SCIEM2000 projects of interest to Nestor readers include research concerning datum lines by first appearances of specific ceramic types throughout the eastern Mediterranean, Theran ashes, Cyprus, Minoan deposits, the end of Mycenean culture, and the stratigraphy of Aigina (EH III-LH I), as well as scientific methodologies including dendrochronology, C14 dating for the absolute chronology of Eastern Mediterranean cultures in the 2nd millennium BC, data management, electronic communication, and the application of quantitative methods. SCIEM2000 is a special research program (SFB) of the Austrian Academy at the Austrian Science Fund and is under the patronage of the UNESCO.

Calls for Papers On 15-19 April 2002 the Third International Congress on the Archaeology of the Ancient Near East (3 ICAANE) will be held in Paris, at the invitation of the Université de Paris 1-Pantheon Sorbonne, the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (UMR 7041), and the École Pratique des Hautes Études (IVe section). The scope of 3 ICAANE includes all fields and areas of the Ancient Near East, from the Eastern Mediterranean to Iran and from Anatolia to Arabia, from prehistoric times to Alexander the Great. On 3-6 April 2003 the Cyprus American Archaeological Research Institute (CAARI), on the 25th anniversary of its foundation, together with the Archaeological Research Unit (ARU) of the Department of History and Archaeology of the University of Cyprus will host an international conference on Egypt and Cyprus in Antiquity in Nicosia. This workshop is part of the research project ‘Topography of Power’ whose aim is to combine archaeological data and a variety of scientific techniques, including GIS and petrology, in order to reconstruct the socio- political landscape of Minoan Crete; further information is available at http://www.fltr.ucl.ac.be/FLTR/ARKE/Arka/accueil/fsr.html). Excavators of ‘palaces’ or major courtyard buildings will discuss the functional aspects of these central buildings, their place in the social and political landscape of Neopalatial Crete, and their relationships with the surrounding hinterland. Obituaries The editors of Nestor are saddened to report the death of William D.E. Coulson., Professor of Classics at the University of Minnesota and director of the American School of Classical Studies in Athens for a decade. Professor Coulson contributed to the understanding of the Dark Ages in eastern Crete, having co- directed the excavations at Kavousi Kastro with Professors Geraldine C. Gesell and Leslie Preston Day and having participated in the synergaseia excavations at Halasmenos near Monistiraki with Dr. Metaxia Tsipopoulou.
