovelsanddramas,websitesorparts

ofthewebsitesandpiratesubtitlestoalltypesofmovies,seriesanddocuments.

ThecaseofthepiratetranslationofanovelHarryPotterandtheHalfBloodPrinceis

veryfamous.TheauthorsofitwerefansofHarryPotterseries(accordingtotheirclaims,

thereweremoretranslatorswhocooperated)anddidnotputtheirnamesundertheirwork.

37 TheofficialCzechpublisherAlbatrosexpresseditsopinionofficiallyandpublishediton

itswebsites(www.albatros.cz).They,aswellastheauthorJ.K.Rowling,didnotfeelany

lossesanddamagescausedbythispiratetranslationinthiscase,becauseithadno

commercialuseandcouldnothavebeendownloadedfromwebsitesofitsauthors.Itis

importanttosaythatthistranslationwasquitegoodandevenanofficialtranslatorPavel

MedekrecognizedthisfactinaTVinterviewwithJanKrauscalledUvolnětese,prosím

broadcastedonSeptember,142007onČT1.Ontheotherhand,AlbatrosandPavel

Medekhimselfdidnotforgettopointoutthatdespitethefactthattheirinterestshadnot

beenharmed;thistranslationbrokethecopyrightlaw.

Thelargestportionofpiratetranslationsbelongstopiratetranslationsofsubtitlesdue

tothefactthatpiratedownloadingofseriesandmoviesfromtheinternetbecamea

commonwayofgettingnewmovieswithoutthenecessityofpayingfororiginalDVDsor

cinematickets.Therearemanyinternetportalsthatofferdownloadingofsubtitles.

Usually,thereisanoteaboutauthorsofthesetranslations.Thiscanbesomekindofa

symbolorasignature.Itisscarcelyanactualnameoftheauthor;itismoreoftenina

formofsomekindofanickname.IdownloadedtensubtitlesfromaportalTitulky.com

(“Českéaslovenskétitulky”)andthetruenameofatranslatorwasnotpublishedinanyof

them.Anemailaddresswaspublishedincreditsalongwiththenicknameoftheauthorin

sevenoutofthetensubtitles.AcompletelistofmoviesandseriesIdownloadedthe

subtitlesforisintheappendix.Thesenicknamesareusuallyknowninacertaincircleof

people.Thiscansatisfypossibletranslators’needofappreciationitgivesthema

possibilitytoidentifytheirworkandtobeidentified.Aninterestingfeaturethatcannotbe

foundinoriginalsubtitlesisthatthreeofthemincludedalsoanapologyforpossible

mistakesinatranslationorCzechspelling.Foursubtitlesalsomentionedthenicknameof

aproofreader.

38 IalsopostedaquestiononaforumontheportalTitulky.cz.Thequestionwaswhat

motivates“piratetranslators”intheirworkandwhatkindofsignaturetheyuse.

Translatorsusuallyrepliedthattheystartedtotranslatesubtitlesbecausetheydidnotwant

towaitforanofficialtranslationonDVDorontelevision.Theirmotivationismainlythe

public’sreactionandfeedback.Thisisalsothemainreasonforsigningtheirtranslations

bynicknamesregisteredonTitulky.cz.Everyonecanlookuptheregistereduserand

contacthim/heronhis/heremailaddress.Someoftherespondentshavealreadytriedalso

professionaltranslatingofsubtitles.Theypreferthepiratetranslatingthough:“Thereisa

closerelationshipbetweentranslatorsandhisaudience...Youcanchoosewhatyouwant

totranslate...workinghoursandthedeadlineareuptoyou...”(Blackcloud,“Fórum–

Autorství”).

Thesphereofpiratetranslationsgrewquicklywithanincreasingnumberofinternet

users.Theattitudetowardstheauthorshiphasbeenloosenedbutithasnotdisappeared

yet.Theneedof“signing”theworkisstillveryapparentinthefrequentuseofnicknames.

2.4.4 On-line Bookshops

Shoppingontheinternetbecomesmoreandmorefrequentwayofdoingshopping.Books,

movieswithdubbingorsubtitlesandotherpublishedworksarealsoonaninexhaustible

listofthingswecanbuyhere.Thissubchapterexamineswebsitesofthemostoften

visitedinternetbookshopsandfindsoutwhethertheyprovidetheircustomersalsowith

informationaboutauthorsoftranslations.

