In line with the changing education landscape in Malaysia and its progression SPOTLIGHT since being awarded the University status in 2010, Taylor's University launched Unveiling of Taylor's University 5-Year its new Strategic Plan for 2012- 2016. The plan was created to be an effective guideline for the university to move towards achieving its mission of becoming Strategic Plan 'Top Employers Top Choice University' by 2016. The development of the plan, Malaysia Technology Expo 2012 which consists of six strategic thrusts, was a collaborative effort among the academicians and senior management of the University. The launch was held at the Centre of Design and Architecture (CoDA) Gallery, Nestlé Culinary Challenge and officiated by Emeritus Professor Tan Sri Dato' Dr. Syed Jalaludin, Knowing Kampung China Through Arts of Taylor's University, and Professor Dato' Dr. Hassan Said, Vice-Chancellor and Ideation Award 2012 President of Taylor's University.

In moving forward, a global approach will be adopted and applied by Taylor's University to construct and shape its undergraduate and postgraduate programmes as well as the research and innovation initiatives to the University will strive to provide opportunities for staff and students to benefit from contact with international ideas, viewpoints and access to the latest knowledge and understandings.

Taylor's University impressed the judges with the quality of its research SPOTLIGHT innovations in the areas of engineering, design and computing at the Malaysia Unveiling of Taylor's University 5-Year Technology Expo (MTE) 2012, which took place at Putra World Trade Centre from the 16th to 18th of February. Both lecturers and students from the School of Strategic Plan Computing and IT (SOCIT), School of Engineering (SOE) and School of Malaysia Technology Expo 2012 Architecture, Building and Design (SABD) walked away with 2 silver and 8 bronze medals in their respective categories, for their research projects that were ACHIEVEMENTS & RECOGNITION exhibited at the expo. There were a total of 14 exhibits by Taylor's University at the MTE this year.. Amongst some of the winning innovations from the School of Computing and IT were the two prototypes called 'FThat Mobile Application' & 'SynKall: Integrated & Synchronised Cloud Based File Service.' FThat is an Android-based mobile application that allows users to locate their Facebook friends and keep up with Facebook events around them. It also allows users to send and receive messages for free, and gives them directions via Waypoint, when one is lost. Synkall is an integrated and synchronized cloud based file service. Using this, users can upload/download, as well as view files on multiple devices. Major file formats can also be run on their native applications with Synkall. The lecturer in charge of the two projects, Ms. Aidora Abdullah, commented that she was glad her students' hard work finally paid off. "From the beginning to the end, we encountered obstacles whilst working on the projects, but through perseverance and a never-give-up attitude, we managed to persevere," said Ms Aidora with a smile.

The School of Architecture, Building and Design did their school proud by winning a bronze medal for their prototype entitled 'Innovative "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" Furniture, which is essentially a multi-usage furniture piece. Cik Nor Hayati Ramli, a lecturer with the school, was very excited to have won this prestigious award as this was her first time entering such a competition. She commented that this project, which was created by both the students and lecturers from the school, was an innovative idea as it impacts the community. The furniture can be attached with a lock-and-chain, and it can be distributed to homeless people for them to at least own a compact "Bed with Multi-Storage".. It can be converted into a comfortable bed with a retractable reading light and a side table. The product can also be enhanced with a solar panel charger to cater for any electrical needs.

The 'Mind Controlled Wheelchair' prototype by Taylor's University School of Engineering allows a physically- challenged individual to lead a normal lifestyle with the freedom of movement. Dean of the School, Dr Mushtak Al-Atabi, commented that the team felt great that the prototype won an award in the expo, especially since the work was a collaboration among first year students. "This shows the great human potential that is being unleashed at the School of Engineering through the use of 'Project Based Learning' approach. This is why we chose to invent a product that can have a great impact on the quality of life of a physically-challenged individual" added Dr Mushtak.

