My name is Anne Amis, and I recently joined the Intensive English Program at Kingwood College as a fulltime faculty member. I am originally from Dallas, TX, but have lived off and on in Houston for the past 12 years. I consider Houston to be home. Before coming to Kingwood, I worked and lived in many diff erent environments. One of my fi rst work experiences was helping immigrants in the U.S. apply for political asylum and other immigration benefi ts, like residency and citizenship. I found this work to be very meaningful. I also worked for several years with a youth leadership program called “Amigos de las Americas.” AMIGOS sends young students to do community service work in various Latin American countries in the summers. I loved working with AMIGOS, and in fact, AMIGOS was the place that I fi rst started learning Spanish and traveling! As a high school and college student, I participated in AMIGOS for four summers; I went to Belize, Ecuador, the Dominican Republic and Mexico. Most recently, I returned from living in Arica, Chile, which is a desert city in the very northern part of Chile. My husband Jaime is from Arica and we met there many years ago, when I was living and working there. As you can see, I love to travel and meet people from other countries! Kingwood, then, is a perfect place for me.

Camping At Vung Tau Y Th uy Dinh, Vietnam , Reading & Vocabulary IV What do people like to do to spend their free time? Th ey like to play sports, travel, hang out with friends...for me, I like to go camping with my friends. It was my fi rst year at college when I had a group of fi ve close friends. We all had the same hobby: we all loved to go camping. We especially liked some places near the sea where we could see the sun set and rise. I remember, sometimes when my friends called me and asked me to go camping with them, I said yes without thinking. Here came the diffi cult part, I had to ask for my parent’s permission. Th ey usually let me go, but sometimes it was hard for me to ask them because I had to stay out for one or two nights. My friends and I normally went to the beach which was not too far from my house. It took us about two and a half hours to get there. However, we always got there really late with just enough time to pitch a tent and cook something for dinner. After we all settled, we sat and ate together, talked about funny stories or shared our problems, so we could help each other. Th en we strolled down the beach to get some fresh air. On the fi rst day, we barely slept. We stayed up really late to play games and waited to see the sun rise. We took a short nap and got ready for another day. We ate breakfast and went climbing to see some historical remains, or some pretty scenes...we never got tired of that mountain, full of mystery. Although we went there several times, we still thought that there was still something that we had not seen yet. When we went back to the tent late in the afternoon, we got everything packed up to go home. Sometimes we stayed for another night. I really love to go camping with my friends and traveling with my family. Now that I stay in the United States, I can no longer go camping with my friends. I miss those days so much. I hope that one day, when I go back to Vietnam, my friends and I will have a chance to go camping again. •••