Itcanbesaidthat,ingeneral,theirattitudesaredifferent.Someofthemdonotwrite

namesoftranslatorsanywhereontheirwebsites(sevenoutoftenpublishers).Afewof

39 them(twooutoftenpublishers)publishitatleastinadetailofabookthatwechooseto

findoutmoreabout.Therewasonlyonepublisherwhoprovideditscustomerswiththe

nameofthetranslatoralreadyinitsofferofbooksandalsointhedetailofeverysingle

book.

40 2.5 Public’s Awareness of the Names of the Translators

Writer’spopularityismeasuredbythenumberofsoldissuesofhispublicationsand

public’sawarenessoftheseworks.Translator’spopularitycannotbemeasuredbya

numberofsoldissues–thisfeaturemeasuresthepopularityoftheauthorofanoriginal,

notthetranslator’sone.Theremainingmethodofmeasuringthetranslators’popularityis

totakeintoconsiderationthepublic’sawareness.JanaLuňákováconductedaresearch

(whichwasacoreofherdiplomathesis)thataimedatfindingoutthepublicawarenessof

theauthorofthetranslationwhenreadingatranslatedbook.

Thisresearchshowedconsiderableindifferenceofreaderstowardsthenameofthe

translatorofthebooktheyreaddespitethefactthattheyappreciatetheirwork.Itstates

thatonly7%ofrespondentsalwayslookupthenameofthetranslator.Thisinformation

almostneverinfluencestheirchoiceofthebookstheyread.Tocontinuewith,mostofthe

peopleadmittedthattheywereencouragedtofindanameofatranslatorinacasethey

readaverygoodorontheotherhandaverybadtranslation.Theirbeliefintranslators’

abilitytoinfluencetheworkisconsiderable:“About79%oftherespondentsbelievethat

atranslatoriscapableofspoilingthebookbythetranslation”(Luňáková29).Luňáková

stateslateron:“Fewerpeople(46%)believe,ontheotherhand,thatthetranslatorcan

improveabadbook.”

Accordingtothisresearch,thetranslatorscanmakethemselvesmorevisibleby

variousways.Theirtranslationhastobenoticeablygoodorbad.Anotherwayistoprinta

nameofatranslatorvisiblyonabookjacket.Luňákovágivesanexampleofabook

Robinson andanameofJ.V.Plevaonacoverand The Raven withanameofVítězslav

Nezval.Manypeopleknewthesenamesandadmittedthatitwasbecausetheywere

printedonthecoversofthesebooks.ApoliticalcareerofJaroslavaMoserovábrought

41 attentiontoherprofessionasatranslator.TheworldwidepopularityofaHarryPotter

seriesbyJ.K.RowlingaffectedalsothecareersandthefactthatthenamesPaveland

VladimírMedeks,thetranslatorsofit,areamongthegeneralknowledgeofthemostof

thecontemporaryreadership.

42 Conclusion

Inconclusion,Iwanttosummarizetheconductedresearchandtopresentapictureofthe

translator’sstatus.Asopposedtoliterarytranslations,othertypesoftranslationsdonot

havethatclearlystatedrulesaboutpublishingthenamesoftranslators.Noneofthe

magazinespublishingtranslatedarticlesprovidetheirreaderswiththenamesoftranslators

inthetext;beitatthebeginningorattheendofarticles.Theinformationabout

translatorsinanimprintdiffersinvariousmagazines.

Specializedtranslationisclearlydividedintoworksintendedtobepublished

(publishedbookswithspecializedtopics)thesealwaysmentionauthorsoftranslations

andpublicationssuchasmanuals,businesstranslationsandtranslationsofadvertisements

thatarenotsignedbytheirauthors(neitherauthorsoforiginals,nortranslators).

Theaudiovisualtranslationsappearstobelongamongthemostcomplicatedand

unheededareasoftranslating.Therearenoclearrulesanditismoreorlessvoluntaryfor

thepublisherstomentionanameofatranslatorinfinalcredits.

Thereviewsofthetranslatedbooksvaryintheamountofinformationaccordingtothe

typeofthemagazinetheyarein.Literarymagazinesalwaysstatethenamesoftranslators.

Thetranslator’snameisnever,oratleastneverinthecasesanalyzedinthethesis,

publishedinthereviewsinlifestylemagazines.Thereisonlyonemagazinethatpublishes

itintheareaofnews,economicandcultureweeklymagazines.RonaldChristdescribes

thepractice:“manynewspapers,suchas The Los Angeles Times ,donotevenlistthe

translatorsinheadnotestoreviews,reviewersoftenfailtomentionthatabookisa

translation(whilequotingfromthetextasthoughitwerewritteninEnglish),and

publishersalmostuniformlyexcludetranslatorsfrombookcoversandadvertisements”

(quotedinVenuti8).