The Malaysia Technology Expo (MTE) is the biggest technological exhibition in the region which showcases the latest and greatest in technology-based products and services which revolutionise the aspects of commerce, trade, information and communication. Taylor's University student Chen Kim Leung cooked up a storm to win the Nestlé SPOTLIGHT Professional Culinary Arts Award 2012, defending the title for Taylor's University Unveiling of Taylor's University 5-Year which was won by his predecessor, Foo Ee Lynn, in 2011. "I owe my success to Chef Farouk Othman for his trust in me when he chose me to participate in the competition. I remembered how nervous I was on the first day of the competition and he was the one who gave me the confidence to do well in the following days," said the 20 year-old Kim Leung, who aspires to own a restaurant one day.

Kim Leung's trainer, Chef Farouk also defended the "Winning Coach" title, which he won last year.

Dean for Taylor's University School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts, Mr. Neethiahnanthan Ari Ragavan, commented that Kim Leung and Chef Farouk's win signifies a great start for the school in 2012.

"Defending the titles we have won last year shows how well-trained our students are and how much talents we have groomed so far. This is indeed a sweet victory to us as we celebrate a glorious 25th anniversary for the school."

As the champion, Kim Leung walked away with RM2, 000 cash prize, a challenge trophy and a certificate endorsed by the Malaysia Association of Hotels (MAH) and Chefs Association of Malaysia (CAM).

Established in 2006, the Nestlé Professional Culinary Arts Award is presented by Nestlé Professional, with the MAH and CAM as organisers, with the objective of elevating the standards of culinary arts in Malaysia. It is regarded as the only prominent award in Malaysia to recognise young talents in culinary arts. This year's competition is also recognised by the Department of Skills Development (Jabatan Pembangunan Kemahiran, JPK) established under the Ministry of Human Resources, for the purpose of promoting and coordinating skills training strategy and programmes in keeping with Malaysia's development needs.

Only top students from each colleges or universities were picked to compete in the competition and they had to go through a grueling three-day competition -- serving up finger food, appetizers, entrée, main course and desserts presented in a buffet style on the second day, and a black box challenge containing a secret ingredient to be used in the creation of the dishes on the third day of competition.

Headed by Chef Antoine, judges of the competition included Chef Christian Heidenreich from Renaissance Kuala Lumpur, Chef Johari from SMTC Highway Mart Sdn. Bhd., Chef Sabri Hassan from Master Chef, Mohd Nazrin @ Ludwig Gaisbauer from German Delicatessen Sdn. Bhd., and Chef Ricky Chan from Nestlé.

Other colleges which participated in the competition were Management and Science University Shah Alam, University College, UiTM Dungun, UiTM Penang, KBU International College, KDU University College Damansara, KDU University College Penang, Pusat Teknologi dan Pengurusan Lanjutan, Food Institute of Malaysia, Legend International College of Hospitality & Tourism, Berjaya University College of Hospitality, Kuala Lumpur Metropolitan University, Politeknik Seberang Perai and University of Management and Technology (UMTECH).

The visit to Taylor's University Lakeside Campus was in line with a workshop on TCHT Alumni Soiree "Developing A Career Center" organised by the Career Center of Ball State Samuel Wee University; and Counseling, Career and Disability Section, University of Malaya at the University of Malaya. The visit was aimed at training these universities TAYLORIAN TALENTS personnel to become effective practitioners in planning, developing, and managing their own career counseling center; and at the same time share and Dr. Nurjahan Mohd Ibrahim impart basic knowledge and principles of counseling, especially in career counseling sub-specialisation. Nestlé Culinary Challenge 1. Please describe briefly to us your career journey after graduation. Knowing Kampung China Through Arts I began my career with HSBC Malaysia as a Management Trainee. During the 3 Ideation Award 2012 years tenure, I worked in numerous departments, specializing in change management, people development and strategy. What were some of your most important career and personal accomplishments? TAYLORIAN TALENTS The acceptance rate for HSBC Malaysia's Management Trainee program was at 0.5% in 2008, and among the 40 management trainees taken every year, I was Dr. Nurjahan Mohd Ibrahim one of the youngest to be promoted as a manager. I was given various projects to run and worked closely with C-level executives across various business lines. We set extremely challenging growth targets for each team, and make it our life's mission to make sure we succeed in it.

5. What is your definition of success? I believe everyone has his or her own unique potential. Success is really reaching that full potential, and it could be anything from starting the next Facebook to writing a one hit wonder!

