Lesson 1 Group 2
“Cotton Tail” Composed by Duke Ellington. This version is from Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington.
“Lester Leaps In” Composed by Lester Young. This version is from Charlie Parker, Charlie Parker: Jazz at the Philharmonic 1949.
Warm Up: Arpeggiate the triads of the chord progression to “Rhythm Changes” (worksheet). Play the dominant9 chord tones (1-3-5-7-9) using the Jazz Poem (worksheet). Play sections 1, 2, and 3 of the Root Progression in sequence (worksheet).
Lesson: Learn “Cotton Tail” and “Lester Leaps In”. Improvise by paraphrasing the melody, using triads on the A sections and dominant9 chords on the bridge (B section), and improvise by using riffs that are discussed in class.
Theory Concept: Discuss melodic and harmonic intervals (unison/prime, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th/octave). Introduce dotted eight notes and dotted eight note rests and the 5/4 time signature. Sight read more complex and syncopated rhythms (worksheet). Discuss the #IVo7 substitution (I-I7-IV-#IVo7…). The #IVo7 chord is a substitution for the IV chord. Discuss the “Turnaround” iii7-vi7/ ii7-V7/ I.
Ear Training: Sing the roots and triads on the A sections and dominant7 on the bridge. Students will be tested on the chord progression to “Rhythm Changes” played out of sequence.
Goal: Memorize “Cotton Tail” and “Lester Leaps In”. Improvise freely by paraphrasing the melody/riffs and playing the harmony (playing on the chords). Cottontail Duke Ellington