43 Theinternetisveryspecificinpublishingofthenamesoftranslators.Itsattitude

towardsthisproblemseemstobemoreliberal.Mostofthekindsoftranslationsinthe

environmentoftheinternet(articles,emails,Wikipedia,piratetranslationsofbooksor

subtitles...)tendtoloosethefeatureoftheauthorship.Infact,theboundarybetweenthe

translationandtheoriginaltextisblurredandtranslationistakenasacollectivetaskand

itsauthorshiploosesitssignificanceaslongasitisnotconnectedwiththepublication.

Theinformationaboutthetranslatoroftranslatedworksisnotcompulsoryinonline

bookshopsorotherinternetshopsofferingforexampleDVDswithmovieswithsubtitles.

Mostreadersprobablyagreethatallpublishedliteraryworksshouldbeprovidedwith

namesofallauthors(bothauthorsoforiginalandtranslatedworks).Ontheotherhand,we

allthinkthatanameofanauthororatranslatorispurposelessinthecaseoflegal

documents.Butwhereexactlyliestheboundarybetweenthesetwotypesoftranslations?

Whereshouldthetranslatorgetthecreditforworkwelldoneandwherehe/sheshould

not?Arepublishedmanualsforknittingsodifferentfrominstructionsenclosedin

packagesofnewDVDplayers?Thislineisobviouslyveryunclearandthissurvey

confirmsit.Yet,italsoprovesthatthesituationintheCzechRepublic–asfaras

publishedworksareconcernedisquitepositive.Ontheotherhand,thethesisalsopoints

outthefactthatforexampletheareaofaudiovisualtranslationsneedsitsepochof

enlightenment.

PeterNewmarksumsuptheextentofthetranslator’sinvisibilityinhisParagraphs

onTranslation :

Inprinciple,thetranslatorshouldbeinvisible,andatranslationshould

notreadlikeatranslation,butshouldreadasanindependenttextabout

tostartitsownlife.Infact,thingsarenotsosimple.Tobeginwith,

translationsshouldbepublishedassuch,withtranslator’snameand

44 detailsofthesourcelanguagetext.(Newmark,“TheInvisibilityofthe

Translator”78)

Thewaytogetthetranslator’sprofessionahigherstatusisalongandrockyone.A

helpfulstartmaybearesponsibleapproachoftranslatorsthemselvestotheirwork,good

workingeneralandaprideofbeingaprofessionalinthisfield.MorenaNannetti

highlightsanimportanceofthetranslators’behaviorforthenextdevelopmentofthe

public’sawarenessoftheiroccupationandrespectforit:

[I]tseemsthatitisnotentirelypossibletopreventthe“blacksheep”

publisherstoignoretheexistingruleanditisoftenuptothetranslator

himselftorefusetoworkwithpeoplenotwillingtogranthimoneofhis

basicrights.Unfortunately,foronetranslatorwhorejectsacommission

underthosecircumstances(asitwasmycase)thereisalwaysanother

readytoacceptit,withoutaskinghimselfhowmuchdamagehecausesto

thewholecategory,thatmeansinthelongtermalsotohimself.

Thepublic’sknowledgeofthenamesoftranslations’authorsshouldbebetter–thereisno

disputeatthispoint.Luňákováoffersseveralwaystogetitbetterintheconclusionofher

study.Thenameofthetranslatorsshouldbepresentnotonlyinlittlelettersonacopyright

pagewhereithasnoimportanceatallbecausemostofthereadersjustskipit,butit

shouldenjoyaprideofplaceoncoversofthepublications.Teachersatschoolshould

pointapupils’attentiontotranslatorsofthebookstheyarelearningabout.Andthe

journalistswritingreviewsoftranslatedbooksshouldatleastmentionnamesof

translators–andinbettercasetocriticizeastyleandamodeofthetranslationaswell.

Withoutalltheseprerequisites,thereisnohopethatenoughappreciationwilleverbe

grantedtothisprofession.IthinkthatPaulAusterdescribedimpressivelytheimportance

45 ofthisprofessionandthewayitfulfilskindofamissionintheworldofcommunication:

“Translatorsaretheshadowheroesofliterature,theoftenforgotteninstrumentsthatmake

itpossiblefordifferentculturestotalktooneanother,whohaveenabledustounderstand