6. What would be the biggest misconception which people have about you? There have been a couple of occasions where people would ask why they have never seen me get angry or upset. Honestly, I do get angry and upset, but I think I've learnt to respond rather than to react during difficult situations.

7. What was your childhood ambition? Did you achieve it? Never had a childhood ambition so I guess the closest thing to an ambition was when I was 15, I wanted to become a pro-gamer in Counter-Strike! Things changed of course.

8. What are your passions in life? What motivates you to want to pursue these passions to excellence? I am passionate about living a passionate life! There is always a choice to do things half- heartedly or with all that we have. From my experience, life is truly lived when we give it our best shot – and I'm passionate about giving the life I've been blessed with my all.

9. What does the future hold for you – any exciting plans, developments? I am certain that for the next 2-3 years, I will be spending all my energy in building the young and passionate team at SAYS.com to really scale the business globally.

2. Share with us about a time when you had to overcome major obstacles, be it personal or career related. What were the key learnings?

From February to May 2009, I was invited as a Visiting Professor and Research Fellow in Medical Education at the International Research Center for Medical Education (IRCME), University of Tokyo, Japan. At that time I could not speak any Japanese nor did I like raw fish as a meal! However, I accepted the invitation and took on the challenge. I lived in a foreign country away from my family and learnt to adapt to a new culture.

My tenure in Japan turned out to be an amazing experience both socially and professionally. I was impressed with the Japanese way of life. I had the opportunity to observe and participate in teaching and assessment of the undergraduate medical programme, delivered teaching sessions to residents and interns at the University of Tokyo and lectured on current trends in medical education and family medicine in some notable institutions and primary health care facilities in Japan. What I learnt was that nothing is impossible if you put your mind to it. Now I love sushi!

3. Why did you decide to enter into the education field? Why did you join Taylor's?

After serving as a clinician for over 10 years, I had joined as a pioneer faculty member at a newly established clinical school of the International Medical University (IMU). Since then I had the opportunity to work with and learn from leading national and international medical educationists. These notable teachers, my colleagues and students inspired me and with my own passion to teach made me enter and remain in academia. In May 2011, I joined the Taylor's University School of Medicine to continue what I love doing – teaching.

4. What are your passions in life? What motivates you to want to pursue these passions to excellence?

My passion in life is to serve the community I live in. Since the time I stopped being a full time clinician, I now channel my passion into training compassionate and competent future doctors to serve the nation. 5. What does the future hold for you – any exciting plans, developments?

To be part of the team planning the development of a new Clinical School for the Taylor's University School of Medicine (SOM) is both a challenging and exciting one.

6. What is the one thing people should know about what you do, but don't?

That I don't give up easily! A favourite quote by Maya Angelou -- "I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel."

Invited guest ADUN Bandar Kuala Terengganu, YB Dato' Toh Chin Yaw, said the exhibition reveals the nostalgia of this quaint yet vibrant Chinese village. "It brings to light the memories, the yearning for the past, and the attachment of the local community to the place and the showcase of its diverse and rich architectural palette within the backdrop of our contemporary urban developments," he said.

"This collaborative effort between the community, the lecturers and the students acts as a good platform for learning and dissemination of knowledge to the locals, researchers, policy makers and the general public," YB Dato' Toh added, encouraging more of such collaborations to capture the nostalgias of places in Malaysia.

Dean of SABD, Mr. Tony Liew commented that he was amazed with the entire project. "I am truly proud of our students and academics achievement as I understand that it involved a lot of hard work in documenting and communicating their research findings to the stakeholders and the public. What they have done at Kampung China eventually turned out to be a vital source of information in helping to rebuild the Ho Ann Kiong Temple, which was burnt down in the year 2010."

"I would also like to thank the residents of Kampung China, for giving Taylor's University an opportunity to contribute towards preserving the cultural heritages of this historical village."

Once known as one of the thriving trading posts in the Malay Archipelago, Kampung China in Kuala Terengganu is a significant heritage in Malaysia's history. It is one of the oldest Chinese settlements in the country and has been the backdrop for countless important events which took place in the town of Kuala Terengganu even before the official beginning of the Terengganu Sultanate.

Capturing living proof of the Chinese settlement and its rich cultures, Kampung China was listed as one of the Most Endangered Sites in the World by the World Monument Watch in the year 1998.

In December 2009, MASSA together with the SABD students and academics conducted a joint research project and fieldwork at Kampung China. The students from SABD were required to conduct research on the Kampung China's history, as well as measure and document in detail shop houses in the area and the renowned 200-year-old, Ho Ann Kiong Chinese Temple. The temple was burnt down in the year 2010 and the students' sketches were used to rebuild the temple later.

The research project was also presented with an Honourable Mention Award by Badan Warisan Malaysia at this year's Mubin Sheppard Memorial Prize ceremony.

TDS has a successful outing at the competition with three of its students making it into the top ten. Besides Eu Wayne, Soh Bing Cher's 'Duet Chair' and Catherine Fong's 'Rock "N" Roll' designs were also shortlisted in the top ten.

The Ideation Award was established three years ago and is held annually in conjunction with the Malaysian International Furniture Fair (MIFF) to discover young talent for the future of the Malaysian furniture industry. The competition is co- organised by MIFF and Arcradius Consulting Sdn Bhd. This year saw international experts being part of the judges' panel for the first time as they vet the entries right from the start and picked the 10 finalists whose designs were transformed into prototypes for the final round of judging and display at MIFF, held at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) recently.

Through such a significant collaboration, students undertaking the Diploma in PREVIOUS ISSUES Business programme would be entitled to a blanket exemption of six subjects Issue #03 from the Professional Diploma in Corporate Administration (PDCA). They are Issue #02 only required to complete another two subjects under PDCA i.e. Law and Practice of Meetings and; Corporate Compliance and Practice. Students under Issue #01 this scheme will obtain a PDCA which will enable them to sit for the International Qualifying Scheme (IQS) to qualify for membership with the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (ICSA) after practical training and working experience.

MAICSA has also granted four degree programmes offered by Taylor's Business School for exemptions from the PDCA and the Professional Part 1 programme of the ICSA for related undergraduate degrees - Bachelor of Applied Finance , Bachelor of Arts (Accounting and Finance), Bachelor of Commerce and the Bachelor of Business (Hons) Business Administration.

Dr. Cheah Foo Seong, President of MAICSA, enthused, "We believe, with this special collaboration with our PDCA which is a feeder route to ICSA, this will provide an opportunity for more undergraduates to understand better and realise the importance of the profession of Chartered Secretaries in the field of corporate administration and corporate governance which are the driving force for sound compliance and integrity for corporate Malaysia."

The employability of a Chartered Secretary in the job market is very high with ICSA holders in Malaysia being 100% employed. MAICSA strong strategic alliance with employers such as Khazanah Nasional, Sime Darby, Felda and many other corporations listed with Bursa Malaysia as well as small medium enterprises which have constantly highlighted the difficulty of hiring qualified candidates, also contribute to the employability of graduates. Thus, MAICSA is constantly marketing the Chartered Secretary qualification to improve awareness among students on the demand for Chartered Secretaries and the versatility of the ICSA qualification.

Tan Sri James Foong's speech captured the attention of the audience.

The dining experience is a yearly affair for the students to cultivate a sense of respect for the law and practice ethics in the profession when they graduate. Apart from excelling in studies, students are expected to shine in eloquence and mannerisms.

"We have made this dining session mandatory for students as it provides a good opportunity for them to meet and mingle with the industry professionals. This will also instill a sense of pride in students of being part of the law profession," said Harmahinder Singh, Dean of Taylor's Law School.

The night ended well with the final grace and address by Ms. Rachel Ng, legal associate with Skrine & Co. She gave an overview to students on what are required of a law graduate by the legal fraternity and how to stand out and be noticed among the other law graduates.

"Employers are looking for graduates with confidence, who are able to mingle with people and dare to question the legal fraternity, the willingness to learn and the inquisitiveness to know more about the legal profession. She further added that students should intern in as many firms as possible because such an experience is vital and would be a good headstart for a career in law.

"It was certainly a night to remember, being given the chance to dine with renowned legal professionals who are willing to spend time with us and share on what to expect from the legal profession," said Wong Jing Ting, Year 2 law student of Taylor's Law School.
